I agree completely. They have always had amazing programs (Carol Lane does not get enough recognition for her choreography), but when they first got together, while they had a lot of promise, there were definitely some rough edges. If you look back at their catalogue of work you can see clearly how much work they have done on the refinement of their skating and speed, free legs, edges etc. They did the hard work to make themselves a world class team — and they've really had to work against the fact that they are not the body types that are currently in vogue in ice dance (tall, naturally long lines). They've had to work really hard for every bit of judge recognition they're finally getting.

From Hitchcock to the Beatles, and Vincent on to Joni, how much more eclectic can they be? I think finding different ways to stand out, helps establish an identity, that is unique from the rest of the field.
G/P switched from quirk to schmaltz in the 2019 season, and continued in that style in 2020/2021. Will they go for a third season in that style, or go on to something completely different? My gut says they will stick with schmaltz because it works for them.

Brenda Irving said during the CBC broadcast that Nikolaj got his Canadian citizenship last year. Unusual that he didn't say anything about that on social media, but good that it's settled. Now he just needs to break the citizenship curse.
I must disagree with this characterization of their material, though I do know what you mean. They clearly did change direction in 2019, but I would not describe Vincent or Both Sides Now as schmaltz. These are not lovey-dovey cutsie programs. They are incredibly subtle pieces of work that require conveying emotions that are difficult to express on the ice. If Piper and Paul weren't absolute masters at creating a mood (I think they are the best in the world at it, to be honest) these programs would have fallen flatter than a pancake.
But to your larger point, I agree with you that we are more likely to see something more in the vein of Vincent or Both Sides Now than Hitchcock or Disco. Can you blame them? The judges didn't take their other programs seriously.

Geez chuckm, I remember last season you criticizing the choice of Joni's more senior, smokie, and a life well lived version of Both Sides Now, for the Free. Good thing Piper and Paul followed their instincts and ignored the critics. Like Joni, or a well aged fine wine and after 8 Worlds, Piper and Paul are finally getting the recognition they deserve.

Maybe unpopular opinion, but I think Canada should skip WTT. Roman said in his video that they can’t send anyone from Worlds since the 2 week quarantine when they get back, so other than Nam and Roman there isn’t very many strong skaters left. Is it worth risking their health in the middle of a pandemic for a useless tournament?
There are sanctions if they don't go, I don't know exactly what they are (at least a fine, not sure if there's anything else). There's also a decent amount of prize money, which I'm sure is especially helpful in covid times
I remember Scott Moir once said "I hate this event" while actually there lol

Weird, considering there isn't a punishment for not attending serious competitions like Worlds. Who enforces the sanctions, ISU?
Since WTT is in Japan, I'd think/hope that it isn't riskier than Worlds in terms of COVID...
