2017-18 State of Russian Ladies skating

Loved Zagitova's SP for the first time. It has been growing on me all season, and I'm so glad she was able to perform it cleanly here! No, she isn't giving face during the whole program, but her movements are very expressive and suit the music quite well. She deserved to be in front of Evgenia who had a small mistake on the axel. Evgenia's skating also looked a bit more tentative here. It's harder to skate to slow music, you have to pour your soul into it, and I think Evgenia could not do that today. However, I'm not worried about her- I'm sure she will be better by the Olympics. I am sure that even losing the SP segment to Alina will motivate her more.

I think they are both favorites for Olympic Gold at this point. Alina has the superior technical content, and I just LOVE her spins and jumps, they are beautiful. Evgenia has the polish, grace, consistency and deserves higher PCS, but I don't think it is that big of a difference. Alina may not be as graceful, but she has a magnetic quality. I prefer Alina's SP, and her FS is charming, so she may have the edge on program appeal. I liked Evgenia's Anna Karenina FS and think it has great potential, but honestly haven't seen it enough times to decide which FS I prefer. It will really depend on the SP, who leads by what margin, and who gives the best FS performance of the night. I thought ladies would be so boring this Olympics, but I'm glad to be wrong.

Anyone know when the oly/worlds teams for Russia/Olympic athletes from Russia will be officially announced, I know most everything but men’s is quite obvious but I’m still semi excited to have one finally announced.

From Anna's recent competition video, I noticed she lost significant height in her jumps, vs. pre-injury. She still lands her jumps, but they don't look as secure as before. Kind of the same when I see Evgenia. Maybe it is just typical for a skater in the recovery stage or just recovered from injury.

Anna is in?!! :yahoo: Great that they have been flexible enough with the criteria to include her. It wasn't her fault that she lost a JGP season from being injured.

Healthy rivalries are great for sports (Nadal vs Federer, Javi vs Yuzu, ecc), but I hope the media remembers that these are 2 very young girls who train together and try not to turn this into a circus.

Yes you need good rivalries. I hope that both Alina and Zhenya stay on for the next quad like Yuna and Mao. That would be great to see.

I seriously doubt they will be relevant in 2 years (I mean in terms of their positions in the Russian and international competitive scene, rather than in terms of popularity and fandom). The next quad will be all about Sasha, Alena, Nastya, Anna, etc.

Mhm.... it is really hard to say. It's nearly impossible to predict which 3 ladies will be the main ones in the next quad, because there is just that much talent. Maybe some of those Junior girls will get trouble with puberty, maybe we will see 3As/quads really being more of a factor in coming years and some won't be able to keep up, maybe some won't be able to handle the pressure in seniors as well, and then sadly there are always injuries. So although I'm quite optimistic about the current Russian Super Junior Squad & their senior prospects, never say never.
And then the current senior non-Evgenia/Alinas shouldn't be completely counted out either. Especially Polya, Masha & hopefully Anna :)

(If little Kosto doesn't become a World Champion one day though, I declare riot against the skating gods. Just saying  )

Gosh I'm so excited for jr. nationals!!!
Literally so many talents I'm excited to see: Alenka, Dasha, Sasha, Anya, Nastya Tarakanova, etc... and Liza and Sonya!

So, Moscow's part:

Trusova
Kostornaya
Tarakanova
Panenkova
Shcherbakova
Kurakova
Vasilieva
Gulyakova
Kanysheva
Sinitsyna
Kostyuk
Safonova

12 spots

St. Pete's:

Konstantinova
Gubanova
Samodurova
Nugumanova

And I guess Moroz and Fedichkina are the last two?

Just sensational field. :dbana:
