2014 Olympics Mens Free Skate

Chan tried to stay positive but apologized to Canada and was remorseful at the interview and seemed to try hard for composure on the podium. He is disappointed enough already without a Mama like you kicking him at this moment. What exactly have you done for him to expect so much from him like he owes you? This is a question I've wanted to ask all the Jeremy bashers since his Team skate. Olympic skating is the most unpredictable event full of drama so it should not be just another opportunity to pick on one's favourite target.

Listen, I've been a huge Patrick fan since his first Jr Worlds where I watched him live, so save the personal 'fire back' at me. Go read through my old posts before you accuse me of trashing him because he's "my favorite target". My "dream podium" in that thread was Chan golden. My point is that the coaching change was foolish in an Olympic year & I believe it cost him the gold. His jumps are not consistent and his 3ax has a technical issue on the take off that isn't being corrected because he doesn't have a coach who can fix it. She's far less qualified to coach him than I am.

Don't judge people by their nickname or their location, sweetheart. I'm a born and raised former Canadian competitive skater.

Well, don't they make even FUNNIER faces when they fall? Learn some respect please!! And if you're one of those who put up videos of "ugly faces" and scrawled comments about "ugly skaters" , I really have a piece of mind for you.

This is a difficult sport, NO ONE is going to look their best doing of of the most gravity-defying acts on earth!!

I don't put up videos of skaters on Youtube, thank you. I have better things to do with my time. And I know it's difficult. And that no one will look their best. I appreciate the skills these skaters have.

Well, that was a dog's breakfast!

I agree with Joannie 100%. He didn't win the silver, he lost the gold. My FB friends who are former comp skaters are very displeased with Patrick Chan who, apparently just said to the media, "well, it wasn't my worst skate ever, so that's a positive." Armchair athletes are all saying how wonderful it is because, well, it's a medal for CAN and we got none yesterday. I'm happy he still got on the podium for Canada but that skate was not good. Again, why on earth would an Olympic gold contender hire an Athur Murray Dance Instructor as his primary coach in an Olympic year? So he could date her daughter? He needed a solid technical coach behind him to fix that 3ax and the jump inconsistencies.

I agree I like Patrick and felt he could have won gold and even with what he did could have had more points but I hated what he said but that is fine what I think affected him was no real coach. And this woman often looked lost.

Um, no one's claiming anyone would look good doing a jump mid-air. That's kind of the point.

Of all the things to act morally superior about. Who bloody cares if someone finds a picture with a funny face funny? :rolleye:

So what is the point to say how ugly skaters look when they're jumping, hmm??

The whole thing started when these posters commented how a skater had a big open mouth when jumping, and I said it's rude!

Maybe we have 5 year olds posting here.

FERNANDEZ YOU FOOL! He would have had the bronze medal, had he done a 2axel instead of a second 3salchow at the end. AAAAAARGH this is so frustrating! Did they not go over scenarios like this where he triples a quad? :bang:

I can't believe Ten is third. I mean good for him to have skated so decently but I'd have probably had him 5th overall because of how empty his program was and some smaller mistakes that the judges didn't deduct him for.

Machida was really undermarked on the PCS. The way he used his whole upper body throughout his program and all the choreographic detail he had plus everything being delivered with good flow - he didn't get enough credit for it.

Hanyu's choreography was subpar and the lack of busy upper body movement only made his issues with posture and lines more apparent. PCS-wise, Chan should have destroyed him. What was absolutely remarkable about Chan's program was the unusual layout and constant transitions. He didn't need to skate all the way around the ice rink into a big element and whilst doing so, he would constantly perform some footwork and turn changing direction because he builds speed so easily, he doesn't need to just do cross-overs.

In the FS at least, I would have probably placed them:
1. Chan
2. Hanyu
3. Machida
4. Ten
5. Fernandez (only a little behind Ten and ahead of him overall)

This is why you don't make hasty, emotional decisions without considering both pros and cons. They should have never increased the values of quads as much as they did.

Downgrades don't cause Zayaks. And the commentator was wrong.

Sometimes they are coaches, sometimes they are choreographers, sometimes they are team leaders.

Nina Petrenko was with Brezina. She's Viktor's wife and a choreographer (but she didn't do Brezina's programs).

Rotating a 4salchow is something very few skaters are capable of. Landing a 3salchow is something you will see many skaters doing.

There were plenty of reasons. :p

Takahashi obviously deserves very high PCS. The problem was Ten was overmarked.

Jason Brown's program was far far more complex than Ten's.

I still think D10 did a lot ... possibly the second best performance of the evening. He's one of those skaters who make difficult elements look easy, so a Lori Nichols program would look effortless despite being difficult in nature. He deserved his bronze.

Fernandez - his cute "fool" SP really jinxed him into making a foolish decision. I think it was just the fact that he wasn't thinking and his body reacted in a reflex. Split second decisions during live competition at the Olympics, give the guy a break...

So instead of inflation, now we have Hanyuflation added into the mix.

The problem is how ridiculously generous judges are in giving out +3 GOE to the "favorites"...and then tying the PCS scores to the tech scores, and then constrain the PCS scoring into a corridor. It creates situations where skaters can get a 30 points cushion where they can fall multiple times and still win. This Olympics shows clearly that the problem isn't Chan, it is the system.

Neither Hanyu nor Chan should have gotten scores that are 10+ points above everyone else in the short. Unless their jumps are something totally extraordinary like Han Yan's 3A, they should not be getting so many +3 GOEs. You have to fly into the jumps with zero preparation and get huge height/distance, land as smoothly as Oda, and hold the edge to get +3 GOE.

Hanyu should not be getting such high scores for his SS and TR and Chan shouldn't not be getting such high scores for his IN and PE.

So what is the point to say how ugly skaters look when they're jumping, hmm??

Enough of this, please! Fans have had enough disappointment these past few days. Enough of the toilet humor. This like laughing at a person's disability, "accent" if you're a native speaker, etc.

Yeah there were specific technical issues that Chan had that he DID NOT ADDRESS. They cost him. The Axel has ALWAYS been his bugaboo and he tends to get tight during the big events. This performance was not surprising if you've watched him skate the past four years. The difference is that he didn't win this time, because someone skated better than him and the judges placed them in the right spots.

Good lord, he was still wiping the sweat off of himself, what is he supposed to say?? He's obviously devastated and put waaaaay too much pressure on himself. He probably couldn't even think straight really. Not saying that what he said sounded appropriate, but it was right after his marks where I'm surprised he held up so well with the cameras on him. It's like Jeremy and his huge fall, you interview him right after his skate and you get a weird interview because he's in shock. I think Patrick is in shock, he KNOWS he could have had it, easily, but he just fell apart and probably feels pretty damn sh#*#* about it.

yeah, i feel bad for him. and it was a rude *** thing for joannie to say especially because they were teammates and are presumedly good friends. patrick is hardly the first athlete to choke at the olympics and he won't be the last. he's feeling bad about it already, he doesn't really need his friends mouthing off on twitter about what a terrible skater he is

hehe interesting last skater

I am going to watch Boitano's free program in Calgary!!!! After this uninspiring free skate I really need Brian!!!!

I was just scrolling down the page and only read 'I really need Brian'... I thought of Brian Joubert and his see through shirt :D

I have to note that hnayu has landed his quadruple salchov with a good rate in practice... but it seems that in competition ha not be able to land it if not in finlandia

I'm so happy with this beautiful podium!!!! But it really breaks my heart to see Chan in second, when he's on, he's the best...but there were too many mistakes. I was moved the most by Denis' performance, so I'm SO glad he got the bronze!!!! he looks a lot like Yagudin when he skates:)
Yuzuru was good, but it was surely a disappointing performance for him...:((( There were no clean performances, but I guess it's also because the technical content nowadays is sooo demanding, it's so difficult to see clean programs with quads and all.
CONGRATS TO THE WINNERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!
also, so sorry for Fernandez:(((

Thanks for a really great positive post!!!
