Well it's kind of ironic that they turned to Igor to save them from the mess Kustarova seemed to be creating, then came back from Igor in even more of a mess, and Kustarova had to come to the rescue to sort out the mess. As I remember, if Elena hadn't dropped her bracelet, they'd have been going to Euros, so it was a pretty good turnaround by the end of the season.
Oh how I wish they'd never gone to Igor, what a mistake that was.

The problem is that everything is rushed. I don't see how a team is going to get better with a month with another coach. This needs time and planning. And not even Kustarova seemed to be doing that much good for them the season before. To be honest, I don't really know what's missing in all of this.

IZ were 6 months with Igor. Honestly, a coaching change is always a risk. Sometimes it works brilliantly, sometimes it doesn't. I think what they need the most are good program choices and being injury free, but mostly good programs.

And even then it felt rushed, there wasn't much work done that adapted to their style, or to further improve it. Also, there was hype for new lifts that we never saw. For six months of work, it really did feel like just one, to be honest.

I/z work with Igor was seemingly over before the gp even began! I was just reading 2016-2017 thread and there was almost never any real or formal switching to him and even if there was it was over before gp even started! No one gave it the appropriate amount of time or development.

While I do see now that transfering to Shpilband was a bad idea, I think that coming back to A&K is even worse idea for Elena and Ruslan. If what people say is true (which I now close to believing) the fundamental 'teacher/coach-student' relationships in that collaboration do not work how they should. It's good to be a 'family' but coach and student should not be equal in the training and creating programs process. Smack me if you want, but I think that Morozov was right coach for Elena. Not so sure the same thing goes for Kustarova.

Unfortunately, they don`t have any other choice. There is nobody they could switch to in Russia and apparently they don`t have the money to go abroad. I realize that Kustarova and Alekseeva have their flaws as coaches, but they managed to get them in good enough shape at Nats to be at least competitive for the third spot, which didn`t look like to be possible back in October. I don`t consider the months IZ spent in Novi as a complete waste, since Shpilband did change few of their elements to make it easier for them like their twizzles or the Swan lift, but it didn`t bring them the big breakthrough they needed.

Based on their interviews, Igor gave them very little time, most of their work was done with Bourzat. Also injuries and illnesses cut into actual useful time with him, then the rug was pulled, period.

Actually, to change these 2 things you don't need a months, it's a very simple changes. So I think it WAS a waste. It definitely costed them more than they received in return. And it's a shame, I really was very excited about this collaboration and was the first supporter of it.

To be honest I/Z and S/K and their troubles now shows why I/K were never a consistent or contending team before they broke up regardless of finally putting it together in Sochi. Nikita is a drama queen and is out of control on and off the ice and Elena's had issues with her work ethic in the past and it showed again last season when she was out of competition shape. Even if they stayed together they would probably still be losing not just to the Shibs but W/P and C/B.

I do agree.
And IMO Kustarova has been working a lot on teaching her junior proper technic now, considering how her juniors skated last season.
She still has work to do, but she has learned a lot working with Ruslena, and it's already showing in her school. IMO of course.
I wish she could reach for outside technicians and help to package her skaters, because that's really what she's lacking. But on the whole, fixing Ruslena last season in such a short period is to be commanded.

Talk about being thrown under a bus. Its no wonder their ice dancers are nervous, stiff wrecks. Unless of course you've been blessed by Tarasova and of the right parentage. This season promises to be really exciting for all the wrong reasons.
