2013-2014 Programs by Discipline

I agree the SP is a great improvement. You can tell he's a lot more settled with it, giving the extra sass he put in the end. And also, I think he bulked up a bit, so he doesn't look like a skinny boy skating to Prince.

And Riverdance, oh...that's going to be amazing. That straightline step sequence! My legs hurt just watching him!

I was wondering about that. It was kind of hard to tell because the video isn't quite in proportion. He seems to have put on a bit more bulk in the lower half, but I wasn't sure about the upper half. I suppose if he's training quads now it's a natural progression.

The steps in Riverdance are un-be-lievable. If he can do this program clean with all it's proper elements at any point this season...that's a 160+ program EASILY.

It also could be the costume.....it's pretty fitted, so maybe we can see the bulk more?

Possibly, although I think they took in the ruffle costume last season at one point and he did look very skinny then, except for when he wore the blue swirly shirt in ex's, when he looked much broader. So...Jason is an optical illusion I think is the answer. ;)

I think Jason's probably hit that point in life my Dad called "filling out." It's country-boy-speak for that time when a boy begins to transition to an adult man physically... broader through the chest and shoulders. Sturdier.

The difference is very noticeable (to me) in the short program. In many ways, it doesn't look like the same skater. He's much more of a presence than he was last year.

I've said before that I think Rohene Ward will become a very influential choreographer, and after viewing this early rendition of Riverdance, I am more convinced. This may be one of those situations where the skater and choreographer find their perfect matches. I've already ooh'd and aah'd over the straight line steps, but I love how, at the beginning, he does this little one-revolution counter-rotation leap, right on the beat.

I very much, VERY MUCH, like that the jump entrances and spins in the short and the long aren't the same... they're different and they indicate to me that attention is being paid to the music. Jason isn't mastering one Level 4 combination spin and shoehorning it into both the SP and FS. Even the catch-foot half-B spin has different "free-arm" positions in the SP and LP.

As an aside, I think it would be difficult to project artistically to a nearly empty arena.

riverdance is awesome for Jason - even the hair fits. I do remember some pretty slim skaters and artistically it did hurt the programs. Katelyn Osmond's coach looked pretty awkward in some of those spins form when he skated competitively for Canada. I wish he would wear his hair down without any pony tail (or attitude). It is a softer look. But then again Gwendal is back lol and there's going to be the Fabio comparisons.

Hair down? Naah. It looks like it's board straight and that would not look good on ice.

I suppose the ice dancers can get away with it... Gwendal and Charlie White come to mind... but their hair looks to have a curly texture that isn't a complete mess.

Personally, I think it's time he got a haircut. A fresh cut to compliment his grown-up skating. If he wants to keep it long, better to have it like it is.

I'll do more than share my impressions. ;) I widgeted with my computer to bring you...

Jason Brown - SP - Prince

Jason Brown - LP - Riverdance

Even if you didn't like his SP last year, give this year's a shot. It's been partially rechoreographed and I think he pulls it off with a lot more sass than last season - so sassy it's borderline suggestive.

Riverdance is too short ATM but IMO that's probably a build-him-up thing, since he's probably not fully adjusted to training at altitude yet. He clearly runs out of puff at the end (not surprising) but this is a really super program.

Wow, thanks for the videos. He's definitely working that SP more with more expression. With time, he'll bring that level of detail to his Riverdance free, because "Wow!" that was amazing for something that's still a work in progress. That first step sequence shows just how talented he is with skating skills. He almost doesn't need that opening quad, though I think he'll still attempt it by Nationals. The hydroblading move goes well with music as well.

Besides the jumps, I think he should add some toe steps in the second step sequence just to add some energy and a reference to Riverdance. For the choreographed steps, it's all about getting a rise from the audience. I'm sure, though, that as the season progresses, he'll have more energy through that pass to give it as much power as the first step sequence. On artistry, he can also work on building profoundness and, dare I say, gravitas as he has with his polished SP.

Actually, Jason's hair isn't naturally straight. If you look at it in training pictures he has quite wavy hair. He's admitted before it takes him 20 minutes to straighten it before comps/shows. Like mine, it's probably easier to control after it's been attacked with a straightening iron!

And that axel  To think all the people that were worried about him ever getting his 3axel!!

I don't want to tempt fate, but it really does look like he's in control of it, doesn't it?

Next stop: 4T...

Looks like there is a place fot the 4t at the beginning, yes...:)

And I have to admit, I was a bit concerned with the music choice, I always think of Bourne and kraatz when I hear it, but I like what i saw, & in particular what I took as a little homage to them with the hydro blading ...

AKIKO SUZUKI has released her musical choices for next season!

SP: Hymne à l'amour - coreografia di Massimo Scali
FP: The Phantom of the Opera - coreografia di Pasquale Camerlengo

Courtney Hicks: SP "Soul Surfer" soundtrack; FS "Evita"

"My short program is the Soul Surfer soundtrack by Marco Beltrami," Hicks said. ... Hicks, who was formerly coached by John Nicks, Ken Congemi and Scott Wendland, started working with Jere Michael and Alex Chang last November. Chang choreographed the short program.

The recently retired Jonathan Cassar has choreographed Hicks' new free skate, to Evita. The program will tell part of the story of Eva Perón's life, as depicted in the movie based on the Andrew Lloyd Webber musical.

Hypothetically, can Courtney still qualify for the Olympics if she's competing internationally as a junior?

Sure. If she's top three, she will likely be sent.

Precedent: Richard Dornbush went to Worlds in 2011 after competing on the JGP (including winning the JGPF) in the fall when he won silver at Nationals.
