2016-2017 Programs by Discipline

Also from Skate Detroit, Nicolas Nadeau is keepin SP from last season: For Me - Formidable by Charles Aznavour; choreo by Shae-Lynn Bourne; FP: Elvis Presley voice overs with 2001: A Space Odyssey fanfare theme at the beginning & 3 Elvis songs – “That’s All Right (Mama),” “Bridge Over Troubled Water” & “Blue Suede Shoes” . Source: Unseen Skaters

The FP is an awesome concept, and I love the program. Did Shae-Lynne choreograph? I can see the influence of one of his proclaimed skating idols: Kurt Browning. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YIySZr-zLVc

Maddie Aaron and Max Settlage

SP Edith Piaf’s “Hymne à l’amour” (revised layout to same SP music as last year, when they could not compete much)

FS Scheherazade

Julie Marcotte is choreographer for both programs.

Haven Denney and Brandon Frazier

SP selections from the musical Don Juan (choreo by Zoueva)

Today's IN article (re their FS at Skate Detroit) says that they competed their SP at Skate Milwaukee. (I had not known.)

She tweeted that that was a great close on her all time fave program. So she's not doing it. She's kept it as a show number, but not competitive

Thanks for the article link. Great to learn more about their recovery, their current training environment, and their hopes for the future.

I l8ve edith piaf's hymne a l'amour..... I will cheer that program even if they just stand there :)

For sure a battle. I already can't stand the thought that one of Tarah/Danny, Alexa/Chris, or Haven/Brandon won't go to worlds.

Don't forget about Calalang and Sidhu among the U.S. Pairs. They missed last year because of his injuries and surgery, as did Aaron and Settlage. U.S. Pairs will be back to full strength this year, and it should be a great battle at Nationals to see who will get the two spots to go to Worlds.

Didn't Elvis always come on to the stage with the fanfare from 2001: A Space Odyssey? So Nadeau is just keeping the Elvis theme "real". Wonder if Javier Fernandez will do that as the intro to his Elvis Free Skate.

Alexia Paganini's free is to the nutcracker grand pas according to this video: https://youtu.be/pll7Bxd-A4U

I honestly had to mute the music and only stayed to watch the triple triple combo at the beginning (which was very nice). I actually cannot get through listening to nutcracker in any other season than autumn/December. Honestly Nutcracker and swan lake should not be used anymore. As a dancer, I hear the music way too much and no one in the current field seems to be able to do it justice (besides Mao and Carolina should she return). Anyway, rant aside, there are so many more music choices one could decide upon, even if people want to do something with ballet. There are so any ballets people haven't used yet or at least are used far less frequently. Copellia while less commonly used actually has really good music. La Bayadere is amazing! Alissa's program to it in 2006 was great! And the fact that no one else really used that music made it more special (especially at 2005 skate America). Cosaire, la file du Pharon and the rite of spring are great options too. I would say firebird because there are so many sections that people forget about, but those last too sections have been used so much that it would be more of the same. Anyway, point is even if people want to skate to a ballet, there are far better/more options out there than just swan lake and nutcracker. Alright, this is the end of ballet geeking out.

I love Satoko, but I won't believe her dedication to the Star Wars free skate unless she wears Princess Leia buns on her head.

Just kidding. Hope she shows up as Daisy Ridley and kicks a$$ all season.

Oh my god, now you've got me thinking. If none of your amazing suggestions feels just right for her, I'd really love to see a half and half look, like Murakami did a few seasons back, only Satoko foes a half bodysuit of C-3PO, with the other half R2-D2.

Awful, but epic and amazing and would get so many views...maybe even a prop filled light saber exhibition later this season. Lol.

What about music from the ballet version of "Alice in Wonderland?" I remember doing it at my ballet school when I was in 5th grade....I was one of the painters and one of executioners when we performed it lol. Ah.......hahaha. Memories!

I think I'm kinda "Nutcrackered out", although I do love the music. Of the Big 3 Tchaikovskys, Sleeping Beauty seems to be the least used. What do you think of that, or Giselle? Although I'm sure it's also considered to be a war horse, I would love to see a male skater use Don Quijote, which I LOVE. I can't remember seeing that recently. I started thinking about D.Q. again after watching John Curry (ballet dancer on ice!) and Takeshi Honda skate to this music. Curious to know the perspective of a ballet dancer. :thank:

I disagree on Swan Lake. I'd love to see someone skate to it this season. Who from the top ladies skated to it last? I'd love to see more variety of music though, surely out of nearly 2 hours long score there is still plenty unused music left.

Mao, I think? Most people seem to have been using Black Swan lately. (in various disciplines, I don't recall ladies specifically.)

If I hear Why Don't You Do Right one more time. I think I might cry, really really cry. #LPIDI2016

Giselle would be great! Sleeping beauty is rather meh musically for me. It was the one ballet Tchaikovsky wrote in order to fit choreography already set to a certain extend, so it's rather mechanical/predictable imo. A male skater should use don Q but not necessarily the parts that most skaters use (irina's don Q program during 2000-2001). Like how about the actual men's variation??? Oh how I wish there was a John curry in the current field! Patrick comes close, but he has quads and elements to worry about, so he can't be as musical in competitions programs. Glad I could offer my opinion :)

Thank you for this info; the first cut of Nic's program is indeed Space Odyssey music with Elvis talking over it and introducing himself. Although I  Nic, I found this first part of his program to be cringe-inducing. Very much Titanic voice-over land. But I love Nic and his showmanship, so I am hoping he can sell it.

Black Swan counts as swan lake imo. It's pretty much the exact same score tbh. Nobody really uses parts of the music that are vastly different from the ballet. After hearing the same music cuts over and over again, you do get tired of them. However, if someone was wise enough to use the Spanish or neopolitan dances from swan lake and change it up, that would be much appreciated!

Also, side note: I liked the last minute and a half of Mao's. The first couple of minutes were alright but she really made that step sequence to the coda of the the pas really special and grand and celebratory, which is what the music (and the story line) calls for
