2018 US Championships Sr Men FS

I think that personally, I don't like this way of choosing a team at all. Just because everything clicked on one day, someone is being sent to the Olympics? While others who have been very consistent (Adam to name here) might be left out? That's a big no-no for me. I still think the German system of choosing the athletes is the best, where they accumulate the points of the three best competitions a skater had in that very season (*including* nationals!).

I am generally someone who loves body of work. I like to see consistency rewarded. But figure skating does not give us that comfort on the biggest stages. If it was about consistency Michelle Kwan and Kurt Browning (two of my absolute favorites) would have gold medals. People can capture magic on specific nights so we also have to consider that. The Christopher Bowman type of performance has to be considered. Again, I'm not saying Ross should definitely be on the team but he made a very good case for himself.

Bradie would need the approval of Uncle Raffie. Is she good enough for his son?

I guess there is nothing wrong with marrying an older woman but people please focus for good ness ake.

Nathan is in for sure. But looking at the criteria I think Vincent and Adam - I won't say obvious because I see other shave different opinions. A skate off is unlikely.

It is almost the worst scenario for making a decision with Ross in second = maybe he should be happy he got his Paul Wylie moment and now he has to let it go. When you look at the body of work he shouldn't go. It just would have been easier had Adam been third or Ross third. I do feel bad about Vincent and last year but he has not skated well this year or very consistently. He has been all over the place.

Bring on the tears tomorrow/today.

I know you said this about 1992 nationals but all I could think about was the mess that was the 1992 Olympics--though Wylie was brilliant there. Kurt and Todd (and several others) messing up the short--I was devastated. I really hope we don't get a splatfest with Ross rolling in to win silver at the Olympics :drama::noshake: :laugh2:

I'm no expert, but my best guess is Chen, Rippon, and Zhou, with 1st alt Jason, and 2nd alt Ross.

Just watched rinkside reactions from the mens free, and apparently Alex Krasnozhon skated through the flu and was at the hospital fighting it yesterday - I also know his training mate Amber Glenn likewise skated through the flu. Considering the circumstances, they both performed admirably. I kind of wondered because Alex is usually so animated, and he seemed very subdued. Sounds like there has been a lot of sickness going around this year among competitors.

Nathan's costumes are so shockingly ugly I have no words. I mentioned Asian-american/Canadian designers in his fan fest but if he insists on basic geometric ones he should called Nichole Farhi. Simple but classy.

Watching all the men FS, I want to see Ross at the Olympic so bad. His FS needs OG moment seriously.

Not impressed by the quality of Nathans quads. They all looked sloppy.

What's up with the giant zipper on the back of his costume?

Yes to your three, but Jason will not be first alt no matter how the rest of this shakes out... his year is done.

I wouldn’t be so sure. That Jackie Wong PowerPoint (lol) has Jason meeting a lot of those tiered criteria. Not all are medals, but all are respectable placements, with very respectable scores.

He has no shot at the team outright now, but definitely one of the alternate spots. He was pretty much widely considered for that third spot, before the rough LP.

He didn't. In fact I think he deliberately single that toe. Maybe the final Olympic would have no 3A. That jump pass could easily by an easier triple that was not jumped 3S. If he maintains this layout without the 3A, he will not be doing any lutzes or axels in the entire Free Skate and he still get to do 5 quads.

It's a bit strange to say "oh we picked X over Y bc X performed better at LAST YEAR's nats, like that was the deciding factor for us. we went back, dug up the archives, and then we decided that Y's fate was already sealed when he screwed up nats last year" I'm not trying to mock what ur saying, I'm just visualizing what happens when USFS releases a statement like that and the public reaction etc. etc.

Also, it's kinda unfair to penalize Rippon and Miner for not going to juniors because they were age ineligible. whereas RM has no excuse for his absence from GP. But I definitely agree with you that the team should be Chen, Zhou, Rippon.

Why not? They justified not sending Ashley over a level 3 spin and a shaky combo. Real words by Sam Auxier. :palmf:

Well, I guess I'll chime in with my impressions from the arena. I'm pretty emotionally spent --basically the last group was like intense in so many ways.

Vincent had URs a plenty, but his performance was very compelling today. I gave him a standing ovation. His 4Z-3T is really nice, especially with the rippon on the 3T. He has a lot to work on, but he really put it all out there.

Grant made a lot of errors, but I did enjoy his performance. He really skates with his heart.

Ross has been on of my favorites since 2011 Nationals, so I was absolutely thrilled to see him pull off such an amazing skate. I think the girls sitting in front of my were looking at me funny cause I was basically just screaming and clapping in excitement. Ross's choreography was probably the most memorable out of all the men tonight.

But then to see both Adam and Jason struggle hear was heartbreaking! I had come to respect Adam and really expected him to slay again like he did the SP. He struggled with the 4Z, but I thought he would just nail the rest of the program, like he did in the season. I was absolutely shocked to see him pop those two jumps. The program is beautiful, but kind of a blur/energy sapping after the mistakes. It was such a sad contrast to the intense amazing energy he had in the SP. He had really nice 3As. It's really cool to see how consistent he is on that jump considering he struggled with it so much a few years back.

And Jason. Ugh. This was probably more heartbreaking cause I had witnessed such an amazing moment from him four years ago. I agree with gravy that he was pretty tight after that hard fall on the 4T. I knew it was game over after that. The actual skating -- steps/spins etc. were awesome -- he's really improved in his skating skills/flow from a few years ago. But I do feel like though he tried hard to keep the performance together, he didn't really have the spark or resolve he usually has -- see his Riverdance FS from Sochi ....technical issues, but he still kept a decent performance level -- I don't think he gave up per se, but he never unwound himself (and the judges agreed, it was weird to see 8.75 in performance). I will say, referring to gravy's post earlier, that smiling thing afterwards was a defense mechanism, I honestly think he would have cried right there if he didn't fake the smile.

Nathan was great. As I said earlier, I did like the costume, but now seeing it in the context of the program, I'm not sure if it really worked. Honestly I don't remember the program now. He definitely deserved to win and I remember that he had some nice performance moments and there was some good choreography there, but now I totally forgot it. Maybe I'll watch it on video and it will jog my memory again.

As for the Olympic team -- tough choice. I do think it will be between Ross, Vincent and Adam. I certainly understand the case for Adam to go based on BOW, but I'm not sure if I could justify denying either Ross or Vincent based on their performances. I think Jason and Grant will get 4CC along with whoever of the trio aforementioned doesn't get the Olympic spot.

I guess I would send Ross to Olympics and Adam to Worlds. I'd send Vincent to both.

Outside the top six, I was thrilled to see Alexander Johnson bring back his "In Your Eyes" program. I totally misted-up afterwards. He skates that program beautifully. Tomoki also slayed his FS (other than the popped axel) and Alexei Krasnozhon fought his way, which I admire. The jr. world team selection will be tough also, but I think it will likely be Alexei, Camden and Tomoki. I love Andrew Torgashev's skating but he's been struggling in his last few competitions (and he finished behind Tomoki here also). Sean Rabbit entertained as always and Jimmy Ma had a really good skate -- his 3A is very much improved. While Jason struggled, his training mates, Jordan Moeller and Ben Jalovick, had some really nice free skates tonight -- Jordan moved up from 20th to 15th and Ben moved up from 19th to 16th.

Has he indicated that he would not accept a 4CC bid? I can't imagine the Olympic team members will go to 4CC with the Games so close afterwards.

Jason might be disappointed with the result, but he doesn't seem the sort that would refuse if the Fed asked. He's been pretty much a team player.

An axel is a required element in the Free Skate. It just doesn't need to be a double or triple like in the SP.

Congrats to the podium finishers and to Nathan for his second consecutive national title! I still need to catch up on most videos but I see this was a heartbreaking event for some and a completely unexpected turn for others. I have my hopes for the Olympics team, so let's see what USFSA does. Devastated for Jason, though. :sad21:

Jason will definitely take 4CC if it's offered. He loves those programs and I think he would still like opportunity to perform them before another audience, especially internationally. Also he gets ISU championship points too, why would anyone refuse that?

Also knowing Jason, I won't put it past him that he ends up slaying there. He'll be hungry for redemption. I mentioned this in his fan fest thread--but outside of the actual competition, he was hitting his 3As in both the warm-ups (before competition) before SP and FS. This morning (Saturday) he didn't miss ANY jump except the quad (and even with the jump he pulled off a few OK attempts, not perfect, but serviceable) in the warm-up session. He's probably more disappointed in himself that he didn't pull off what he usually does in practice and less about the score/result.
