2016 World Championships Ladies SP

nope the crowd is one of the best I have either seen, yes, they cheering the loudest for their home favorite , but they also give Zijun a SO and booed Julian's low score, they definitely acknowledging great performances when they saw one.
they cheered for Gabby and little Bet too!

Fill in the blanks. Sochi to Sotnikova is like Boston to ..............

So now we need to compare which overscoring was more blantant?

I guess if we need to accept overscoring then we might as well go the next step.

Sochi/Sotnikova was an "in your face" overscored event. Gracie's PCS here, just a few points too high is nothing compared to Sochi with an obvious unfair connection between judge or judges wife (I forget) and skater.

I am so sick since I saw the score Gracie got. OMG, she is not guilty. I can't believe it's true. Almost 10 points given as a shield, for nothing! BOOOOOOOOOO!

I was at the arena today. What a wonder! The audience's darlings were Mirai and Gracie, clearly. Here are some thoughts of a first time live viewer (P.S: nothing against any skater. Just my views)

1) So Youn: I always root for my girl So Youn and never understand why she doesn't get any PCS love. Watching her live, I get it somewhat. She skates very slowly. I watched the last 3/4 groups live and she was honestly one of the slowest. Lovely arms but really needs to work on speed.

2) Mao: I'll be upfront, I'm a big Mao fan and am disappointed with how things turned out. But you know what, she tried her best and that is all that matters to me. I got to see her live for the first time and she is so so beautiful! She seemed a little slow and tentative when the program started, especially setting up for the triple axel. She landed a beauty during the warm up. Shame it didn't happen here.

3) Ashley: wonderful wonderful skate. Full of oomph and fun. The triple triple seemed a little borderline to me and her edge quality/ skating skills didn't seem that great during the step sequence but overall wonderful job. Sold the heck out of it.

4) gracie: another wonderful skate. Glad to see American girls bringing it. She seemed tentative to me though. Very focused and not performing much in the beginning. The 3-3 wasn't perfect and im not a fan of the arm flailing in the step sequence but overall very very good skate from her. Even considering home inflation I would lower those PCS by about about 2 points and have her at 74 (with added home inflation).

The rest to come after Free Dance!

Just like Salt Lake City 2002 where Irina receives 5.6 after a clean short program, and a totally cheated event for the pairs.

If you remember well, the new scoring system was created in response to that Olympic scandal.

I'm so happy for my faves to skate fantastic short programms!!

ANNA!!!!!! I've been waiting since freaking Moldovian Cup to see her finally skate whose two gorgous programms cleanly!

Rika!!!! Clean short and intense performance :luv17: Loved her grit the first time I saw her and loved it tonight!

Ashley!!!!!! OMG OMG OMG :dance2:
now don't screw this up in the long! Keep in mind: you're still the underdog going into the free!

Mirai!!! So glad she did so well! LOVE that programm

Zijun!!!!!!!! Beautiful! Simply stunning!

Now to what I didn't love so much .... the scoring ...

1. Gracie - totally overscored. Anna had way better performance, interpretation and execution than gracie. SS and Choreo are both about the same. Anna should have led in PCS.

2. Rika - a little underscored. should've gotten 70, especially lowballed in PCS

3. Zijun - underscored. Should be a little behind Rika. Zijun had 37!!! points in technical and only 28 in PCs :noshake: Her SS are on par with Elena, Evgenia and Rika. That was no 28pcs skate. At least give her 30!

4. The crowd. I'm sorry, but they seemed really reserved. Only cheering for the americans and politely clapping for even wonderful and intense performances of Anna, Elena and Rika. I mean, had that worlds been in Japan or Spain, people would have been on their feet when Anna entered that last spin. Instead, nobody in the first row even looked like they were enjoying the performance :rolleye:

I was at the event. I definitely can't speak for everyone but people did stand up for Anna. A lot of people were pleasantly surprised by her skate. You have to realize that hers was the last skate and a lot of people started to leave in order to avoid long lines.

I appreciate that they gave a standing O to Zijun and engaged in Julian's score! But on video it was quite obvious how reserved they were for Rika, Anna and Elena, who went out in full performance mode... Just watch the last 10 s of any video of Anna's great performance, and you'll see the audience being as unimpressed as Anna when she saw her score :p

So I was at the Ladies SP in Loge 10 so I had a good view. Although I'll post a much more detailed post later on, I just wanted to post that my favorite performances were Anna Pogorilaya's and Rika Hongo's. Both were extremely powerful, and as for Anna, dramatic.

I was disappointed by Evgenia's and Satoko's skating live. Eugenia has beautiful arms, but her ice coverage and speed were not that great surprisingly. Satoko was solid, but her jumps do look much smaller than others live.

Gold had a good performance, but her PCS is outrageous. IMO, Anna skated way better artistically with better arm movements and dramatic accentuating. Gold landed her jumps (the combo was scratchy), but really didn't capture my attention due to her airplane arms.

Wagner was great too. Her facial expressions were very, very clear live. But the music was just not my taste.

If you guys are curious about anything else specifically, let me know. I'll be happy to answer. Excited got the Mens FS and Ladies FS!!!!

It's always been this way. In the 6.0 system the early skaters in the final group were never given the scores they deserved no matter how they skated because they needed to leave room for the final skaters. But there is no reason to do it in this system which is much more flexible and can move skaters up or down much easier then 6.0.

Why do they need to leave room? I've never understood that. Just apply points as needed and correctly.

Well, maybe the higher seats that were not caught on camera were more enthuisiastic :cheer: But in this video (starting at 3.17) the claps ended even before Anna had finished bowing and noone stood up, only polite applause ...

Personally I find it hard to get into Anna's programs. I feel the same about Gracie but she was skating at home so the enthusiasm is understandable. It looked like people went wild for Mirai most of all, which was great to see.

Evgenia Medvedeva

There is so much to like about this lovely skater who is my pick to win the event. She is fast as can be and light and lovely to watch. Today however, was not her day. I love her choice of music but she also was far less "Lifted" in her delivery today. Lots of focus on the ice instead of her usual delivery to judges and the audience. This was actually the first time I had Anna ahead of Med. Looking for her to be strong in the Free Skate but, it will be tough for her to overtake Gracie as Gracie is usually stronger in the free. Best of luck to everyone and thank you for a great afternoon of skating.

Who is Roma Hongo?

Even TAT noted that the crowd seems to mostly support US and JP skaters.

I hope this isn't true. I would have been screaming my head off for Anna who, was the Misha Ge of the Ladies event. Meaning, she was shockingly good and a completely pleasant surprise.

Can we not go here?

Just replying to the "Fill in the blanks" post. I was trying to be sarcastic to say what you did about do we really need to keep harping on overscoring to the point of comparing overscored events?
I've had several posts to ask why the judges have to hold back for the later skaters. This seems to add to the problem of overscoring and I have never understood it.
