2018 US Championships Sr Men FS

I would not send him. Last year he finished 9th and 12th in his GP assignments. This year he was 6th and 6th in his GP assignments. Nathan, Adam, and Jason all made the GPF. He had a wonderful skate and I am happy for him. But if we are sending our best to the Olympics, I would not send Ross Miner. If it's just to reward how they skate at nationals I guess then send him. But Ross Miner is not going to do anything at the Olympics.

Yes, but I think it would be too hard to justify not sending the silver medalist, imo.

The spirit of the olympics is about dreams coming true and such.

My laptop died at the last second and I had to stop posting but wow, what an emotional rollercoaster. Heartbroken for Jason and Adam (and Max). Vincent tried his best to show what he's capable of. Ross deserves all my praise. Nathan stood up to the challenge.

I'm still processing all this. I don't think I even have an opinion on who should be on the team. I'm glad to let someone else decide. :drama:

How much does the team event factor into this decision? I doubt TPTB want Nathan skating both sections of the team event. Given Rippon, Miner, and Zhou, one of them is likely to get one program. Which one gets it?

Before this fiasco, Adam was the perfect choice for the FS. He didn’t need to win, just not bomb. Now O would question if he could hold up under pressure. Vincent might be a good substitute for the FS.

I’m not even certain most athletes still want to be competing at 28. Maybe some people wanna hit big and bounce to something new before they turn 21. I see nothing wrong with that. It’s a big world full of opportunity.

OK. But I hope they're able to walk at 28. I'm not so sure about that (without joint replacement surgery). I hate the URs, sloppy landings, falls with all the quads being thrown around. Give me beautiful skating like Adam & Jason (usually, not tonight) and Misha Ge. Those are my favorite programs this season. Technical, yet also beautiful and balanced. Some of these quad guys can't do a decent spin to save their lives.

Aaaaand I'm dead. I think I may have burned some calories just by laughter alone tonight. Probably enough to cancel out 2 lime &a jalapeño seasoned tortilla chips. 2 out of the 20.

Shhh, if you're eating during skating, you burn calories by stressing about your favorites

Then what would you do next month? You not joining us eating snacks and watching Olympics on questionable-legality streams and argue with each other later on in the comments? What better things you need to do in life? Come and join us.
Lol
Yes

People like Adam a lot more than Ashley, and people also really liked Mirai.

I really like Mirai’s personality too, but her LP in 2014 coined the phrase “taking a smoke break.” It was so humorous that so many cried she was robbed of a trip to Sochi.

I wouldn't be upset if Adam gets placed on the team but I honestly don't think his "body of work," while certainly superior to that of Ross and Vincent, is frankly enough to justify it. He isn't a medal contender and his narrative is nowhere near as strong as Ashley's in 2014 (where the precedence was set). They can't just keep using it every possible chance otherwise nationals becomes a joke. USFSA need to be selective when pulling that card out :slink:

I agree. Ashley was the #1 American lady, Adam is not the #1 American man. Great point about using the "body of work" every time, it'll take even more from Nationals. I still think Adam has high possibilities of being sent.

I don't think Adam crumbled under pressure. He missed the 4Lz, but recovered very well. It wasn't until the end that disaster struck. I'm more likely to think the 3s was rushed due to loss of focus or excitement. I don't think the 3S was missed because Adam crumbled under pressure.

Adam definitely crumbled under the pressure tonight when you look at how he's been all season long. It was the worst he's been all season without question. What you described is what happened to Mariah Bell in the ladies long

Any Lorde fans here?? "And the terror and the horror oh I wonder why we bother..all the glamour and the trauma and fcking melodrama whoa" my personal theme song for this US nationals... SO MUCH DRAMA

“And you know, we’re on each other’s team...” Unless your name is Ashley or Max or Jason or Adam... :(

I will be shocked if Ross does not get named to the Olympic team. Federations rarely bump the Silver medalist when 3 spots are available,
but stranger things have happened. IMO they will go with the podium finishers.

Congrats to Nathan, Ross and Vincent!

ETA: Well the "stranger things have happened" happened. Ross not only bumped from the
team but not even 1st alternate.

Right. I don't see these 5 quad guys still competing at the top level at age 28, like Adam. The ISU really needs to change the rules to limit the number of quads.

The Prudential Skate Radio guys said the men's long is being reduced by 30 seconds next year and one required jump is being removed. They also said quads were going to be downgraded; that originally they were given a bonus because they were rare but now enough people are doing them and they're making the programs too unbalanced and not enough attention is being paid to skating skills (paraphrasing here). I love the skate radio guys and I wish they called the worlds and GPs too...

Leaving the silver medalist out would be the perfect opportunity for USFSA to elucidate their new criteria. This isn't just about nationals. It's time to get people used to it because that is no longer the best way to choose.

I agree. If the rules are as they have professed them to be,that is body of work is taken into consideration, the team would have to be Vincent, Nathan, Adam. Vincent was lastyear’s silver medalist and junior gold medalist. With the bronze this year, he cannot be left off the team. The debate for the selection committee will be whether Adams body of work is sufficient to bump Ross. They will either leave it as is or sub Adam for Ross.
