I've seen a report that Virtue and Moir's Free Dance with be to Latch by Sam Smith. Virtue and Moir are training with Dubreuil and Lauzon now, and Latch is the type of music they seem to prefer (at least with Papadakis and Cizeron). It’s a slow, easy beat that allows the skaters to move continuously throughout the program.

However, that's also the same music that Meryl Davis danced to when she won Dancing with the Stars in the U.S. It's probably just a coincidence, but there also will be some Davis and White fans who won't be thrilled with this choice.

I just don't care for Sam Smith. If Virtue and Moir manage to do such an awesome dance that I can ignore the fact I have to listen to Sam Smith, that is a great achievement.

Yes, Tessa and Scott are on the record re that Sam Smith's Latch is their FD music. (See Ted Flett's interview with them yesterday for GS, for example :).)

Must be just a coincidence re Meryl and DWTS. With no disrespect to Meryl, I will state the obvious and say that lots of people (prob. including quite a few in the skating community) are not glued to TVs and computer screens to watch DWTS.

My experience has been that quite a few Ice Dance fans watch Dancing With the Stars in the U.S., particularly so during the season that had Meryl Davis and Charlie White in the cast. DWTS is a highly rated show in the U.S. among the general public as well as skating fans.

Also, one of the more popular ice shows on TV in the U.S. during the last two years was Shall We Dance on Ice. In this show, the pro dancers from Dancing With the Stars would do a dance to a particular rhythm on a stage (e.g. Foxtrot, Quick Step, Tango) and then ice dancers would do a program to the same rhythm on the ice. It was an interesting way to contrast and compare the way dances are done on DWTS and on the ice. During the first special, Meryl and Max did their tango on the stage and a brief clip of their winning free dance to Latch was shown.

But again, that all happened in the U.S. and not Canada, so I'm sure that the selection of the music for Virtue and Moir's Free Dance was just a coincidence. But there are some "Davis and White/Virtue and Moir Conspiracy Theorists" who are sure to point out the significance of the music for Virtue and Moir's Free Dance. The rivalry between the fans of both teams is pretty fierce.

Virtue/Moir will be skating to Prince for their SD.

Regarding Bjork, she's someone I wish I could like more than I actually do. I like that she's cool, unconventional, really took electronica far, and does cool things with her voice. But I can't say I actually like her music. I used to like "It's Oh So Quiet" because that song was something wildly different from what was being played on MTV during that time period and was refreshing for its time. But I can't listen to it more than once because I do find it screechy. I will say I loved her in the movie Dancer in the Dark even if Lars Von Trier is overindulgent, but he wouldn't be him if he wasn't. The song from the movie, "I've Seen it All", and her performance of it at the Oscars is one of my favorites and IMO should have won the Oscar.

I need to watch the performance, but for me, the real issue is that Leonova always picks music that seems exciting on paper, but her actual skating to it leaves much to be desired.

I feel the same way about Nanci Griffith. Really good, if sometimes overly-sentimental and sanctimonious songwriter, with this straggly little-girl voice that just annoys the bejesus out of me at times. Kate Bush can be like that sometimes too--and I adore Kate. Really, De gustibus non est disputandum is really such a useful idea, because taste is so personal and what's the point of arguing about it? Especially if you're trying to argue, in effect, that you have better taste than someone else. Maybe you do, but it's not a strategy to Win Friends and Influence People.

Agree 100% that plenty of ice dance fans (esp. in the U.S.) will be readily aware of Meryl and Latch from two years ago ... for the reasons that you stated.

And please don't get me wrong -- I was not complaining that you mentioned the coincidence (to which I had been oblivious).
Appreciate very much that your posts have been of an informational  -- as opposed to pot-stirring -- nature.

Hoping that at this point, the coincidence will be a non-issue for Meryl fans. Hoping, hoping, hoping.

ETA:
When I made note that lots of people (including those attentive to skating) are not glued to DWTS (lots are/were, but lots of others are/were not, even during D/W's season), I was supporting my agreement that V/M's music choice is a coincidence. As for the Disson shows, I (as a sample of one ;)) casually watched bits of the skating and more or less ignored the off-ice dancing. Just a sample of one, but I would venture to guess that I am not unique.

B/S SD. No offence to their fans but I can't get past her costuming or lack thereof..

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eqhWl57IcSQ

The funny thing is it looks like they did spend time getting it to look half naked just right. it looks bunched up and shrugged off on one side on purpose... i suspect that much time and effort was spent getting her to look undressed in the way they want. Also the sparkly bra under is just wonderful.

I don't mind the costume... but not sure it fits the music... there likely are some programs this would work well with... this just seemed random.

I think it may have been helped if she should was wearing more like guy boxer briefs. If they are going for the wearing the boyfriends clothes look, include the underwear.

If she was trying for a sexy look, she got it. I worry about costume deductions, though, and even more, can you imagine how cold her tighs must feel?

Agree, StitchMonkey. Even loose shorts would so, if made in a soft and elastic material.

The Zahorski / Guerreiro SD is a Christina Aguilera medley according to their Wikipedia entries. Does anyone know what the two songs are?

I love the strange music for Danielle WU / Nik MIRZAKHANI :"Black Swamp Village" by The Speakeasies Swing Band, and the jazzy old style Swing: Diga Diga Do by Big Bad Voodoo Daddy

If Bobrova wears the thin white "boyfriend shirt" over the black panties and bra in competition, she is sure to get a costume deduction. The Dance rules say that the lady must wear a skirt except when the Special Rules for the year permit an exception. The costume exception for 2016-17 in Dance is that the lady may wear shorts or trousers. No way that Bobrova's costume has a skirt, shorts or trousers. Hopefully, that was not her costume for the Grand Prix events, or if it was, one of the Dance judges in Russia told her that it would not be acceptable.
