2016-2017 Programs by Discipline

Per Sarah Brannen, who reported Mirai's music choices in the IN series on Mirai's choreo process:

@SarahandDrew
I have not personally seen the program, but my understanding is that @mirai_nagasu's SP is to Chopin Nocturne No. 20.

BTW, Mirai's choreographers:
Jeff Buttle for SP
David Wilson for FS

LOVING the articles on Mirai's programs. I'm excited to see both works. Jeffrey has made some real magic with Chopin for Patrick and Yuzu so I'm looking forward to seeing what comes with working with Mirai. No. 20 kind of makes more sense to me in that it's the nocturne I recognized. It also has a GORGEOUS ending.

Very understated but if she brings her On Golden Pond vibes to it it could be a real moment.

Going crazy with the secrecy about the Russian ladies' programs. The season cannot start soon enough!

I love Ashley's FP choice. I was mesmerized when Jeremy skated to it. I bought the CD, and then just bought the piano music which I'm in the process of learning. ALthough it doesn't sound like it's an emotional piece, it really is if you follow the melody--though subtle--then the manner in which the music picks up in the middle and actually builds in tempo and volume....it has interesting variations of its main theme as well.I t switches key which makes it even more interesting, and then it returns to the original key at the end. I think it will be great for her. She can show both her lyrical and powerful sides. I think she can balance this well. IT is definately a challenge for me on piano--but fun to play (I had to rearrange a little of it...the part with the vocal lines because the melody was not clear in the piano section) Thank you Jeremy for bringing this music.

Ashley Wagner will be skating to Exogenesis: symphony part 3, already known to skating world by the programs of Jeremy Abbott and the Kerrs.

ETA: I have no idea why the link doesn't work. Just check her Instagram.

Oh No.... If I was Ashley's choreographer - she needed another leading lady routine - Salome, Cleopatra - Arabian style theme - or Cabaret or Sunset Boulevard but not MUSE...we shall see!

Daisuke Murakami revealed his programs for next season. Both choreographed by Lori Nichol. He's keeping his SP.

SP: "Bring Him Home" by Josh Groban
FS: "Pagliacci" by Andrea Bocelli

 Great for Daisuke - Glad he is keeping his SP although I did LOVE Anniversary. 'Pagliacci by Bocelli sounds wonderful..Nice choice from Lori

Still edged in my mind is this beautiful piece nocturne, skated by Cynthia Phaneuf and choreographed by David Wilson during the 2009-10 season. I am sure Miria and Jeff will also make it magnificent!

I'm glad they're moving in a new direction. I was honestly getting tired of Ashley needing to play a character or to have lyrics dictate a lot of her musical intepretation as with her programs last season. With Shae-Lynn, I think she and Ashley will continue to explore new grounds. Who knows, maybe she'll go back to playing a female character with lyrics for the Olympic season since that season tends to be where the skaters go really safe and back into their comfort zone.

Y/Z : painful to see Yu at the end.
P/J : first time Peng looks like she's having fun and really trusts her partner. The throw jump is so much better, like she has a chance of landing it with a partner who cooperates in the throw technique, rather than flinging her out.

As I watched Y/Z, I had the thought that Yu and Jin are so sensitive and empathetic, and excellent skaters as well as interpreters, that they could make anyone look good. Sort of like, Ekaterina Gordeeva had something out of this world with Sergei, but skate with anyone: she can make them look good.
