2016 Junior Worlds Ladies Free Skate

What a disastrous championship for Russian Team. Not a single gold. Is this a preview for Seniors next week?

Hardly disastrous in the ladies. Two unforeseen withdrawals and the remaining skater still manages a top 2 finish. She managed to get the Russian fed three spots by herself. I'm so proud of Masha. An YOG silver medal and a world silver medal to close the season. Just shows the quality of Russia ladies. As for the other events, yeah I can't comment. But whatever their doing for their ladies is clearly working. They should apply this for there other disciplines.

Men was a splatfest, yes, but they did get ladies silver, silver and bronze in pairs and bronze in dance, plus three spots in everything (I think)...that's four medals, so it's not like they failed! (For comparison, Japan got two medals-ladies gold and bronze-and the US got three, dance gold and silver and men's bronze).

Congrats to Marin for her great performances and her win!

Sad about the withdrawals (Polina Tsurkaya is my girl, hope she heals soon), but this was still a well-deserved win for Marin.

Poor Bradie. At least Tyler Pierce had some redemption from last year.

Ladies FS, review

Ladies FS

If we look back to what happened today, then we also have to look into the future, as these kids are exactly this, our future in figure skating. It was amazing to see, how many different nations had so lovely skaters on ice, today.

Latvia for instance, with two super charming figures Diana and Angelina and latter looks like a million dollars, such a top model on ice!

If you see her with the violet headphones on, she is so red carpet for me and not less attractive on the ice. The 17 years old, has a very charming way of skating, very graceful, nice work with her hips, good knee bends and super fluent, I so love how she can look at you, super expression and yes, she was a bit disappointed as she missed her PB by about 15 points, but she shouldn´t be too sad, there are people skating for 20 years, who do not have her abilities in artistry and she has the jumps as well, five triples today plus two attempted, that were underrotated – so ya, there is really nothing to be sad about!

As for Diana Nikitina, I love her coach, Romans Pantelejevs! He is so handsome, that bold guy, he reminds me of a friend I went to school with, same facial expression, super guy really.
His skater, performed to the OST of "the Piano" and I really felt she caught the essence of the music lovely and what a fighter she is. Totally exhausted after her skate, where she went for the big stuff.
Her start was very good, with triple Lutz – triple Toe, an element that should be followed by another five triples, sadly not all fully rotated, so that she couldn´t reach her personal best as well.

I so like these two skaters, Angelina who does practice at Riga and Diana who has relocated from Riga to St. Petersburg, yet not forgetting about her hometown.

To forget, the Russian fans might want to, as two of their stars, Polina with the twisted ankle and Alisa with the injury during warm up today, couldn´t skate and bring back the gold.

The "third", Maria Sotskova could skate and after her very sexy short, she brought something for the heart today and as sad it may sound, she broke her´s in the process, I think.
She looked so sad during the VC and honestly, I do not know why! Yes, she did not win the gold medal and we all know about the pressure Russian athletes face, as there are so many top class skaters, but really – she can be proud of herself. She did skate lovely on both days and she is just 15 years old! These kids, have no reason to be sad, it is part of your life, that you "lose" and all that matters is how often you can pick yourself up and just try again.
Let´s face it, she scored 123.94 in the free, more than ever before and her combined total of 188.72 is a new PB as well. She can be proud of that, her jumps are gorgeous, all seven triples, perfectly executed including the opening combination of Lutz – Toe and later Flip – single Loop – Salchow. Personally, as a non technical specialist, I have to ask why she didn´t get the level four at her layback. It looked so fantastic and she is such a beautiful young lady, I love her outfits and the little snow Leopard has grown up so much, there is no need to cry, even if her eyes told us different and the medals were really small...

Small, are in general also the Japanese people, maybe the creator of the medals was a Japanese, ;) but on a more serious note, they do produce some of the finest skaters in the world. I really have to make a big bow for these kids, they skated so lovely today and the 4th Yuna Shiraiwa, had an absolutely gorgeous passage in her program, choreographed by Tom Dickson and he really created some magic there, from her layback to the loop.
Super expression at all times, the elements nailed on beat, great speed and fluent motion during the steps, I loved the knee falls and open arms, nice interpretation!
Before her super stepsequence, the 15 years executed two triple – triple combinations (Lutz – Toe / Sal – Loop) and only lost a single element today, her triple Lutz in combination with double Toe and double Loop. A tiny skater, with a big heart, well deserved 4th place with 171.59 points.

Wakaba Higuchi, skated to bronze and a new PB with the second best free skate achieving 125.65 points and a combined total of 183.75. Her "The Mask of Zorro" had lovely speed, a lot of grace and facial expression, but also difficulty and I love how she puts her jumps so softly on the ice, really showing confidence while making eye contact with those watching. The 15 years old, is a very calm and quiet skater, with good skating skills and a very present appearance in a well balanced program, that always progressed and offered something new to the eye.

Wakaba, performed seven triple jumps, including a Lutz – Toe combination, well spread over the course of her program. You had a few jumps, then some steps or a spin, again a few jumps and a spin, it just all worked so well together, a beautiful choreography by Noriko Sato and Nanami Abe. I don´t know about you guys, but this is figure skating for me. Just skate, let it look easy and tell your story – easier said, than done of course.

Marin Honda, while not achieving the same maturity as Higuchi or Maria, the Japanese convinced with her naughty and fresh appearance, not making a single mistake in the whole program, landing seven triples in the process. While she had a lower base value in TES (59.47 to 61.17 of Wakaba), she edged her out in PC´s and closed the gap with good GEO, resulting in the best FS today, with 126.87. You can definately argue about it, but it is a very individual thing and don´t get me wrong, Marina is a lovely personality so I can understand that the judges liked it. Marsha, who performed to Romeo and Juliet, had the highest score with 59.78, points, maybe a small payback from yesterday, where she did not get that much and it is so well deserved!

Honda, who want´s to phone the whole country today, has a very cute way of skating with positive attitude and quite a talent, to wrap you around her finger.

I also want to quickly mention the local hero Ivett Toth, who was breathtacking today, she is so mature, I love the look in her face she came 8th in total, after only being 15th in the short, skating the 7th best FS with 103.72 points.
Her start with triple Toe – Loop – triple Sal, was high class and super confident, you could really see how proud she was, to be able to skate at home soil. Her program featured a total of six triples and three different types of music and yet, it was an uninterrupted beauty and I am sure that Julia and the whole country, had a little tear in their eye today, while Ivett was on the ice.

Finally, good news for the bloody nose - Elizabet Tursynbaeva, who showed what a great skater she is, coming back with the 4th FS and a lovely fighting spirit, nailing all her elements and only losing a level at the stepsequence, where she gained a three.

Much more happened of course, the reports of my three kids will come tomorrow, same with ice dance, as my server will be terminated now and I also need some sleep before the Gala. ;)

Good night and thanks to our lovely ladies!

Apparently, if a skater qualifies for the FS and withdraws due to injury before the segment starts, if they were placed in the top 10 in the SP, then for qualifying points it's like they weren't entered at all (so basically Russia's only points that count for qualifying were Maria's 2 which means 3 spots for Russia)

But was Polina considered entered as she participated in the initial draw before injury?

Very disappointing worlds after the top 2 Russians got injured minutes before they each went on ice.

Honda was really sublime, I see shades of Asada in her. The future of Japanese women's figure skating is looking bright!

Sotskova is beautiful, but she lacks the polish that Russian skaters like Tsurskaya/Medvedeva have.

Is it only me who things Elizabet's PCS on her FS were too low? Just waay too low.

Skating in the 2nd warmup will do that to you. I also think Yuna was a bit hosed score-wise even though I agree with her finishing 4th. Her FS score should have been closer to the top 3 ladies IMO.

Wakaba's third again....imagine what happened if Alisa and Polina didn't have any injuries,..dear lord..:scard7:

Don't run... this kinda bothers me too :p Last season she was undefeatable by anyone except Zhenya and Sima. This season those two are out of the way, her skating has only improved in all aspects (the speed and power! the arms! the face! the nuances!), and the stars were aligned for her to take the gold when Polina withdrew. So it is definitely a pity that she couldn't capitalize on the opportunity. But I think she is truly something special and if I had to bet on one Japanese lady for 2018 right now, it would be Wakaba.

Her 3Lz-3T was not perfectly executed. She almost double-footed the lutz. and her landings were really scratchy.

Marsha, who performed to Romeo and Juliet, had the highest score with 59.78, points, maybe a small payback from yesterday, where she did not get that much and it is so well deserved!

Which protocol were you reading? Marin got the second highest TES at 68.29, just shy of Wakaba's 68.34. You mean her base value, perhaps?

And yet another proof of the magnificence of Team Orser. Coming back from 14th to end up 5th after that disastrous SP is quite something. Proud of you, Elizabet!!!:gclap:

The competition has long ended but my mind is still on "what could've been"? had Alisa skated here assuming with a clean program she could've been at least on 3rd place..this is the last big competition of the season and it was hard to say goodbye to Alisa's 2 beautiful programs but its even harder to say goodbye now to her FP that we didn't get the chance to see for the last time..

I was so pumped for Alisa for I truly believed she could medal here esp. after SP and I want her to medal so badly just so she have something good in her resume(int'l achievements), but too bad it didn't happen..Im looking forward to her next season though and I hope Olga Glinka will choreograph an even more beautiful program for her(fingers crossed)..Heads up kitty nothing to be sad of, regardless of what happened you are forever remembered as an elegant, cute, and a charming skater..come back stronger pls..🙏👊💪

The base value of course, for a better understanding, here is the protocol, I forgot to post it last night. ;)

http://www.isuresults.com/results/season1516/wjc2016/wjc2016_JuniorLadies_FS_Scores.pdf

I changed the sentence now, to make it more clear, maybe someone else didn´t read the protocols and was confused too, so thanks for your input, always appreciated :)

As for Maria, don´t be so negative about her :disagree: She was obviously expecting more of her performance, no need to rub the minor errors into her face. ;)

Very lovely skates by the top four. I am happy the Japanese ladies did so well but I think Maria should be so proud of herself and so should all of Russia. Losing your top two girls and you comeout with a world silver medal - pretty impressive. This is a bad year for Russia in skating. And if you look at the results well many countries would be thrilled with such a "bad year". Think about it injuries and problems in both seniors and juniors. IN seniors they have had growth issues and whatever problems with ET, Julia, Rad, injury issues to the top three pairs yet they still may medal maybe even gold, heartbreak in dance, then in juniors to see such tragedy the top two Russians and medal threats out. And senior worlds hasn't even started.

many talented juniors the following year for Russia will act
Fedichkina, may be Tsurskaya - and also Elizabeth Nugumanova Anastasia Gubanova Alexandra Proklova, Stanislava Konstantinova
Russian squadron return gold medal at home.

Crazy27, welcome to Golden Skate! And looking forward to great skates by the Russian Junior ladies next year!
