2017-2018 Programs by Discipline

I do wonder if the people who complained all last season about Sam Smith and his voice and even thought it was a low brow or commercial choice will change their tune now that P/C are using Ed Sheeran. My comment is only about people who made such statements or inferred it.

I definitely won't. :) Perhaps Papadakis/Cizeron will help me like their SD in spite of Ed Sheeran (just like I liked Jason's program in spite of Sam Smith.)

I will say, I'm kind of disappointed that the top two teams have opted to use music by mostly white guys (Virtue and Moir does use Santana as part of their mix) for a Latin dance. It does make me appreciate Hubbell and Donahue's SD a bit more.

I can’t stand that guy’s voice...

At last year's Worlds, the judges awarded the first place and a new world record in the SD to V/M, who weren't using hip hop music for their hip hop program. The year before that, they awarded the first place (again at Worlds) to P/C, who weren't using a proper waltz for their waltz SD. I don't think the rules are changing to favour any team -- the judges already clearly couldn't care less about "flavour".

Did you read the ISU Additions to Music Rhythm Booklet? Hip Hop is something totally new to ice dance and they vaguely defined on purpose to allow more freedom because the ISU (as usual) really don't know what to do with it. 2 of their videos are no longer available but if they're saying jazz funk and new style Hip Hop like dancing to Rihanna's Take a Bow is valid then their Prince SD is just as valid.

Also Papadakis/Cizeron's issue was that the ISU specifically defined that Ravensburger waltz is in 3/4 time but they skated to music that was 6/8 time.

I'm not trying to knock on P/C here because generally I do like their skating but you are talking about totally different things here. If this Ed Sheeran music fits the rhythm requirements then it is "valid" by the rules ISU have defined for their skaters too even if it's not actual latin music.

Thank you for your insight and yes I remember P/C having to alter their added rhythm between Euros and Worlds. At the end of the day though to the layman audience I don't think there is much difference -- the only thing they see is that skaters are not actually using the appropriate music. It's also extra ~dramatic~ with latin rhythms because people see it as culturally insensitive...

At least there are lots of different versions of R&J.

I wonder how many of the Moulin Rouges feature Rrrrrrrrrrroxanne.

The music cuts are perfectly fine but I am disappointed with the program. The choreography doesn't reflect the fast and intense sections of the music well enough and there is a faux-dramatic quality to the program as a whole.

I present to you The Warhorse List for the 2017-2018 Season featuring an awful amount of Moulin Rouge and La La Land.

Feel free to correct it if you see any mistakes.

What a great chart. Well, not great for skating.. you know what I mean;)

Alexa and Chris Knierim have returned to their "Ghost" LP; it may say "Unchained Melody", but it's the Ghost version. Another addition!

skating is very elegant but music cuts are all over the place... ugh... another classical masterpiece of music murdered by music cutters
Agreed.
The music cuts are perfectly fine
The repetition that got squeezed in from 1:45 to 1:53 is just cringeworthy for whoever knows what it's supposed to sound like. It's one thing to have more or less fitting cuts between different chunks of music, but here they needed 8 seconds and they took the lazy approach which just sounds wrong instead of working "with" and/or "around" the music.

well the music cuts are not fine and i can elaborate on this :

1) in the slow initial section, there is an instance of repeating a music phrase which destroys the balance and harmonic progression of the music...

I could live with that faux-pas but then it gets worse

2) in the fast section : they have removed many bars of the music so the flurry of 16th notes if they may look seamless to someone who doesn't understand music deeply, no longer carry any significance and meaning... we are left with beats and notes that do not connect to one another in a meaningful way. this happens several times in the fast section...

now I agree with you with the faux-dramatic quality of the program as in the fast section, they do a stationary lift and a spin.... both with slow revolutions... it's unfortunate that there are no real uses of the fast sections for fast twizzles or steps...

3) the return to the original slow section may be fine for a casual listener of music but is quite offensive for someone versed in classical music... the moonlight sonata is well-known for its progression into a passionate climax... the return to the slow and soft section ruins the intense build-up meant by the composer...

Fair enough, choreographers and skaters may be able to create arrangements that suit their needs but this is a butchery of a gorgeous musical piece....

one can use this music quite well.. .it's been done before but this time, the cuts are failing the music... and if some skating fans may not care, some skating fans like myself, and we are many, are trained musicians and love the sport because of its use of music... and in this case... it's a big failure.

i had not seen your post so thanks for giving the exact timing. that repetition is so annoying...

I only hope a French person isn't responsible for this. [emoji27]

it probably is... either from France or Montreal... i feel like going to Gadbois tomorrow and telling them.... mais qu'avez-vous fait???? I am not sure Hugo can survive this so maybe you shouldn't tell him about it...

You should do it! I mean, they let in another guy to watch them skate so why not you with your musical training? But maybe you should wait for them to return from France so you could explain it to them directly.

As for the reference to those who had the flavour of the Ravensburger Waltz in 2015-2016 that was most definitely Weaver/Poje. That they did not have their levels sorted out is their fault, but none can deny they had the flavour - costuming, music, and all.
