Mao Asada plans comeback

I think as long as everything else is solid, she should still easily finish in second even with a under-rotated 3A. If the judges are nice (:rolleye:), she should still get 70+ for the SP/34+ PCS. And as far as I'm concerned her spins are the best out there as well. Of course, the summer is long and who knows what she and others can accomplish. I suspect Liza's 3A will be better than ever come next season...

I wonder if she will do something similar to the 2014-2015 season where she had easier tech content at the beginning of the year and increased the difficulty as the season progressed (adding the 3f-3lo etc. ). or something similar to 2012-2013 (pre-4cc) where she did the double axel triple toe in place of the triple axel until she was ready to do it in competition. Of course this is all IF she training goes well and she does decide her body can handle it. I'm excited to see what her decision is and I am anxiously awaiting the press conference with JSF to confirm whether she really will come back or not. I hope she does the grand prix, or senior B's though, because I don't think trying to do what Yuna did (besides competing at Korean Nats and Golden Spin) by not competing in any prior competitions before Sochi will work because Mao's technical content is a lot more difficult than Yuna's was. (assuming she keeps the majority of her layout and the triple axel)

I'm hearing conflicting reports on Mao's retirement, but if she does retire the ISU should consider it a complete waste that someone still likely capable and has name value isn't competing in some fashion. It's kind of sad that the ISU doesn't have a plan to keep skaters who have made names for themselves skating competitively till they are at least 30. Without such a plan the "star system" is broken a bit. I'd like to see a Masters Circuit(age 23+) done in the style of the Medal WInners Open(I love the lighting they did for that event).

This thread title gave me heart crazy palpitations. It's not definitive yet right?

Er, nothing indicates Mao is capable of pulling a Kwan/Kim type comeback. And while she may have proven to peak too soon in past seasons, I don't see Mao losing steam from competing after all these years.

I'm still on the fence about her coming back. On one hand, what a blessing. On the other, the judging might just send me over the edge. A clean Mao would literally deserves 11s for PCs to make any sense.

Poster Rosewood on FSU reported that Mao played a song on her latest radio show that features these words (Startin' by Ayumi Hamasaki, translation by Rosewood):

No one tells you the answer
If there is any answer,
you've got it already
If you've decided you'll go through with it at any cost,
it's time to keep your face up.

No meaning to compare yourself to someone else
Everyone has different measure...

You are one and only in this world…

:yay:, ok I think it is sure to say she is coming back

How is the ISU supposed to do that? You can't force someone to compete if they don't want to. Not to mention most singles skaters' bodies would be broken down by 30.

I would personally love to see celebrated skaters skate longer. And it would be great to have a lively pro circuit. But this isn't some snap-your-fingers-and-it's-done thing. In fact, due to the lack of a pro circuit (and the influence of several big-name skaters that stayed for multiple Olympics), now we're seeing people stay longer.

My gut says that one of the Russian super babies is going to win 2018 OGM (Liza, Lena, Zhenya, Sima, maybe Yulia if she gets her mojo back, or dare I say it Adel repeating), but I would absolutely LOVE it if Mao returns and wins in 2018!!

I think Adelina repeating is far less likely than Mao winning. Only two people in history have ever repeated as OGM.

I think it would be really cool to see what kind of programs Mao does should she decide to return. I actually love Yuna's skating more after her break and return, there was a maturity in it that was really beautiful. I saw similar shades of that grace in Mao's Sochi and worlds skates. I think Mao still has something beautiful to offer the sport.

But not impossible...I mean someone obviously summoned a powerful voodoo to curse/bless the ice in Sochi  Who knows, by 2018 they might have leveled up and we'll see an even bigger miracle/mess. :drama:

She should work with Jeff Buttle on choreography. I was going to suggest Stephane as Mishin announced Lambiel would be doing Liza's programs next year.

To follow up on her Rach 2, Mao could do a Rach 3 justice. Lena's was fun and spunky, but it didn't have the maturity that Mao could bring (or Karen Magnussen did in 1973, or Michelle Kwan did in her two Olympic SPs).

And an interesting thing is Mao said in the interview with Midori that she doesn´t like lyrics at competition programs, but I think she trust and does what her coach and choreographer think is better, so if her choreographer choose lyrics she probably will take into account.

This. People say that Yuna was better before her comeback, but her skating seemed more polished than before (although it was very polished before too).

Anyways, I hope Mao does come back! With one of the veterans returning, the competitions will be fun too. I am worried about that lutz though.

Speaking of the lutz, why did the ISU even think about lowering the base value for a flutz/lip? Isn't the GOE deduction enough? Now skaters like Mao and Zijun have to worry about it.

The ISU is very determined to punish anything that's not a fall.

More breaking news from rosewood: On 14th Mr Sato revealed that Mao lands 3As during training. "She's doing it(3A) too. Some are good and some are not. Still there are things to work on, even though some of them looked good seemingly," said Mr Sato. Preparations for her come back is going well.

Asada started training under Mr Sato at his home rink Shinyokohama Skating Center from this week.

You can't force someone to compete if they don't want to.

But sometimes skaters do want to compete... they just don't want to compete in a high stress schedule of competitions, may get bored with the current IJS rules, or don't want to lose their reputations by getting beat by much younger skaters. Often there may not be something to drive skaters to keep going if they've "been there, done that".

Nah. After Sochi, those Koreans are on the Sotnikova hate train like 3874% over Asada. Mao never "stole" any title over Yuna; if she did, it was always because Yuna flubbed up. If it was Adelina vs. Mao in Pyeongchang, I would bet the Koreans would choose Mao to win even with the whole Korea-Japan hostility in mind.
