2016-2017 Programs by Discipline

Sergei did rock the pleather

I was reacting more to the music cuts (both for Sergei and Elladj's SP) and the actual programs than the performances. Sergei pops and Elladj is, well, inconsistent. But if Elladj is inconsistent, Chafik can be :hopelessness:

In the meantime, we just need the season to start so we can actually see!

I know--thank goodness the Olympics are coming! At least there's gymnastics to watch. Don't love it as much as skating, but I do enjoy it.

The skating is beautiful; Adam's spins are outrageously gorgeous; and the Rippon lutz at the end is spectacular with the suspension in the music. I find the song to be too much of one note, one tone, but Adam may make it work. I think this year's medley helped him show so many different moods. But that's my only worry.

You'd have to be there in person or have a better video of it to do the program justice. It was absolutely gorgeous. Many people in the audience were in tears and he got a standing O which you don't get at small competitions. I think this program is going to bring him far. Kind of like his show program to "O" by Coldplay, he had many contemporary moves that could very easily be awkward and weird but he made them work perfectly and added to the program.

As much as people complain about Adam's lack of pushing the technical envelope in his skating, he very much does push the artistic one. Very innovate program with interesting and complex choreography that complements the music. His choreography is seriously so cool and different. He's not Mr. Transitions or Skating Skills, but every move is so purposeful and interesting and elegant...so much more than just waving around his arms or posing or skating fast to build drama.

Well, I saw the program in person at Nationals. The impact was spectacular. When he did the solo 3Axel in the first part of Blackbird, the audience collectively gasped, including me; it gave me chills, and I teared up. That Rippon lutz is otherworldly, especially when he does it in a section where the music is suspended to only drums. Adam did get a standing ovation, and everyone in the audience knew that he won the event. Except for a few back-pedaling commentators.

I don't agree with your opinion that I'd have had to be there in person or better video to do the program justice.

I relate it to what Ellen Burstyn said in her book. As a theater actress, she was worried how to connect with the audience when she transitioned to movies. The director Elia Kazan said that if she looked directly into the camera and imagined her audience, she would feel that connection with the audience, and the movie viewers would get it. She said it worked. I know it's a little whoo-whoo, but I absolutely believe that such connections can transcend time and distance. :luv17:

Yes!, it's a whole different vision of artistry. Adam approaches poetry with his skating. Someone posted months ago (was it you?:)) that as soon as the music changes to Blackbird, his whole demeanor changes, even though he's building up to his second 3Axel. That's being one with the music and emotion and transferring that emotion to the audience.

On the subject of interesting choreography, I'm repeating myself, but I'm blown away every time at how Adam pre-echoes the over-the-head arm movement in the Beatles program 'tano Lutz. It makes the movement so much more meaningful and the synchronicity is beautiful.

Castelli/Tran SP ... I adore  their difficult entrance moves into the DS. Really wow factor for the ending! I like Marissa in a pony tail. I don't like the music, so that is 2 for 2 for C/T music this year for me. It's too metallic or something. I love to see this pair go further into the lyrical aspect that Mervin is so good at, like Summertime.

Denney/Frazier LP ... Absolutely love:love: it, which surprises me because I'm a little biased against the music, but in this program I was completely on board and experienced the music in a new way.

I think they've been watching Papadakis / Cizeron. There's something about the way they complete their movements when touching each other's arms, almost like a lingering caress, that I think is new. And it reminds me of P/C.

I could be totally off base here, but hey, it's my opinion and I noticed it right away. I think their artistic interpretation has really improved, since they completely held my attention through one piece of music that I don't especially like.

US Pairs is going to be so interesting this year! I really think it's going to be a battle for those two spots.

For sure a battle. I already can't stand the thought that one of Tarah/Danny, Alexa/Chris, or Haven/Brandon won't go to worlds.

Agreed! That stood out to me, too. Also, THEY LANDED SBS JUMPS :eeking:...that is the key with U.S. pairs, so if they can do that with the 2A-2A sequence instead of 1As, my money's on them for one of the worlds spots.

(Opinion: I want it to be D/F and K/O on the World Team, but we've yet to see S/K or K/O compete, so I have no idea how likely that is.)

I've been having a recurring dream that Tamara Moskvina moves to the U.S. and starts a Pairs School. The U.S. sweeps the pairs podium at the next Worlds.

ETA - oops. I guess it's hard to sweep the podium with only 2 spots. Never mind tho, we'll figure out a way to do it.

Oh, they singled one of the axels? I missed that. Well, it's so early. K/O got criticized for only having a 2A-2A last season, rather than a 3-2. But they did it so well. They talked in that recent interview about working to make their 3Tw higher, so I'm looking forward to seeing how that looks this year.

 I pretty much agree with you (but why do you feel that way? just curious), but S/K have great choreography and something dynamic. If they can just land the jumps.

 I like the way you think.

1. It was planned, according to various sources.
2. Haven and Brandon actually got me into pairs (when they medaled at 2014 SA), so of course I want them there, and I've met K/O and they are some of the sweetest, most gracious skaters you'll ever meet, so I'm very biased. I like S/K, but the other two moreso.

Also from Skate Detroit, Nicolas Nadeau is keepin SP from last season: For Me - Formidable by Charles Aznavour; choreo by Shae-Lynn Bourne; FP: Elvis Presley voice overs with 2001: A Space Odyssey fanfare theme at the beginning & 3 Elvis songs – “That’s All Right (Mama),” “Bridge Over Troubled Water” & “Blue Suede Shoes” . I KNEW the SP sounded familiar from last season.
