Just looked at the protocols. It's clear that Jin Boyang was held down in GOEs.

When is he not? :(

I just don't get why his jumps deserve the same or lower GOEs as Shoma's. Yuzuru I can see having better GOEs, but Shoma? Javier? Even Nathan with his lack of flow?

Now that the field is clearing up, he can cease the open top spot with a better LP next season. Just... I think they already have plans for Nathan.

The -/+ 5 GOE can be a game changer or reinforces the quadfest. We'll see. I do think they should raise the PCS factor to 2.4 meaning a perfect score is 120 which would be on par with what the technical content will be in the coming cycle. As broken as PCS score is, it still separates jumpers from skaters or at least in theory it does.

I'm extremely sceptical.

The +/- 5 GOE makes no difference if they are still going to be awarding +3/+4 to shoddily landed jumps and the 2.4 PCS factor also makes no difference if they are awarding 9.25s to skaters who have empty programs. As I said, any changes to COP will not make any difference if the judges aren't going to change what they are rewarding.

I thought I was the only one who thought this! Boyang's quad Lutz...I don't understand why that jump isn't +3 GOE. He flies on that thing, it looks incredible. Are they really gonna penalize him for not having enough transitions into the hardest freaking jump in the sport that only like 2 people in the world are doing?

Well they can put a cap of maximum number of quads, tinker with what should/should not be in program. I’m concerned about increasing injuries to young bodies, not just ugly landings.

so because the jump is hard, even with long set up it still should get +3 GOE? I don't get this logic.

I think I have a little more faith in ISU that they will self correct the way they want the sport to evolve. Hanyu received 17 points in GOE with a few passes maxed. Nathan received 12 points in GOE with an average of 1.5 GOE or so each. That's not an insignificant spread of GOE. If increased, it can easily account for one quad if not more. Also, Hanyu and Fernandez had a 9-10 point advantage in PCS at 2.0, at 2.4 that can increase to 12-14 points which is the value of another quad. Judges choose to reward how they want to reward but I do see them leaning towards not going all out for a quad-filled empty programs. And as tech content goes up, PCS have no more room to grow so I do see the need for the ISU to change the factoring not just in men but across all discipline. In addition, there's always the worry that the sport is going to become too athletic with every olympic cycle, from the elimination of school figures to the triple jump evolution in ladies of the 90s to the introduction of IJS, yet we're all still here debating about and loving the sport for its blend of artistry and athleticism so I'm hopeful it will continue.

Exactly the jump has a higher base value that is it reward for being harder. There is a reason the transition is left out to achieve the jump.

Boyang does it with proper technique and has excellent height and distance. It's a +3. One bullet point being discarded in favour of other, equally important, if not more important, catergories shouldn't be a big deal.

Shoma jumps are so rocky. His free leg should be extended up higher when landing because when he puts it back down on the ice it looks suspiciously like he's using it to mask the fact he's saving the landing. Also just rewatched the fs and his quad loop at the start was definately 0.25 or more of a rotation under. I dont know how the controller didnt see that but i guess japan having 1-2 will bring in a lot more revenue to ISU than giving it to a skater from a country with hardly any revenue

Uno's 4Lo was << and 4F was <
Javi was robbed for sure.

I disagree on some of your points. I think that he is shorter and his leg will be closer to the ground. But I also think that he is always looking to transition so that has nothing to do with the landing. But I do think that his jumps could be much better. But he knows that. That is why he comes to USA when he can to jump school. I hope he spends more of the off season there.

Winter Olympics have fewer events than summer, so they have a Medal Celebration every evening at Medals Plaza where all the athletes in every discipline who won that day receive their medals. Apparently, it's tradition and they do not do that for summer because there are many more disciplines/events/competitions.

The tiger is given now, whereas flowers have been given before. I understand that it was decided that the flowers were unsustainable which is why the Rio athletes received the small trophy/medal-holder instead of flowers. At least the tiger will last much longer than flowers. :)

I think the flower/plushie ceremony tradition for figure skating started at Sochi in 2014. Before that, the winners received their medals in a ceremony at the rink in front of the audience that had just witnessed their accomplishments. (I don't know what happened back in the day when figure skating events were held outdoors.) I'm not sure why there is a logistics issue with awarding the medals at the rink now when there apparently was not one at Olympic games prior to Sochi.

but that't not what the rule book say. You have to do more than just do the jump with a proper technique to get +3.
