2018 US Championships Sr Men FS

I watched all the Olympic skating competitions that The Olympic Channel played last week (all of them since 2002). Quads were being done in 2002, so I'm not sure they can be said to be all that new....

A quad or two is not new, but doing quad flips, lutz, etc and doing 4 and more in a program is. So is training quads day in and day out, and starting it really young, even pre teen. How much and how long can a body take all that pounding? We don't know exactly yet but we do know many very talented skaters have injured themselves badly training for them under the pressure of needing them to be competitive.

I disagree that you earn it with one skate out of nowhere. The selection process is supposed to include the body of work, which Ross Miner does not have. Either do what you say you're going to, or go back to taking the top 3 no matter who they are.

Ross is Tier 1 in body of work with his silver medal at Nationals.

True, but worlds is where we get placements for next year, so I would rather send someone with a higher score potential.

Send the medalists to worlds, and leave worlds for Adam? Idk

Adam and Nathan should be able to get 3 spots for the US if they are sent to Worlds, along with Ross.

Vincent had his best competition this season at Nationals and was still beaten by Ross.

Why won't he want to? And if he's on team and the US's best shot for a medal, shouldn't he have to?

Because he'd be too worn out for the men's competition which is more prestigious than the team competition (in my opinion).

Not to derail, and this post was ages ago in this fast moving thread, but I feel you so much on this. Why can't they manage to get their promising juniors successfully into a senior career? Like to the point where Cimpian moved countries to avoid their program. Why does Larissa Iordache keep getting injured? She's one of the best gymnasts in the world but most people will never know it because she wasn't at Rio and because she lost her best opportunity to get AA gold at 2017 world's with Simone Biles not there. Oh, Lari! :sad21:
It's a complete and utter mismanaged travesty. [emoji24][emoji24][emoji24][emoji24][emoji24]

I think that’s whether you go with body of work is a case by case thing.

In 2014, Ashley was the strongest lady based of BOW, whereas Adam isn’t the strongest man. Adam not going doesn’t make or break anything for the US.

Now, if Nathan bombed and was 4th, then we would have a body of work situation that cannot be ignored.

I hope the changes next year will help that some...

I bet Brown retires right away, and the placements for the teams shuffle up by one.

Alternates will be important, too. High likelihood that someone will get quad-injured. IIRC alternates get more funding than they might if they weren’t alternates, even if they don’t compete.

That seems completely unlikely. Jason clearly loves to skate, perform and compete. I can't imagine that he won't go back to the drawing board after this and work to come back stronger and better.

Totally, totally agree! It would be a so unfair to leave Ross--in second place!--off the team. He delivered when it counted, with the best skate of the night. He even had a real quad. Vincent has lots of potential and a gorgeous quad lutz. I'm ok with giving Adam Worlds as a consolation prize, but he should not be on the Olympic team after his skate tonight.

according to the rest of the selection criteria, no he didn't. he's had 2 poor seasons until this competition. i don't think it would be wise to send a skater who hasn't won any medals or showed that he can be competitive in that long of a period of time. yes, nationals is a big part of the criteria but dude does not do well internationally.

adam has medalled in all his international competitions the past 2 years exept the GPF, which he made both seasons.

I mean, isn't Vincent getting a negative GOE on all of these URs and doesn't exactly have a track record of clean performances this year.....

Oops by Flipsydoodle.

Looks like the orange toupee's alternative reality has been making it rounds here. None of the men has been consistent this season, a mess all around as usual.

Or, I guess consistently messing up their jumps.

Ross is Tier 1 in body of work with his silver medal at Nationals.

How is one medal at Nationals in a higher tier than multiple medals at International competitions and making the GPf?

Maybe Ross getting on the podium tonight was the USFS judging panel trying to redirect the sport back to less of an emphasis on the TES and quads. Ross did the best with what he had. They should never have changed the criteria for selection to the Olympic team, then there wouldn't be all of this chaotic discussion.

Both Bay Area kids got bronze! Yay Karen and Vincent! [emoji106]

Ideally, I would like to see them send Nathan, Vincent, and Adam to the Olympics... Ross has an amazing skate but didn't beat Vincent by much... it feels wrong to bump him off but I feel sad for Adam... :(
I do and don't feel sad for Adam... it's the age-old don't count your chickens before they're hatched... it's also the case of it's a sport and you have to have the technical as well as the performance I think that Vincent has both of them and I really hope that he makes the team. Because ironically this is 2016 all over again when Adam was national champion and Nathan was 3rd because he could just jump and didn't have the Artistry that adam did. Tonight Vincent proved he had it both he went out there and he lay it on the line he threw down those quads because he wanted to be on the team. That is something on them can't do I don't know when he has last landed the quad Lutz in competition yes he goes for it but when's the last time you landed it

Because he'd be too worn out for the men's competition which is more prestigious than the team competition (in my opinion).

Then he shouldn't be on the team competition. Team members need to do what's best for the team.
