Right after Ashley got her scores, she said to Raf that she wasn't concerned by the point difference.

And she shouldn't be. If she has a repeat of last year's FS there's probably nothing Edmunds can do even with an 8-point advantage.

Still, this is vintage Wagner all over again. She is d*** lucky that everyone else flubbed up too...or she would be in an even bigger hole.

It should be concerning to her because while the mistake is OK here at US Nationals (no one else showed up, right?), it'll bury her internationally. It's a hump that she cannot seem to get over and she will forever be B-list if she can't shake it off.

And Gold - I think her own words afterward basically sum it up.

Popping jumps is inexcusable and this is 3 out of 4 competitions that Gracie has done that. I'm about to give up on her. She doesn't have the mental makeup to be a winner.

This is the kind of sentiment that leads to bad skating. If Ashley has an SP like that at Worlds, she'll be so far behind that she could cost the US a spot. If she's "The Diva" of US skating, then we're doomed. Now, If She wins the Free Program and still finishes 4th. I'd send her but, that's the ONLY way she gets to go.

So I looked at the list and became good friends with google and found out that Carly is Gracie's twin?? Wow how come I never knew that

I just hope Ashley and Gracie deserve it as opposed to just being pushed up as the predestined team they've built up for years. Even if it's just due to being less crappy than the rest of the field, I really don't want to feel like (for example) Tyler and Mirai got shortchanged in both segments to make it happen.

I think sometimes people don't give Ashley and Gracie enough credit for the things they do well. They have much better, more convincing programs and deliver many elements with great skill that is far beyond the rest of the American ladies field. Tyler's skating is not at their level yet - I am ok with seeing that reflected in the PCS scores. Mirai's program today was so completely expressionless - Ashley and Gracie deserve to receive points for the effort they put into creating and selling internationally competitive programs. Gracie's step sequence and spins today were very good. I never thought I'd her do a triple flip-double toe in a short program (:palmf:), but she landed it in the second half, and was able to salvage a lot of valuable points after a big mistake. Ashley delivered her program with spirit and personality, and her triple loop and double axel were great. I am also frustrated that Ashley and Gracie fail to live up to their potential time and time again but I don't understand this mentality that they're "being held up" or getting points they don't deserve. If other people had delivered today, Ashley and Gracie would have fallen in the rankings. Unfortunately, basically everyone was terrible and even the people who didn't make big mistakes failed to deliver anything noteworthy (with the exception of Polina who was actually great). Idk I don't see the conspiracy here.

Because they don't look that much alike. However......If you listen to them speak.... You can't tell them apart. It's HILARIOUS!!

I never realized this but man.... the us women, once the powerhouse in the sport has repeatedly hit rock bottom to another level. Just damn.:hopelessness: Anyways good job for Polina but still not convinced with her. She still slow and she's competing with the Japanese and Russians who are miles better than her. Gracie in my opinion is the only one who can contend for the medal at worlds. And At least her triple flip is getting better. I believe Polina will now overtake Ashley. Ashley is always the same thing every year. I don't see any progress.

They are fraternal twins, therefore they don't look any more alike than any two sisters. They do sound very similar though!

Compared to the hype and wild event last season, this time it was just overall a bit disappointing. Hopefully, most of them can skate better in the FS.

1. Polina Edmunds: I have to say, this is when her consistency is really taking the spotlight! She reminds me of Satoko Miyahara in NHK - a meltdown for most of the ladies and then her being the only one to shine. Everything looked very nice and polished today. I still do not understand why her StSq GOE was that high, but it's nationals so I have no problem with it. Tomorrow will be interesting, since this is the first time Polina is in the lead of the SP of a very big competition. Will she be able to skate well under intense pressure? And with the chance that her rivals tend to be good underdogs?
2. Gracie Gold: I was really hoping to see a clean skate from her. She is very skilled and I do enjoy watching her when she is clean, but unfortunately she just can't seem to get it together. After Ashley left the door wide open for Gracie to at least go ahead of her, I wanted Gracie to skate really well. I guess she was just too nervous. Skating last in the FS is not easy, but if Gracie miraculously pulls of a Yuna Kim at 2013 Worlds and 2014 Olympics, then that will be good for her.
3. Tyler Pierce: Great performance! The 3Lo and the StSq were beautiful and overall everything was executed very well. I haven't watched Tyler that much, so I don't know if she is more of a SP skater than an FS skater, but either way I hope that she skates well for the FS!:cheer:
4. Ashley Wagner: That 3F combo is a problem for her. After a flawless one at the Skate Canada SP, she stepped out of it at both NHK and the GPF, and now she got the combo here but fell. She tends to land it in the FS though (with the URs obviously) so I don't think she'll count it out. Anyways, I was actually surprised at how the score was pretty much fair. Maybe not the placement, but she is still in the range for the podium. And she can beat Polina by a large margin if Polina skates badly, so she still has a chance for the gold, that is, if she repeats her FS showing from the GPF or last year's nationals.
5. Mirai Nagasu: Underscored. She deserved to pass 60, even with the edge call. I'm not too sure about how the layback spin levels work, but it seemed clear that the judges did not want her to score too high. As for the boot, I hope that they can find a solution quickly. It would be devastating if she had to withdraw when she has a good chance of being on the podium (after this disappointing SP). On the other hand, finding new boots in just a day is difficult. I wish all the best for her and her team.
6. Mariah Bell: Good for her for making the final flight after skating in the first group! Her performance today was still good even with the mistakes. She's skating first in the final group which is after the warm-up so that will be great for her. Plus, unless someone from an earlier group has a flawless killer performance, she won't be as pressured as the others coming after. Go Mariah!
7. Bradie Tennell: I enjoyed her skate. She's the leader of the second-last group with a solid score, so I hope that she can skate to her full potential here.
9. Hannah Miller: Wonky combo as expected, but the 3F was stunning! Hannah has been struggling a lot so if she has a wonderful FS here then it'll be great for her. I hope that she can give out the performance that she desires.
10. Angela Wang: I thought she was underscored. I don't think she deserved a 60+, but the judges should've been a bit more nicer with her. I hope that she can have a greater performance in the long!
11. Courtney Hicks: Jumps are still all over the place, and the two falls looked painful. Courtney isn't the definition of a consistent skater (like most US skaters) so it's hard for me to visualize how she may do in the FS, but I hope that she can pull off a better performance. She still has a chance to move up drastically!
12. Karen Chen: Again, the two falls...:hopelessness:. Karen is so talented all around but if she isn't consistent then her scores won't get better. I hope that she redeems herself with a great FS, maybe like the one last year.

Sorry but tonight was disappointing and pedestrian to put it nicely. (relatively speaking) The future does not look too bright for the US. Polina's jumps are ur although her skating is beautiful. Courtney needs to move to Raf to fix her chronic hip dropping on landings Ashley and Gracie are not going to be top 3 at worlds or 2018 Olympics - Unless USFS starts rewarding and motivating some of these younger girls to push them up quickly. Russia doesn't hold up skaters at their nationals and it creates healthy competition and motivation. Get some young blood in there. Sheesh how many years now have we had the same 2 girls repping the US???? Seriously tonight was like watching the slow train to nowhere :noshake:
