2017-2018 Programs by Discipline

Ugh. I get that Moulin Rouge is Ashley's signature program and all but...kinda lame if true (can't wait for the talking points about how there will be new choreography and transitions :sarcasm:). I think, despite all the swans, that I'd take her Black Swan program back over this if they had to do a repeat....

edited to add: I get using repeats, especially in an Olympic season. But it's the THREEPEATS that I just can't. with.

If it's true, then she's just joining a bunch of other top skaters in repeating one or both of their programs.

She has used Moulin Rouge for two seasons already though, while most repeat programs have only been used one other season. It would be a somewhat similar situation to Hanyu, who is reusing two programs, one of which he has already used for two seasons. And plenty of people expressed that they were more bothered by repeats if they were A: repeated more than once, or B: both programs were repeated. I'm not saying that to condemn Ashley at all (or Hanyu), but I think for a lot of people this isn't quite the same as all the skaters just repeating one program that hadn't been repeated before (which is what the majority of repeats are).

If the news is true, it's kind of disappointing given that Ashley's La La Land LP sounded so promising in Jackie Wong's "Making of" video!

I'm okay with Ashley repeating Moulin Rouge again. It's become her signature program and I can understand why she would want to showcase it at the Olympics since that's the only time more than a handful of Americans watch FS. If she can't make La La Land work, then it's better to jettison it and go back to a program she's comfortable with so that she can focus on her jumps and spins.

Do y'all think Ashley was all on board with making La La Land work, then heard about Hanyu's programs, and decided to do the same thing as him? :rolleye:

How disappointing if it's true (I'm going to assume it is - TSL is usually right when it comes to rumors regarding US skaters). Performance and interpretation are Ashley's major, major strengths over the rest of the field, but seeing her do the same programs again? It gets stale. I was surprised she was able to make Moulin Rouge so much better in 2015-2016 than it was the season prior, but there's really only so much you can pull out of a single character before it stops feeling special.

So Ash is repeating both Hip Hip and Moulin Rouge? So just repeating both her programs from 2015-2016?

Realising this even hits me again. I even don't know which truth makes me more disappointed: one more Moulin Rouge or her repeat of both like Hanyu...

in Ashley's interview segment, she made it clear she wants an Olympic medal and she doesn't want a repeat of U.S. Nationals 2014, so I'm guess that might have driven the decision.

So does this make two La La Land programs that have been abandoned? Hmm...

Yes! Let's blame Hanyu for everything from now on in this Olympic season. Hanyu is the only reason skaters repeat their programs. Hanyu is the reason the rules will be changed. Hanyu is the reason true skating fans can not enjoy real art of skating anymore.

Oh wait... let's dismiss skaters' effort to skate as clean as possible in the Olympic season when the whole world will see them.

I may need to change the bonus spot on my Bingo card. La La Land is disappointingly proving not to be as overused as initially thought.

Edit: I'll replace it with Moulin Rouge!

I'm already applauding Ashley's courage and conviction in repeating Moulin Rouge. I'll boldly go ahead and predict she's going to surprise me ... and very likely a lot of skeptical people .... with what nuances, refinements, new bits and transitions she'll be able to put in. Moulin Rouge is her signature program, and something about the drama inherent in it, coupled with the tender vulnerability in Nicole Kidman's singing, just works.

She's absolutely right to go with a known quantity, in order to concentrate her efforts on skating clean. She's entitled to choose programs that showcase her skating and interpretation talents best. As is every skater.

I admit to a couple minutes of disorientation when I first heard. :reye: Now I can only say, good for her:bow:; she knows her own mind and is going to make herself happy. I just recently read a quote from Carolina Kostner to the effect that everything changed for her when she stopped trying to make other people happy.
