If, as Brian Orser said, Hanyu was unconscious for ANY period of time after the collision, he never should have been allowed to compete. Orser can shrug and say, "Well, he insisted on skating!" all he wants, but this was a complete failure on the part of Orser, the referee, and the medical personnel. Han Yan going out there was bad enough, but from what I've heard he at least didn't have a head injury. I honestly don't have strong enough language to express this without swearing. I don't know if there's even any recourse for something like this, but if there was I'd want everyone involved to get fined and/or fired. This was completely unacceptable.
Hanyu fell five times. FIVE TIMES, on an incredibly hard surface, going at high speeds. Can you imagine what would have happened if his head had hit the ice again? This is how someone ends up with a traumatic brain injury, or worse. I don't blame Hanyu for any of this -- he's a competitor and obviously wasn't able to think clearly. Someone, ANYONE, needed to step in here.
Ugh. This reminds me of what Brady Hoke, the coach for the Michigan Wolverines football team, did earlier this year when he allowed the quarterback to stay in the game with a concussion because he wanted to play. He should have been fired over it.
I'm just so, so angry. Skating through pain and injuries happens all the time, but you don't play fast and loose with head injuries. Ever.
