2018 Olympic Figure Skating Mens FS

Sam? Are you trying to steal my job? :p

(As usual, I'll add in the links tomorrow morning when I get up)

Here is the link for the World Feed coverage on the British Eurosport Player (starts in 4h from now):

If the past couple of days are anything to go by, there won't be anything on Eurosport's linear channels until tomorrow evening on BES2.

EDIT: Turns out that between me going to bed and the action starting, Eurosport decided that they would show LIVE coverage of Group 2 of the Men's FS.

Here is the link for the British Eurosport 1 coverage on the Player (starts at 5m 33s):

The LIVE coverage ended at the resurfacing. But, there were 2 hours of highlights of the rest of the competition shown on Eurosport 2 at 04:30 GMT.

Here is the link for the British Eurosport 2 coverage on the Player (starts at 4m 26s):

A bit of quad statistics

5-quad FS
Yuzuru Hanyu: 4Lo, 4S, 4S, 4T, 4T, 3A
Vincent Zhou: 4Lz, 4Lz, 4F, 4S, 4T
Nathan Chen: 4F, 4F, 4S, 4T, 4T, 3A

4-quad FS
Shoma Uno: 4F, 4Lo, 4T, 4T
Boyang Jin: 4Lz, 4S, 4T, 4T

3-quad FS
Javier Fernandez: 4S, 4S, 4T
Mikhail Kolyada: 4Lz, 4T, 4T
Brendan Kerry: 4S, 4T, 4T
Daniel Samohin: 4S, 4T, 4T
Keiji Tanaka: 4S, 4S, 4T

Everyone except Yuzuru and Nathan are planning two triple axels.

I have a feeling we are in for a splat fest. Of course, I hope that I am wrong.

I will wake up at 4:40 AM to watch Yuzuru Hanyu.

5-quad FS
Yuzuru Hanyu: 4Lo, 4S, 4S, 4T, 4T, 3A
I understand the logic, but Hanyu has the best 3A of his competitors and one of the best, period, in my opinion. Unless he’s having issues with the jump, if his 3A-1Lo-3S combination is removed for an extra 4T... there goes my favorite moment in the program. Though given what Orser said about Hanyu having a Plan A, B, and C, I wouldn’t be surprised at all if some of the quads are swapped out. In that sense, he’s lucky to have Boyang ahead of him, though Uno is a wildcard here.

I would not want to be Fernández, though, as between Hanyu and Uno is the Scylla and Charybdis placement of men’s skating. But he surprised me in the short, with a program I have no love for, so I hope he can do it again in the free.

Hanyu-Fernández-Uno remains my ideal podium, although if Aliev managed to claw his way to third I wouldn’t be mad. And if someone could tell Nathan Chen America isn’t mad at him, that would also be great. Honestly, I hate his free program — doesn’t play to his strengths, crams him into an antiquated box of what “artistry” is supposed to look like — and I don’t care how he finishes, just that he leaves the games with the number for a good sports psychologist and as few injuries and added trauma as possible.

Rizzo’s PCS scores are legitimately baffling, so I expect him to be criminally undermarked even if he gives another flawless performance as he did in the team event. His free skate is how you do a program like that without being corny or leaning into it too much and has great synchronization of movement and music, so I hope he has a clean skate, as he could be one to really watch. (And I can’t help but root for someone who skates with such unbridled joy.)

Prediction
Gold- Yuzuru
Silver- Uno
Bronze- Fernández

Olympics weird things can happen
Gold-Uno
Silver- Boyang
Bronze- Yuzuru

Shocking
Gold-Boyang
Silver-Aliev
Bronze-Rippon

Prediction for the FS: goldenskate.com user Fool will be a nervous wreck before during and after no matter the outcome :agree:

Hoping for good things for everyone really, but especially Yuzu, Javi, Nathan, Shoma and my ~future candidate Vincent

I have no preference among the top six - although I would really like Fernandez to make the podium.

I just want beautiful, clean, safe (in the injury sense) programs. From everyone. Minimal falls. :cheer2:

I want Adam Rippon to skate beautifully. And, yeah, I want a redemption program for Nathan Chen.

It looks as if we may not have the same problem with NBC as last night with competing live events.

Prime time is supposed to go to midnight Eastern, as opposed to 11 p.m. last night.

That way, NBC SHOULD be able to show both a sizable chunk of men's skating and a comeback story (whether NBC was hyping her or not) in Lindsey Vonn in skiing live on NBC and not NBCSN.

Watch the network prove me wrong. :(

I want Adam Rippon to skate beautifully. And, yeah, I want a redemption program for Nathan Chen.

Chen has a new (? Or is using an old, not enough of a superfan of his to know) top on in practice and is already looking better than he did in the team event, practice session for the short, and the short program. Still some two-footed landings, but I saw him land a 3A without issue and the majority of his jumping passes have been solid. (He also doesn’t seem to be approaching as if he’s afraid of them.) I don’t know if he’ll manage a completely clean skate, and his expression is a mix of inscrutable and maybe-I’m-just-projecting?-tense, but he went from pre-SP backlash to LEAVE HIM ALONE and is out of medal contention, so just not falling down will probably get him a redemption. If he can find a way to finish in top ten, though, that would be amazing and say quite a bit about his competitive drive, but he’d have to skate clean for that. But it’s the Olympics. Crazier things have happened.

Good luck to all skaters! I may or may not wake up to watch some. We'll see. I don't know if I can stand another heartbreak...

I am going to watch everyone. :cheer:

Me too!

And may I propose a drinking game for the rest of the festivities:
Whatever your beverage tonight/ this morning, have a small sip whenever:
- you want to tell your announcer "be quiet"
- your announcer says "He wants to do better"
- your announcer says "Olympic ice"
- the camera focuses on the top of their heads during spins
- you have to blink repeatedly and refocus on the skater when they go to an overhead shot and the glare of the arena light bar is reflected on the ice
-when the camera zooms in on the.. ahem, 'lower torso' area ...during a spin/ spiral/ lift.
- when the camera focuses on the skaters face while their body is doing something much more interesting.
Any others?

Go-go Javi! Vamos!

good luck to all the men.

Have a wonderful time all. I am out tonight so I'll be coming home late and watching it on tape. I hope it doesn't get spoiled for me before I get home.

It's 2 hours away, but I'm already starting to get nervous. Excited, but nervous.

My biggest wish for the night is that Nathan has a Mao redemption skate so he can end his Olys on a positive note. He really deserves it after the back breaking amount of hype the media placed on him. He needs to skate his best and then just leave all the negativity on the ice.

Since folks are given there hopes for Nathan here's my weird hope for him: that the top 3 men skate lights out. I say this because if true then I'll actually feel better. As a Nathan fan I say this quite sincerely, two clean skates from those top three would mean (at least to me) that even with perfect programs Nathan would not have deserved a medal.

This was really the problem with NBC and more particularly Tara and Johnny not being forthright in their predictions. Nathan always needed help from the top men to get on the podium. Hopefully in the next quad Nathan will improve his overall skating, landings, etc. so he can have the GOEs and PCS so he has something to fall back on. Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal know that even on a B+ day they're likely to win. Nathan's margins are too slim so it leads him to take insane risks, which do not help his long term career.

Especially during the slow mo replays

So excited, less than 2 hours to go. 11am start here and for the love of god, I''m hoping I'm not needed by anyone for a favour lol.
