2019-20 Russian Ladies' Figure Skating

The ladies free will begin at 15:00 Finland/Moscow time, which is 8:00am New York time. So in about 9 hours. :-)
Thank you for the New York time even though I live in Florida. It's the same anyway. ;) I'm especially looking forward to some great skating tomorrow. Hoping Alena wins her senior debut.

The Denis Ten Memorial gave us a chance to see some up and coming stars and it looks like some who are fading. I feel so bad for Maria Sotskova. She just can't rotate those jumps. Hasn't improved her skating skills and her freeskate was wrought with falls - her score rivalled Gracie Gold's fs recently. I wonder if a new coach would help? You just want to encourage her; it must be so hard. She was the Sofia, the Pogo, Elena Sokolova ot Viktoria Volchkova of her time.

I am so sad for Maria . She had a lot of potential but sadly her consistency is pretty bad and her jumps are just not good anymore

I kind of see why Lisa is pissed, although I am surprised she didnt do this at russian cup final last year

“It would be better if I hadn’t.” Sakhanovich about her victory at the Denis Ten Memorial in Almaty

Yegor Ilyin The winner of the Denis Ten Memorial in Almaty, Serafima Sakhanovich, in an interview with Prosports.kz correspondent, summed up the results of her performance at the tournament and shared her plans for the future.

- I’m not happy with the performance. Already at the warm-up, my mood wasn't the same. I generally go to bed very early. This is not an excuse, but it was hard for me to skate.

Q: In general, how can you evaluate your performance at the Memorial?
A: Generally unhappy. There are so many errors in my free program that I don’t want to talk about this skating run. I liked the tournament itself: organization, buses, training, the ice rink, the hotel, there was always something to drink in the locker rooms - everything’s super. There was also a very warm welcome. Clapping, cheering for me, the impressions are very good. It would be even better if I didn’t fix it in my free program (laughs).

Q: Soon one of the main tournaments of the season will come - the Championship of Russia, how do you tune in to it?
A: What is the main one? I still won’t get into the top three, what's the difference of being tenth or fifteenth (laughs). For Alina Zagitova, Sasha Trusova, Alyona Kostornaya, Anya Shcherbakova - yes, it is important, for all the others - no.

Recall that according to the results of the short program Serafina also took first place.

She did, though? All that talk about the little girl inside of her and how they killed it? I mean, I can understand why she’s angry but I’m not sure it’s exactly a smart thing to do. I do applaud her for speaking up about injustice but dragging others into this (in this case Aliona apparently) just goes too far. It‘s not good sportsmanship anymore. And complaining about judging during an on going event with the FS still to skate... strategically unwise imo. Let’s see what the judges will do in the FS today.

And besides, Liza‘s score WAS low and she does deserve more GOE on some of her jumps. But she’s also constantly losing GOE and level on spins and steps. That can be 2-3 points in BV alone right there. So, while I do agree that her score was pretty low, she also keeps losing points in those areas and that‘s not the fault of the judging but of herself and her coaching team.

I wonder why Liza‘s not doing 3Lz+3T in the SP. Her flip edge looks much better when it‘s a solo jump, she only loses control of it when it‘s in combo. (I suspect due to the longer entry?) And I bet she would get more GOE for 3Lz+3T as well.

I know Liza is frustrated about the scores but one thing just came to my mind why she could be happy after all. Now that Lilbet withdrew from Skate America and will probably be out/in bad shape for CoC, Liza is basically almost guaranteed two silvers on the GP, which could very well be enough for GPF. :)
(sorry if someone already mentioned it before)

I thought that meme Liza posted of her own lutz getting 0 GOE was really funny, but dragging Alena into it just makes it rude, imo.

While it is nice that she's able to laugh it off, she's crossed the line a little involving Alena. Liza needs to focus on her own performances and improving and not on what others are doing. She's made a step in the right direction changing her SP music back and it did help but her low score was because of technical issues...she needs to address those instead of complaining and unfairly dragging her teammates into it.

From all the press and that latest interview I gather #TeamMishin and #TeamTutberidzeForProgress aren't exactly 'mates' in the sense of teammates. Mishin's era comes to an end, and he is slowly fading out, taking all of Sankt Peterburg down if FFKSPb doesn't make changes soon.

The other team is on the rise and has 4 Aces in play, the stronger cards overall, and will remain the strongest force in Russian ladies single up to the Olympics. I hope never to hear Khrustalniy skaters talk in public like that about fellow competitors, esp not at adult age and experience like Tuktamysheva.

I understand her frustration over the scoring, and having to loose to 'little girls', but the same laconic attitude towards her skating really does her chances no good.

Tbh I feel like this "dragging Alena into this" was overblown by the media. The IG story used in the article was posted by somebody else and only reposted by Liza among many other stories people tagged her in (unless I don't know about something else that she said). The video about the GOE on the lutz was spot on. Other skaters complained about their scores - Fernandez about an UR, Mirai Nagasu about getting PCS in the 6s, etc. They have every right to do so.

I have to say that I already had mixed to negative feelings about Liza's behaviour and sarcastic thumbs up in the KnC area. But well, it is what it is, I'm also very sensitive to questionable KnC behaviour so if it doesn't happen all the time I suppose it's ok, we all feel disappointed/let down at times and express it differently.

IMO Liza's behaviour in the K&C was nothing compared to Matteo Rizzo's, who stormed out of the K&C at last year's Italian nationals when he learnt he'd been beaten by Daniel Grassl.

She had some harsh calls and GOE. Of course she was upset. I believe Sasha used bad language in the K&C last week when she got lower scores than she was hoping for. They are human. People get upset when they feel undervalued. It is to be expected. Why would anyone make a big deal about it?

Adeliya Petrosyan just proved her worth, thinking on her feet to add back all the combinations that didn't work out as planned in her draft program. Some problems with stability and endurance, but a great skate nevertheless, but will her ranking be enough?

Sof'ya Gorbachyova delived an excellent free program just before, and will win a medal here. Good for her and her club and region.

Sof'ya Akat'yeva took a hard fall on her quad Toeloop but otherwise posted the superior score, triksel and all, but will no doubt be disappointed over her performance. Looks a little sad in the K&C.

Sasha didn't use anything bad.

What did the IG story say? I can‘t see it on her page. I was a bit surprised too because I‘d only seen some complaints about the GOE on the lutz, nothing that included Aliona.

Wow. OT, I know, but did he really do that?
