2017 World Ladies FS

Was away from the internet but wow wow wow.

Karen - who would've thought Karen is the girl who helps US keep the 3 spots and gets a 4th! So happy for her, bringing it when it counted the most for her! Awesome, hope she keeps skating clean.

Anna - not my favourite in general, but it was devastating seeing her so sad. Such a good season for her and then this. Hope she recovers from this.

Evgenia - ah, this world record. But I have warmed up to her so much since last worlds, when I was kinda salty about her WR. Good for her, such consistency and wonderful skating.

Kaetlyn and Gabby also just amazing! So happy for them.

I think maybe Ashley wasn't motivated this season. The season after winning the elusive World medal and before the Olympics...if she was younger she would've had more of a fire under her butt this season, but it's clear that her age is showing in her jumps and spins. She's never had solid, instinctive jump technique to rely on (a la Carolina or Yuna) to make those jumps work for her, to make them super impressive even when she's well-trained. And we see the spins of lots of skaters get worse as they age, partially due to pain. I understand that she didn't want to burn herself out this season, but she was maybe too conservative, and it showed. Her programs didn't help matters. We will see what she does next season.

I might get flayed on here for suggesting this, but she might be better off if she skips the GP series, unless she really gets back to the form she was in last season. Not making the GPF next season won't do her any favors, and neither will USFS if Karen and Gracie step it up.

Karen needs to win a GP medal or two next season or this 4th place finish is meaningless.

Mariah was too nervous. :confused2: But she has the experience and with some more time with Raf, we'll see what she's capable of next season.

I didn't think Gabby and Katelyn would stand up to the pressure. I'm so thrilled for them!

Anna   . I wonder if we will ever see her at Worlds again. She got lucky last season, in a way - if Liza T. had been a little bit better or if Yulia had made a mini-comeback then RusFed would've happily kept Anna at home - but they didn't have anyone better. So they sent her and she wowed. And all season she's been building herself up as their solid #2, only to completely blow it in her last program of the season. The total opposite of last season, in a bad way. I hope they don't dump her.

Evgenia was Evgenia. There's nothing else to be said, really.

Mai might just snag an Olympic spot last season, if she shows some consistency. Get her better programs, JSF!

I guess we were due for a bad Worlds in ladies after how wonderfully almost everyone skated last year.

Wow, really? She just - almost single-handedly saved 3 spots for the US, and did so after facing the pressure of Ashley and Mariah skating subpar. It's because of her that the US has 3 spots -- and 4th means they COMFORTABLY had 3 spots, after all's said and done -- it certainly isn't MEANINGLESS.

Chen might or might not win a GP medal next season, but there's no denying the importance of what she pulled off today and trivializing it is pretty unfair... let's give the ice a moment to dry before we cut into it, okay? ;)

Gabby needs a new choreographer now that she's a World medalist. Lori Nichol is great, but she's not the right choreographer for Gabby. Send her to Shae-Lynne Bourne for some grown-up lady sexy choreography. I could totally see her rocking something like Ashley's Hip Hip Chin Chin from last season.

(I actually think all ladies over 18 who are not natural "artistes" should get choreo from Shae-Lynne.)

It's odd. In both JW and World's the Russians had similar results. 1st in both. The 2nd was inconsistent but enough to salvage slots. And the heavy silver favorite bombs. How did that happen twice?

Yes since Gracie is sure likely to miracelously turn into this consistent skater she wasnt even in her prime from 2014-2016, after her worst season ever and turning into a massive headcase. Not impossible of course, but I tend to deal more in realism.

Gracie Gold is the Donald Trump of figure skating. Love her or hate her, you just can't look away. The girl is compelling.

It was nice for those who care that the Americans got the third spot.

I only watched the final flight, and good for Karen, the Canadians, and Evgenia. It wasn't the greatest competition I've ever seen, but they did reasonably well.

The memory that will stick with me the longest is poor Anna. I'm not a particular fan, but you'd have to be made of stone not to be heartbroken for her.

None from me. Hopefully for a long time to come. While the Wagner-Gold rivalry was nice, it would also be nice to finally have a truly stable U.S #1 again, which they havent had since Michelle Kwan really.

Not exactly fair to Ashley... who has had a slew of GP/GPF medals - 5 grand prix golds, a Four Continents gold, a GPF silver/2 bronzes, and a World silver.

But yes, Karen is the new US #1 (well, she was after Nationals too) but she cemented it today.

Yeah, she absolutely slayed.... she got some help from the tech specialist in the SP and definitely got a ton of US-champion-bonus PCS in the FS (I mean, a fall and a stepout and she clears her PCS PB by about 4 points?!), but she came out swinging in the FS, and skated well. And with the bad skates by Pogo and Sotskova, managed to maintain 3 spots with Ashley.

All those Chen naysayers are quietly fuming/pouting, along with the Canadian skater haters.

I think Anna was putting alot of pressure on herself to skate great in order to pass one or both of Osmond and Daleman. I could be wrong, but I mentioned this earlier today just before the womens long programs began, that I have a hunch it was a huge difference maker to Anna's chances at the Russian Olympic team whether she medaled at the WC for a 2nd straight year or not. I think skating pretty well in the short and being 4th, even behind someone who did only a triple toe-triple toe (Daleman) set a bit of panic in, and was part of her implosion today. And with Miyahara out it would be even more expected (the 2nd medal that is) by the Russians. I wont say she is off the team or anything, even after today, but boy she hasnt helped her chances of making the super deep Russian Oly team with their new age eligibles next year at all. Especialy factoring in she has never been a favorite of the Russian fed. to begin with. Zagitova's spot is even more secure barring a major growth spurt IMO, I suspect the Russian fed. have her firmly over Anna now.

Mai Mihara, with the second highest TES in the competition. It's so sad that Japan's nationals are going to be a bloodbath next season because someone will lose out on going to the Olympics out of Satoko, Mai, Marin and Wakaba.

Also, this forum is absolutely craptastically slow right now... it'll be even more impossible tomorrow for men's free.

The fact that Mao isn't even listed... :sad21:

If Aliisa C can have a year like she did in 2011 when she won the GPF after a less then stellar 2009-2010 season when she bombed Nationals and finished 10th after winning the year before then there is no reason that Gracie who is a superior jumper can't do the same. Even Kostner learned in her later years how to compete. And Gracie is still the most talented US lady who can make the podium. Ashley seems maxed out technically and her spins and other things are getting worse.

Sorry...maybe I was a little harsh. FWIW, I was solidly on the side of send-Karen-to-Worlds, and I'm a huge fan of her skating, and very impressed with her performances at Worlds. She did amazing, and keeping three spots for the US isn't meaningless.

I meant "meaningless" in the context of her career trajectory as a whole, her future in the sport from an international perspective. International judges clearly want to reward her, and she can now be US #1, but it won't happen unless she starts delivering on the GP. Judges like consistency among the ladies.

I cried like a baby for Anna, then went in Heaven with both Gabby and Kaetlyn, and of course Evgenia. There were 3 great programs for the world podium. What a treat, what an unexpected awesome result.
Congratulation to all the skaters! Karen had a very good skating but some small melt down in the end. She did great for US, but judges should get some primes as part of the deal was done when they propped Ashley through huge PCS. Had Ashely placed further back...
Still happy US has 3 spots, S Korea, as the host country really deserves 2 spots.
Anna, is a gorgeous skater and this is what we shall remember.
Big bravo to Evgenya, Kaetlyn and Gabby!

Oh yes I dont dispute Ashley did extremely well but she couldnt ever be a comfortable #1 since Gold so often still beat her, probably always had the more scoring potential (but the weaker consistency and competitor), and was fairly visibly preferred by the USFSA to Wagner too. Which made for an exciting rivalry which was enjoyable, but it would also be nice to see more of a firm U.S #1 for awhile which Wagner wasnt able to be due to Gold, and Gold wasnt able to ever be either because of Wagner, even if ultimately Wagner's final achievements will likely soundly trump Gold for good due to her world medal and numerous GPF medals.

My trip to helsinki arena changed to lay down in fever under the blanket in couch.
But after all it was good competition.
Evgenia did just what i expected second cold medal.
But kaetlyn and Gabrielle yes i am happy for them.
And Mai what a skate and good placement.
Anna can not find words i feel so sad for her.
Mayby next year  for Anna

And tomorrow lest see if Javi takes third cold..............

Oh, please don't let Javi take a cold tomorrow! The day after would be soon enough ...

SCNR

AMAZING outcome for Canada!!! 3 spots so Alaine can go to the Olympics next year and 2 girls on the podium! So awesome!

Sad for Anna and Ashley though. And Japan's 3rd spot.

When there were 6 ladies left and I had not the list I was thinking who was thr sixthone, I had to wait until Introduction to remember Sotskova. And me too, I had a moment I was thinking only two points for Russia. I missed Elena.

Just thinking about it, Evgenia is 17, had to defend her title and then went into this competition and won it without any doubt. This girl is a true champion, like her skating or not. :clapper:

Anna can claw her way back to the top. You look at her and you know she's hungry. I said before she is the most striking Russian girl in the damn line up. She will be fine because the other chicks aren't better than her. Who will take the third spot? Elena? Liza? Maria? None of them are better than her. She controls her own destiny.

If she doesn't make it, it is because she can't jump anymore. In that case, it is fair she doesn't go. I am not worried about Russian politics putting young Anna out in the snow field in Siberia over this.
