Jason Brown and Adam Rippon, Two Amazing Skaters

And skaters change. If what attracted a person to the skater was what they could do, rather than who they were, then it is easy to envision someone changing their mind about liking them.

Another thing that is different from most skaters is that even when he falls or makes a mistake, he never gives up or loses the joy. You never find yourself looking at his face after a fall, seeing that crushed expression that most skaters have, and feeling sorry for him. If he makes a mistake he gets up with a smile on his face (Olys team long, for example), and that is a great approach. Although when the programme is serious like T&I he may have to try to rein those smiles in a bit

I believe this is actually one of Jason's greatest strengths. When people talk about the psychology of figure skating, they're often talking about the ability to stay in the moment in the program and not focus on what happened before or what's coming up next. There was an interview with Jason (can't remember which) where he talks about how Riverdance was so tough that he didn't have the mental space to think about anything other than what he was doing at that exact moment! Plus what you said, TMC - he can fall but not let it destroy his confidence and joy. That's a tremendous asset that will continue to serve him well, I think, especially once he gets the quad

Yes to what Hyena said. And I sure dont' get the comment about Jason's butt sticking out. When you see him up close he's actually rather small and lithe. I think he has good posture and don't get the remarks about his physical shape.

Hanyu on the other hand has horrible posture IMO. And being so skinny doesn't help. BUT - being skinny sure allows him to rotate quickly and tightly.

but now whenever I watch Jason, I couldn't help but looking at his rear!!! I blame you guys!

His posture is not good comparing to other top skater, but it's not that horrible. And in SP and the first half of LP, his posture doesn't look too bad. It's just when he is tired in the second half, the posture looks more visible.

I suspect Jason will go down the same road as the Canadian skater Shawn(sp?) Sawyer. Adam's time has probably passed him by as far as medals go; I had hoped Raphael would do the trick. I enjoy both skaters.

I don't know about Adam's time having passed him by... I think there was visible improvement last year - I was very impressed. Especially his attitude of really just going for it - even though he fell on the quad, for example, he'd not look dismayed, but get up and perform the rest of the program as if nothing happened. There was just another level of intensity about him last year. I was so sorry that Nationals did not go well for him. I hope he can build on the improvements of last year and come back stronger this year.

As far as the thread goes - as this is my first post here - Jason is one of my favourite skaters overall.

Blame me!

I don't mean that his butt is big in any way or anything like that. I mean.. he has a nice behind, i don't mind looking at it if i have to  although i prefer Patrick's... :big grin:
And i think why , for me as it seems.., the butt sticks out is because he's back is so curvy that it pushes the butt out. Oh dear what am i talking here..... :bang: But maybe his back is long or something and his ponytail doesn't help either..... Just look at P Chan's "butt and posture", there's nothing sticking out in any noticeable way and then look at Jason, and u'll see what i'm talking about.

And about Yuzuru. I agree. His posture is pretty good for me, it's when he's exhausted it gets worse.

Skating is not ballet, and for that matter, ballet is not only not skating, it is also not the only type of dancing in the world.

I love to see a variety of styles of movement in skating, not just stereotypical balletic movements. I would hate to see Jason skating to any of Riverdance, Prince, or MC Hammer, with ballet arms, because none of the styles of dance associated with those pieces of music look anything like ballet. Jason would have looked ridiculous in those programs if he had done ballet referential stylings.

Jason's best thing, after his obvious, contagious joy in what he is doing, is being able to hit all the beats in his music, even landing the jumps most of the time.

Adam is a nice, balletic style skater, and a very pleasant guy, but he does not grab my attention like Jason does, partially because the only unique thing he is doing is attempt a quad lutz.

No, skating isn't ballet and not everyone needs to be balletic or anything - nor Jason. What i meant with ballet training was just for him to notice more his fingers and arms. For the most part they are pretty, nice and appropriate for the type of music he's using, but just in some moments they look a bit heavy and ugly. :confused2: But this is a small issue and i'm sure as he grows more as an artist he'll be more perfect. :agree:

Speaking of ballet arms, I like Patrick Chan's arms and hands a lot and they certainly are not balletic. i know some don't like them, but i feel they are very fitting to him and his style of skating and artistry. He's flow from blade to fingers just seems more complete and are perfect for me. But i'm biased since i get goose pumps when he skates.

With the different style issue, i agree totally with dorispulaski.

I feel like this is a terrible subject because I feel like such a pervert... :o:

Anyway, while Jason does arch his back a bit, I think he has a naturally sort of sticky-out butt. If you look at podium pics and other pics where he's standing upright and not skating, or where his back is straight, it's quite noticeable. I think it possibly also depends on body type a little.

There was going to be a long post with pictures and comparisons of my boys' different body types and thus engine shapes but it's late and I'm having trouble finding suitable pictures and I'm tired so I'm going to bed. Sorry.

I totally get you. I'm not even a 'butt-staring' type, but I did notice that Jason has a tiny bit of what is called a 'swayed back'. Sort of the opposite slouch. But it doesn't detract from his performance IMO.

IIRC, even Kurt Browning mentioned in one of the CBC After Shows during the GPS that he thought Rippon was good-to-go for the Olympic team along with Abbott (whom he is a big fan of). I certainly don't think his time is over, but I do think he has his work cut out for him.

I agree about Adam looking very strong and gutsy last year. I don't like describing last season as a bad season for him - objectively speaking, he had a really good season, it's just that he had one disastrous competition that unfortunately had the highest stakes. (I don't count 4CCs, because really, who could have dealt with the psychological toll of Nationals and then skated great a week later?)

Yeah, based on early-season stats, I think a lot of folks would have had Adam's odds of making the team quite high based on how well he did during the GP.

The question now, is whether Adam can bounce back from what was a major setback in his progress and continue on the positive trajectory he had started last year.

All this skater butt talk is bringing up the strangest feelings of Deja Vu for me. My mother used to have the same issue and comments about Brian Boitano's butt. Every time he skater. . . she had to complain about how much she did not like his butt and how much is stuck out. His butt really did prevent her from being a Brian Botano fan. . . I am hoping the but leads Jason to Brian's success. . . hell Id even be happy to see Jason on a cooking show.

It seems it just happens with some guys that work that area. There was an article that came out just before Sochi where a former male pairs skater complained he had trouble finding pants that fit his butt. A non-skater example is an interview I saw with Brad Pitt talking about training for one of his roles and his butt kept getting bigger. He was trying to get his thighs to bulk up to match, but they just got thinner and the butt got bigger. . . and looked bigger on thinner thighs. . . some guy butts just do that.

As for Adam. . . . has he talked much about long term plan/hopes? I am actually hoping he manages to break into chirography more fully as it seems he enjoys it. It occurred to me that given that he choreographed Mirai's programs, and one of Ashley's this year. . . he could potentially end up being responsible for half the choreography that winds up on the national podium this year (if they both medal, which I do still think is a possibility, it is also possible neither will medal, the same applies to Polina and Gracie) which I would think would launch him into the category of legitimate choreographer, but potentially a highly desirable one. I wonder how often a new up and coming choreography has had even two skater's on the podium together.

I am watching River-dance again and...couldn't help but looking at his rear. I blame all of you. now that I recall, Max Aaron and Joshua Farris all have good behind. :bang:

Oh, don't tease us like that...please make the post (when you have the time and energy, of course). :)

I guess he could cut the ponytail; it really doesn't add a lot lol. But seriously I really like both of these skaters; I don't agree rippon is finished but Jason has the momentum. We'll have to see how they develop both technically and artisitically. Much is said about Jason's artistry but rippon is no slouch - he is even doing some choreo for other skaters which says a lot.

Why should Jason cut his ponytail? It's his trademark.
