2018 Olympic Figure Skating Mens SP

What are those earphones for? Is there a translator translating the questions into the earphones?
Apparently yes. They were being used for interpretation of some sort.

Shoma usually uses big headphones, so the earphones where you insert your lobe into the curve was probably new to him.

I overslept his skate (not difficult considering that it took place just after 2AM here) :slink: but yeah little bit sad about him as he's among my few favourite skaters from early groups. One could hope almost till the end considering that there was Kolyada waiting after all just in case of ultimate bombing that he's capable of. But than this is great feat just to make it there and give admirable skate on top of it beating 5 other men for someone who represents ... Malaysia, country that is right on equator, and who's not USA born import with foreign passport.

I feel for Chen even though he's not my favourite, too much hype & buzz did him in. 17th place and 20+ behind podium area ... ouch. I am genuinely gutted for Kolyada.

Proud of Javier, he put himself in contention for Olympic medal now  The most enjoyable skate of today as well for me. Jin also slayed  I'd be delighted with whoever of these two with a medal but my ultimate wish is OGM for Fernandez.

Positively shocked by Brezina  Who would have thought? But I am going to be nervous before LP as this is Brezina after all.

I dozed off and missed Brezina (and Cha) - have to look them up later on Eurosport Player.

Agree with your comments, particularly as I enjoyed watching Julian so much at the Nebelhorn Trophy and I LOVE his LP even more than his SP.

oh wow aliev so happy for him! he gets so much hate on various russian boards for 'always falling' and being inconsistent.... good for him, great skate. super effortless combo.

patrick - massive improvement over that team event sp. stupid axel, arrrrgh. still hoping for another medal for him here... would have thrown more pcs at him.

kolyada - WHY is this man's pcs only 1pt-sth behind patrick's? why?

pressure got the best of nathan...

shoma - look, i love his artistry and prefer him to yuzuru. but he doesn't have a landing that's NOT borderline foot down. i mean..? how do these jumps get positive goe?

boyang - great performance. i wish he wasn't so stiff in the back though. not sure he should be behind shoma here...

Okay. Earlier in the evening NBC commenters were saying that Shoma was under the radar. Now they're saying that about Javi. What universe are they living in that either of those two would be considered under the radar? I've just run out of evens to can't.

Well everyone else is under the radar when you're just so fixated on Nathan and tout him as the most likely ''Olympic Gold Medallist'' in Pyeong Chang.

Adam's performance is not unsimilar to Ashley's in similar SPs: a whole lot of "sass" and winking at the audience and judges, not much substance. I don't think it deserves that much more than say, Keegan's. Not in PE, certainly not in IN.

Well, actually, when I watch him skate I mostly feel like I am being hit on by a creep, because his performance is borderline lewd. And I know he is living his Olympic moment and probably he is getting a lot of positive feedback and fan adoration but I find he's becoming a bit much even in the kiss and cry.

I get what you mean. Love that word 'lewd'. He didn't used to skate like that, I remember when he looked all boyish with a mop of curly hair. Despite that, he skated with true maturity. Much as I still admire him, I preferred his style then.

Really? I thought the Russian prince of falling would be Kolyada.

This Olympic SP would be his third straight clean performance counting from European SP and FS.

I think Aliev has the 'Boyang curve'. He peaks towards the end of the season.

I'm starting to really like Boyang, He's improving

This SP is pretty well interpreted and performed

I might root for him to win Worlds :agree:

Some of the replies be like
"LOL, you can go back to doing vlogs, you're a failure" 😡😡😡😡😡
Like don't they know he received next to nothing of any support from his country? He had to use socmed to finance his trainings. I feel like grabbing those trolls by heir throats

Those who can't do, judge. It must make them feel so darn superior. Even someone as successful as Patrick Chan got racist criticism from some Canadians and I wanted to ask the condemners if they had ever caused the Canadian flag to be raised and the Canadian anthem played at an international event.

I know some people hate it, but I just adored all the fist-pumping, particularly in the final group. It always amuses me! :cool2:

Is anyone getting a Sotnikova vibe in Aliev?

Both European silver medalists coming in the Games and both left out of the team event, both relatively unknown outside FS world, both have huge potential technical arsenal, both against a reigning Olympic champion. :slink:

Hanyu needs to give it his absolute all to ensure this doesn't happen.

Back then he was called Angel Boy but he decided to cut the curly locks and have a complete image change. Now it's about sass.

I'm so, so proud of Brendan. His practice reports this morning didn't look good and I was so nervous for him. And then he came out and laid down that! Wonderful.

Hanyu. What can I say? To come back from that injury, after not having skated competitively since October, and to lay down that. Unbelievable.

As to Nathan. This is why you shouldn't pile so much hype and expectation on a young guy who's still rising. The Olympics are a different beast entirely, and if you're not on guard, everything changes when you skate across those five rings. I hope Nathan isn't beating himself up too severely for it. Olympic pressure has brought down many skaters before and will do so again.

And last, I'd just like to say: four skaters over 100. Nearly five. That's outstanding.

When Brendan landed his jumps, I was thinking would karne's boss fire her for screaming in the office?

Aliev achieved PCS 42 in SP translates to 84 in FS while Hanyu and Javier both can achieve 97 on PCS in FS. So the modus operandi would not work for the OGM

However, (insert lightning and thunder) as for the OBM …..

Sass but no substance. Excellent description. At least he delivered under pressure though. I think his score was about right. If anything, Chen was overscored. He shouldn't have even advanced to the FS.

I rewatched nathan's performance after a few hours. except for the jumps ironically it wasn't that bad or at least it was not as bad as I thought when i first watched it. i am not sure if he got underrotation calls, but if he had done the combo he woudl be in a similar position as Koldoya which isn't totally disastorous.

figure skating is an unforgiving sport because there is only one shot. Very few olympians do it like simone biles on the first try or even like Michael Phelps although he did not win anything his first olympics. Lindsay Vonn, Bodie Miller, Mikaeka Shiffrin, Apolo Ono all did not live up to the hype but they had multiple chances for gold over multiple olympics so if they choked one day they had another chance for redemption. and many of those athletes had one gold out of like 10 chances (or even medal).

I also think Hanyu skates with more perspective than an 18 year old kid from let's face it American suburbia. Having the earthquake happen in his hometown and the tsunami gave him perspective that him not winning the gold medal isn't that big a deal in the grand scheme of life. and javi seems like he would be thrilled winning a medal

i am struck too by how many past great olympians even gold medalists live very ordinary lives- Sarah Hughs is at penn law school, Even works in real estate, Sasha Cohen works at a bank. Very few skaters really end up using any medal for a career and if you have the personality like Jonny you don't even need the medal. Nathan never struck me like someone like Scott or Jonny who are super into the sport for his whole life.

Oh my god, I am SO DOWN for Sotnikova Aliev!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

When Brendan landed his jumps, I was thinking would karne's boss fire her for screaming in the office?

karne had both hands over her mouth to a) avoid her heart escaping by jumping through it in nerves and b) stop any giveaway sounds from escaping. It worked.
