2013-2014 Programs by Discipline

Thank you Deedee1 for all your information. I couldn't find the story of Samuragochi on the internet. Do you know if Muku also is the violinist playing the Sonatina in the link you posted before? In that case I find her progress remarkable, because it seems to me very difficult to make any nuances without fingers and a wrist. Unless she has a more complex prothesis now. In the vid with Mao she even had much difficulty to bow straight... In my ears the piece sounds like a heavy one, so I cannot observe special attention from the composer to her handicap.
I am really very curious about Dai's new program. I think that it's not an easy choice, but that 's what I always like about his programs, except the one that Morozov made for him this year...

I was just about to share this. The video quality isn't great, and you can barely see her in places, but it's nice to finally have a recording.

ETA: You can tell that she's still getting used to the choreography. Hopefully, her monthly trips to Canton will have had a big pay-off by SC. She did seem tense; her jumps weren't of the quality that we saw in her Instagram videos. Still, a very good effort for July.

I don't really see the supposed artistic progress. I didn't like the step sequence (she seemed slow) or the music it was set to. She cannot interpret the sections of the program where the music is lighter. She is like a bull in a china shop trying to do ballet. It doesn't fit.

You can tell that she has bad interpretation from the shaky, blurry fancam? More power to you.

^ Thank you so much for the link. I see Zueva is working very hard on the program. Interesting combination between the music and Gracie's strong skating, strong jumps and spins... I hope we will be able to see this music will come naturally from Gracie's heart, and not from what it's taught from outside. To get to the point, probably like Rosalynn Sumners at 1984 Olympics that she could feel the music and interpret every code of it, with strong jumps.

I have played this music before. It's absolutely lovely, and suits Mao perfectly.

And I think it looks so different from her first nocturne. Of course this is only a small clip. But, what a difference in maturity as a skater

I think Gracie would improve throughout the season. If you compare her Skate Detroit FS from last year and WTT FS from this year, you can see that Gracie has became less stiff at the end.

I don't expect Gracie to be artistic as 18-year-old Yuna at Worlds or Mao of that age by Olympics, but I do think she would make improvements from last season by then-which would be great.

So matured skaters use the same music, keep the same established style. Gracie (or Zueva) is trying to grow.

Gracie's music cut is a lot like Caroline Zhang's from 2008, with the exception of perhaps one section. The program looks okay, though it was hard to see details from that video. Would still like to see some more transitions between jumps and she still looks a bit rushed, but I'm sure she'll settle into the program with time. The one music cut that I have a big problem with is at 3:41, right after her first spiral. You do NOT mess with the main theme, especially at such a big moment in the program. It just sounds unfulfilled and incomplete, which is not exactly something in Gracie's skating that needs to be brought out...

Yes, that part (3:41) bothers me too music-wise. But after all, much better than former years' programs.

Oh dear.

As I had suspected- it is looking a little...meh.

I think I have to start with the music cut- why or why that interlude?! She could have pieced together the Prologue, the Waltz and the Adagio and some other connecting passage but the current cut is anti-climactic and almost too bland for words. Again- I'd hate to compare Zijun's but her Sleeping Beauty was literally ballet on ice. All the elements were there. But then again it's still early days. I really hope Zoueva does something about this piece.

Program-wise- I can see some artistic growth but not much. Again- early days, but what I saw was a disjointed structure of music, jumping passes, a Morozovian step sequence and beautiful spins. I think the program would work with different music to be honest. THIS IS TCHAIKOVSKY! It's far too busy and does not have any balletic element AT ALL. Apart from the well placed spins...urgh.

Here's hoping Gracie refines it more later on. But I will reiterate again- that music cut is horrendous.

I agree. The music is bland and boring. Marina makes good music selections for her dance teams, but she did Gracie no favors by selecting Sleeping Beauty for her. It’s a horrible fit. She doesn’t have the grace and sophistication in her skating to pull it off. I, too, think the program would have had more impact if it was set to more powerful music. The music cuts used for the step and choreo sequences almost put me to sleep and the choreography seems disjointed from the music.

This is still a juniorish program compared to what the top skaters will be skating to. Lots of crossovers, element-to-element skating, few transitions, a lack of emotional connection to the music. Are we certain that Scott Brown didn't secretly choreograph this mess?

I'm suprised it wasn't mentioned, but at least according to rumors (it's nothing confirmed yet), it seems we might have another Carmen program up - Adelina was skating her new SP at the Ice, and it seems she's part of the warhouse users this season. Maybe People will still like it more than her Aguilera program though
(Again, it's just a rumor as of now)

It's true Gracie seems to put a lot of effort into her artistic development, but I'd say too that this music choice wasn't the best for her. It's not just that she's young, she didn't have as many seasons as other young girls (like Adelina or Liza) to perform and get used to selling a program to a huge crowd. So it's kind of natural she's still lacking in that department. Maybe choosing something within her comfort zone would have helped her more to work on her presentation and interpretation skills. She's young, she can still challenge herself with artistic growth and new things after she's good with the basics. And mainly this music choice might earn her a lot of critics about her not doing a good job with it, because she'll be compared to other ladies who are more ballatic than her naturally. Maybe it'll work, or maybe it might just get her a huge amount of unnecessary criticism.
Anyway, thanks for posting the link, but with this quality it's tough to say anthing, so I think I'll just won't at this point and wait for her later outings. But it's good she's getting it out there so early, more time to refine it and maybe change some details.

As for Mao, the clip is too short to really say much about the program, but I'm all excited that her dress is pretty. After the Tarasova years, I'm always a little nervous about how her dresses will look

So true, so true! So far, both her EX and SP dress look very nice! :)
