2018 Olympic Figure Skating Team Event Day 2

Because they want you to get mingled or you're very popular or you have secrete recipes that everyone covet? Fluffy friends are always comfy and cute though. :)

Mingled is too close to mangled for my linking :suspicious:

I told everyone "Friday not Saturday" and everyone apparently heard "Saturday is great for me.." I hope they all catch my ebola. And I'm 100% serious. In fact I'm going to sip out of all their straws and make them all sick (of course this might cause me to be drunk because I don't drink anymore and have zero alcohol tolerance anymore). So, yes.. If I do post later it might be drunken posting. CONSIDER YOURSELF WARNED. I haven't been drunk in... 24 years.

To ANYANKA (I'm not doing the multiple quoting thing).. I think D/R are hedging their bets and think that the most likely gold in the team. They are going to be really hard pressed to take down T/M, S/M and S/H (amongst others) to even get bronze. I think this is a good idea. I'm a bit sad for S/B. I was hoping they'd get the call.

So. Team Canada has confirmed D/R for team pairs FS. They are going all-in on that team gold medal then. Does that mean they don't mind exhausting themselves for the individual event? SK/K are doing it for the USA and so are other pairs but they're the only entries for their countries and have no choice.

Thoughts?

I've expressed a similar concern about the fatigue part on T/M's possible participation in FS. That also goes the same to D/R. The Team Event is fun to watch, but requires a great deal of training time and energy from the participants if they aim for both a Team and Individual medal.

Good job it's the w/e!!! I can handle watching at night... as long as I don't have to get to work later on.

I hope Katia & Dima still have their Europeans feeling in them, when they were totally on fire in the FD. The Shibs weren't all what they used to be this season, B/S could really challenge them. Same goes for C/L.

100 per cent behind Zhenya, but I'm also shouting for Kostner, ('cause I fance Italy in the final).

Great line up tonight!

Looking forward to the Ice Dance. So many of my favorites! Good luck to all!

Good Luck to the Ladies!

I think we are going to see some outstanding skating tonight, can't wait!

Canada could totally lock in the team gold medal if they leaned on Virtue and Moir to do both segments.

Before the comp started, I thought Canada would go all-in on the Team Event. In their last major event, D/R, Chan, V/M all walk away with Olympic gold? Plus both ladies?

Yeah, they should do it. Remember, none of those skaters are favorites to win their individual events - although I personally think V/M should be.

But, remember the whole passing the torch thing? What a way for the Canadian legends to go out.

Hey there! :)

I wondered that too. I'd also add Y/Z and J/C as spoilers to that mix, so it's a very crowded field. They can help keep Canada ahead of OAR in the pairs standing at least.

Doing some quick and subjective math in my head: We are up 4 on Russia and will probably, baring a fall or something, 6 ahead after dance. If Kaetlyn can come 2nd or 3rd behind Evgenia then we will be 4 maybe 5 up. D/R should be able to beat the other pair teams but if Russia is second then we'd be 5 to 6 points up going into the LP/FD. If V/M skate the Dance we should be 2 up from that -Shibs then S/B. we'd be up 7 or maybe 8. Is that enough for the ladies and men? Could Patrick or Gabby come last and the Russians come first and we'd still be a head? I need Mathman to figure this out.

I was running this math in my head too. Paging Mathman!

In the men's final, let's assume it's CAN, USA, OAR, ITA, JPN. I would guess Chan would place behind Kolyada (maybe?) in 4th (assuming Tanaka and Rippon place 1-3) and we could be 6 pts ahead. Gabby could place last in ladies' and we may still come ahead. But if that's the lineup for the final, I would guess ladies finish could be OAR, JPN, CAN / USA, and ITA (assuming it's not Kostner in the FS).

This is all very exciting! It's about closing the gap at this point.

So odd that some pairs will know if they do the LP (or not) an hour before...

In Ice Dance, what I'm really watching is the scoring of US vs OAR vs Italy. If all clean, US should run away with it, but then OAR vs Italy could completely be about the panel (like it has been for the last 2/3 seasons with C/L vs B/S). Can't wait to see the panel of judges either... that should be interesting.

Also waiting for Bradie, I hope she can handle the pressure (if she feels any), otherwise it's going to get nasty :(

Follow this twitter account if you want to laugh a lot : https://twitter.com/Lesdoggg I hope she'll be tweeting figure skating tonight though.

EDIT : I just saw a clip of Kana Muramoto, it was 3:40 a.m. and she had to get ready... I'm hating the schedule more and more.

Smelly mask on my face, feet up, in an hour going to sleep to wake up fabulously at 2am to silently shake up maracas to the Latin rhythms :cheer:

Je suis triste. Non, je suis malade mais aussi triste. I won't be able to watch live tonight. Maybe, possibly I'll be able to catch some of the Pairs Free live. That is if I'm not outside shoveling snow when I come home.

There are not enough unhappy face emojis.:sad21::disapp::sad4::sad46:

Go Evgenia, Satoko, Carolina and Kaetlyn!
V/M.. when you summon the devil I hope it doesn't infect the feed like at NHK.:eeking::eekn:
Best of luck to the Shibs, B/S, C/L and all the dancers.

*fingers crossed* I hope the FS for pairs is as good as the SPs were. :party2:

Oh noooooo. Bad friends. Don't they know that all you care about this month is FSing? I basically told my roommate that when I wasn't spending all my time at work I was going to be watching figure skating :p I went grocery shopping this morning to stock up on everything ahead of it all XD

RIP too much snow. I know this feel. For now while I wait for the team event I am watching curling and napping. Probably at some point there should be food.

Thanks to the folks who shared Evgenia's practice skate and V/M's. I'm loving the changes V/M have added even since the nationals. Can't wait for tonight.

I'm really proud that Canada is going all out with their selection. I agree that with so many incredible veterans having their last Olympics, a team gold would be an incredible way to celebrate all that they've brought to the sport and to Canada. Who knows, maybe some good performances here will give all the participants some great momentum and confidence going into their individual events.

I do miss the silly outfits and the like from the WTT since that and the sense of a team are one of my favourite parts.

Yes to that  One of the reasons why we should get the Team event after the individual... I need my #TeamFrance shot of Kiss&Cry fun. And to show how fun figure skating can be !

Exactly! Give them all space to unwind. Plus it makes the team event the prestigious cherry on top of strong individual events.

I do get some reasons for having it early. For one, they want the individual events to get the prestigious later slots in the Olympics to build suspense. Two, the chance for skaters to build momentum into the individual events. Three, the suspense of strategy which wouldn't happen if it was last but also leads to teams like France and China checking out (which makes teh whole event less fun for everyone).

But at the end of the day, I feel like the attitude of the skaters, the performances at WTT and the fun of the silly costumes in contrast to the solemnness of the team Olympic event, some of the best skaters being missing, the higher importance of the SP, etc speaks for itself.

Has Alina even arrived yet? imo, they might do Medvedeva for free as well, since she missed a few competitions and needs more experience with the current programs she has before the individual event, esp the free. Alina's been skating hers for the 2nd year

IIRC Jackie Wong reported that Keegan Messing was on practice ice for the team event instead of Patrick Chan. Canada is very, very likely to get gold here, but it's not guaranteed; if Gabby places last that OAR could win. Right now, OAR has 13 points and Canada has 17 points.

SP/SD:
Kaetlyn places 3rd (8 points), losing to one of Miyahara and Kostner. Medvedeva is 1st (10 points).
V/M win (10 points), B/S come in 4th, behind S/S and C/L (7 points).

Totals after the SP/SD: OAR 30 points, Canada 35 points

FS/FD:
Kolyada wins (10 points), Messing is last (6 points) -- Rizzo & Messing have the same average over the season in the FS, so it's a tossup, but it could definitely happen.
Zagitova wins (10 points), Italy uses Carolina and Gabby is last (6 points).
D/R win (10 points), Z/E are 2nd (9 points).
V/M win (10 points), B/S are 3rd behind S/S but ahead of C/L (8 points).

Totals: OAR 67 points, Canada 67 points, but OAR would win the tiebreaker.

Conclusion: almost everything would have to go Russia's way for them to win, but it's still possible.

I might be awake in time for this, but won't be watching LIVE as I haven't seen the SP yet (I was concentrating on catching up on ski sports today). If I am up, I'll be watching my local Olympian, snowboarder Aimee Fuller, in the Women's Slopestyle Qualification.
