2017-18 State of Russian Ladies skating

I was planning to rest from figure skating since only a week later will be the next JGP stage. But suddenly remembered about Lombardia Trophy at the next week with Alina, Wakaba, Liza and Carolina.

Oh, figure skating, please give me a break. :sad4:

Yelim Kim actually looks very slow and cautious to me..... her pcs might be lower and she may miss the podium to the 2 Russians and....well, who else is competing?

Yeah her PCS will be lower, but her TES could be really high. And she won't miss a 3-spot-podium to 2 other skaters :p None of the other ones competing are on the same level technically, so as long as she lands stuff, Yelim has a really good shot at a medal.

She has good shot bur besides Russian there still will be Riko Takino

Goncharenko - Radio and Proklova, Buyanova - Sotnikova, Tsareva - Pogorilaya. Where is their next generation? :disapp:

You forgot about Sergei Davydov. He trains in CSKA now. Many of his students occupy high places on the Nationals(younger age). I think Goncharenko no longer trains young children. Buyanova too. Tsareva isn't so successful in coaching except Pogorilaya. But she has 11yo girl Maya Hromyh who took 3rd place on the Nationals(younger age)-2017.

I don't see Yelim not medaling, she was super strong in her first competitions. There are also Japan's Riko Takino; bronze medalist from Brisbane and USA Tessa Hong (talented but inconsistent).

Yeah, but his skaters have an average level. Mitrofanova (before moving to Eteri), ABBA girl, Tarusina. Who else? And all of these girls have low PCS and strange jumping technique with turns before the jumps.

Thank you. Impressive list! I guess it's not so hopeless as I thought. :) Yana is very cute and talented kid.
 
I keep thinking that Tarakanova's "sarabande's suite" program would have been perfect for evgenia. The music is amazing, it builds, and the conclusion is powerful. Perfect for an Olympic season. It's different music than what evgenia usually uses.

Thoughts?

i don't think so.. they are too different imo. :scratch2:
Evgenia is ephemeral, light, gentle and elegant with graceful and grateful long lines.
Anastasia is totally different soooo wild with speed and passion.

I think evgenia could pull it off. She is too talented to be skating to the same style year after year.
 
It'll be interesting to see how evgenia is scored this season. I'm betting that she'll break more of her own records. But at the same time, well, ok look, the whole figure skating community is divided on her programs. Love or hate it. So, out of the 9 or so judges that'll be scoring her, can every single one of them think that her programs are worth 9s and 10s? That's impossible, right? Not all of them can love it. Are they gonna judge based on her reputation? Will there be block judging?

Anna seems ready to go and optimistic! Yay!

Would not have picked Swan Lake for Anna. She seems like she's too earthy and "heavy," not weight-wise, but her skating has this heavy quality to it, as opposed to lightness and ethereal-ness and grace I associate with Swan Lake. If they wanted wanted classical and Russian, I would've avoided Tchaikovsky ballets altogether and gone with Rachmaninoff. The heft and drama of that music would suit Anna better, IMO.

That said, I'm excited to see Anna's take on Swan Lake. I LOVE CLASSICAL WARHORSES, OKAY????
 
The figure skating community is always divided on everything. Why should we care specifically about Medvedeva's scores?

Her SP is a masterpiece. I would agree with some other poster here: "she doesn't feel the music - she is the music". If she performs it clean she can break her SP record because tech wise it is the same but artistry wise it is better than the program from the last season so that the second mark should be higher.

Her LP is different. I don't have a firm opinion yet. May be because she could not skate it to the full potential yet. But if she manages to master it and skates it clean, yes, she should beat her own record. Because there are no obvious reasons to reduce her second mark and her tech content will be higher due to backloading.

Everyone is welcome to repeat what she has been doing and command high scores for that. We shall see this and next week if anyone can. And once again, any success brings the hate. Medvedeva is especially "lucky". Many people say: "I am not Medvedeva's hater, but..." The line was the signature of the comments last season. The reasons are obvious: the general reason that she is successful and dominant is obvious. But there are many other: for Koreans she is the leading lady from the country who "stole" OGM from their "queen". For Americans she broke the dream of Gracie Gold (and US as well) for WC gold when it was the most real in all these years (in fact Gracie did it herself) and she also skated to inappropriate music for Americans. Even for many Russians she is "evil" who "stole" Eteri's love and attention from Yulia. Yes, there are a lot of agressive Yulia's fans who write nasty comments about Medvedeva.

After Gracie's failure no one from the critics can offer any sound alternative - in fact it did not exist last season. Hence, no one can point to a skater who "should" win over Medvedeva. Then the only line of complaints is to keep saying how grossly overscored she is with all her "numerous faults". But the judges have not been eager to jump on the bandwagon of these complaints recently. And this has nothing to do with block judging. Just for a change to assume - may be she is that good? There were no massive outcries for Yuzuru's hitting 330. Then I see no reasons for them after Medvedeva hit 230.
