I am wondering why Kaori is repeating the 3Lo and not her 3F. Maybe because of what happened at worlds?

It's probably just because it's summer...
why would she do that? 1 pop is not a good enough reason to get rid of a second flip, it's the jump with the highest BV for Kaori.

Congrats to the medallists, what a season opening for Yuhana! And good decision for Wakaba to WD, poor girl looked very ill after the SP. Hope she gets well soon.

Mai's coach Nagano has given an update on Mai's condition. Mai is currently very weak and has no appetite. They don't think she can be well enough for the Challenger in September. They aim for a competition at the beginning of October.

Oh my goodness, poor Mai! What's going on with her? I knew she WD from Gensan Cup but thought it was a minor injury or something? :[

Thanks! I knew she was suffering from juvenile arthritis but guess I should learn more as I naively thought of it as joint pain that couldn't affect such things as appetite

On the one hand, this is terrible news, and I hope she feels better ASAP.
On the other hand...can Ayaka Hosoda take her place in the challenger?
I mostly hope that if she can't compete at regionals it won't prevent her to compete at nationals. If i'm not mistaken, all skaters but national champ have to compete at regionals and sectionals to qualify for nats. Usually top skaters don't have to because they have challengers and GP assignements close to regionals and sectionals. So they can withdraw. But since Mai probably won't compete at her challenger i guess she really has to compete at regionals.
It would be great if Ayaka get the spot. There is usually generous scoring and lenient calls at Lombardia. I think that Yura Mastuda was really glad to compete there and not at US classic or ACI for example. She ot in SB 24 list so got two GPs.

The entry list to Lombardia Trophy has been announced: http://www.isuresults.com/events/cat03109503.htm so no Mai and only Wakaba enters.
(I wasn't expecting Ayaka to get a replacement...as there were two entries from Japan assigned to start with. If it were not Wakaba but Yuna (Shiraiwa) who got the Lombardia Trophy, there might have been slight bigger chance to tag Ayaka on, given the same coach team.)
Some explanations about participation to regionals/sectionals under the regulations by JSF: basically, only skaters who have been placed on the podium in the previous year's Nationals can get exemption to these national competitions. Otherwise, all skaters are required to get through regional, then sectional to get to All Japan National. The 6 regionals are usually held in between late Sept to Oct 20th. So other than the top 3 from the nationals last year, the other skaters in the strengthened category A and above might get CS assignment(s) in overlap with their regional competitions, and thus get the 'bye' to their regional assignments. But the assignments to international competitions and the required national competitions (regional/sectional) are two separated things. It's the case that if a skater is assigned to an international competition that will be held close to the obligated national competitions (such as within 1 week before and after the national competition), then s/he can get a 'bye' to the required national competition.
So for the regional competitions attendances from Cat. A and above (incl. special strengthened skaters) sr. ladies this season, other than Kaori, Rika, and Satoko, the others:
Mai - need to attend Kinki regional (Oct 3-6) [So Lombardia doesn't cover her regional competition actually]
Wakaba - need to attend Tokyo regional (Sept 20-23) [May be covered by Lombardia?]
Mako - need to go to Chubu regional (Sept 27-29) [May be covered by Nepela?]
Yuhana - need to go to Chubu regional (Sept 27-29) [Finlandia seems a bit later, so she may show up in regional if no surprise]
Ayaka - need to go to Kinki regional [no assignment]
Yuna - need to go to Kinki regional [not sure if US-Classics can cover the regional]
Marin - need to go to Tokyo regional [CAN be covered by Nebelhorn]
So I'm guessing Mai was originally planning to attend regional anyway. I think the Kobe girls usually take on the national competitions if they're required to.

Rika and Mako's cases were related to one condition I didn't mention: for the junior skaters who were on the podiums of junior Nationals previous season and moving up to senior level in the current season, they couldn't automatically get a 'bye' to national competitions at senior levels. So for Mako her 2nd placement at Jr. Nationals of 2017 didn't get her an exemption to regionals last year, nor for Rika's winning of Jr. Nationals during 2017 (although Rika later on did get on the podium at All Japan Nationals in 2017, which made her one of the seeded skaters of 18' season. So her attendance at regional last season was indeed volunteered, IIRC).
Similarly for this season, skaters turning to Sr. levels including Yuhana Yokoi and Koshiro Shimada won't be able to get exemptions for national competitions.

Such a talent. I wish her well. I know this can be serious. Wasn't there a Canadian skater or American Nicole Watt??? whose career came to an end because of juv arthritis? It is a real barrier.
