2018 Olympic Season: Ice Dance

This article was published last week about what to expect from V/M at the Canadian Nats: https://bevsmithwrites.wordpress.com/2018/01/05/virtue-and-moir-reborn-after-the-grand-prix-final/

“Papadakis and Cizeron became the first to best the 200 total mark when they unleashed a world record 201.98 points at the Grand Prix in France, and then again at the Grand Prix Final when they recorded 202.16.”

Someone's forgotten about cup of china. But you know, if it aint about a Canadian, who cares if you get your facts right or not........

Trust me this season, Anna looks just as awkward over her skates as Stepanova. Albeit C/L have the slight edge in that they do have the better SD. If only they had the skating skills to pull it off. I find both FDs to be a snooze, but S/B are just slightly more compelling as a couple so I could see both B/S and S/B on the podium. But we'll see, I hope.

As for Canadians, the judges seem to have G/P firmly pegged in third. W/P would have to have a poor showing similar to what they had in France to not be in second. But let's see what the skaters have to say for themselves.

W&P have to be worse than they were in France to lose to G&P. Even with their problems which kept them out of the GPF ultimately, they were close to both Chock & Bates and Stepanova & Bukin which Gilles & Poirier cannot be.

If anything we've learned about ice dance this week: we can't speak in absolutes.

True, but as we've said from the beginning, there is a high probability that the Gadbois camp could really sweep the podium. Provided of course Zack keeps it together. Madison looks ready to take this. But you are right the ice can be slippery at times. I just hope we have a stellar competition free of injuries and silly mistakes.

Judges have completely embraced cappelini! They made her world champion while they bury Stepanova in 10 th place in short dances.

Have you watched C/L this season? She needs to go back to Igor for some lessons because SHE looks just as or even more wooden than Stepanova and the judges have noticed it. C/L are holding on to that 6th place by the skin of their teeth. They have regressed, so unless they really dig deep I wouldn't say anything is a lock for them. Personally though as they look to be retiring at the end of this season, I really hope they turn things around. They can be better than what they've shown thus far.

C/L are one of the very consistent teams out there, they definitely can capitalize on somebody else's mistake. But then, at Euros why are they ALWAYS so close to that gold medal ? (I don't agree with that by the way.)

If everyone is clean, you have : FRA, CAN*2, USA*3, and RUS above. That's 8th place for them. They have been beaten by Gilles/Poirier and even Step/Bukin are closing the gap score wise, but for this season maybe not (certainly not at worlds in Milan). Since probably FRA + USA*2 (at least) + RUS (B/S are going IIRC) + Maybe CAN (WeaPo) are going to worlds this year, I hardy see them having a retirement bronze too.

I did and their gpf performance was solid and they made the gpf! That shows they are an extremely beloved team by judges who don’t see any deterioration. Judges have destroyed b/s this season because of their massive deterioration and don’t think anything of s/b.

Well probably we have to agree to disagree on this one. But really and truly I find C/L rather campy and dull this season, with S/B not that far behind so if C/L make mistakes S/B could make a medal out of it.

I feel S/B are on track to medal in Euros. :dance3:

S/B highest scores were at Rostelecom : 71.32 for SD and 108.03 for FD. Not that home inflated because in France they got 70 and 107. They are closing the gap, and I think judges respond well to their SD (even though that Rumba pattern is IMO not good AT ALL considering their skating skills, maybe it'll get reworked). But if they have a 73 and a 110, this is going to get dangerous.
But the nerves too got the best of them at nationals. They definitely knew they had such a shot at beating B/S and after one mistake they didn't skate their best. But yes, medal at Euros... gut feeling (since Rostelecom ?).

I think B/S are definitely getting that silver though.

Silver or BUST as they say. Otherwise Zhulin might start crying like a baby again.

If C/L makes mistakes that allows B/S to move up for silver. B/s are bronze in Europe. They aren’t considered better than c/l. C/l making mistakes like missing twizzles or step sequence may allow for two Russian teams on the podium! This is why I believe only c/l giving their worst performance of their careers is the only way for them not to medal.

Just calm down. C/L won’t end off the podium unless a really serious mistake at EC.

This pretty much. I can see Stepanova / Bukin on the podium though if Bobrova / Solovyov bomb or if they outskate them and by some chance they acknowledge that.

I predict
P/C
B/S
S/B
C/L
G/F
as Euros are in Moscow, I see 2 Russian teams on the podium, but with P/C miles ahead :yahoo:

I want the Danish in 6th as I love their programs this season and they were 7th last season.

I fear for C/B, :palmf:

I shall be excited to see if the Spanish can make a break through

The Danish SD is in my top 4 this season. I hope they can be at least 6th too.
At NHK Coomes/Buckland had their PCS all over the place. It really shows that there is some sort of reputation PCS, because the judges couldn't figure out where they fit.
I'm hoping for Spain in Top 10 so that we get to see 2 teams next year !

Oh ... I completely forgot that the European Championships are in Russia. It can help them and I don't mean it in any shady way. But it's obviously much safer bet that C/L will medal all in all.
