I think Aliona’s concern was valid. Advanced skaters can risk serious injury if forced to train their programs on crowded ice with less experienced skaters who can get in their way.

This issue may have been caused by Sergei leaving? Perhaps without enough coaches on staff the younger kids were training with the same coaches as the junior and senior ladies?

Agreed. Everyone keeps saying that Aliona trained with adults when she was 10 but she didn’t move to Eteri until later. And very few 10 year olds are on ice simultaneously with the three best skaters in the world.

But I suspect you are right that after Sergei left they combined groups. Because I remember Aliona and other Eteri skaters talking about being forced to train in the younger group when they were not meeting expectations. It seems they previously had multiple groups for training.

its probably an unpopular opinion but:

I HATE Billie Eilish music with the passion of a trillion burning suns so i want to know why a skater who has the potential to be artistically one of the best in history is skating to this crap? No adult is willing to say "girl I know you like her music but for a competitive program no way, save it for the exhibition." I'm totally biased since I hate the music but it seriously feels like taking all Alena's artistic potential and putting it in the trash bin.

Its just part of being with a big team and group. They all have to put up with it. It may be annoying to have ankle biters on the ice with you. But if Alina and many others can get through it and Aliona did for a few years just fine its just somehthng they have to deal with. Zhenya won Junior worlds then 2 senior worlds in a row and had to skate with kids on the ice at certain times. No way to avoid it other than leave and Aliona did.

I disagree. Find an international competition with 8 skaters warming up on the ice and you see it is already crowded. Then add in a bunch of 10 year olds who do not know yet how to identify patterns or who may not be as adept as others at dodging collisions and you've created a dangerous environment. There's no reason that we shouldn't respect Aliona's concerns, they are of course perfectly valid. Especially with things like her long 3A set up, or trying to skate fast and learn quads when we know that Aliona is a pattern jumper like Bradie and gets consistently by repeating an entrance over and over (which is definitely a contributing factor to why her lutz was shaky today also, that entrance change) Imagine trying to do that in a rink with 7 other girls skating who take up the whole rink, and then add in children, that is not a training environment that is an obstacle course.

I'd also add that we can see how easy it is to run out of space when she is so near Veronika in an AP instagram video of Veronika's 3A and there aren't even that many of them on the ice. There's also an extended interview that wasn't posted here so I'll link it below my comments. She states that when she was ten they skated with older girls but they were told to stick to the boards, and if they interfered or cut off the older girls they would be booted from training. So I don't think that the problems with skating with the younger kids were insignificant. She also discusses getting yelled and cursed at for not performing which would be considered an abusive coaching practice in the United States where I'm at. Of note, she said that when something is not working well in practice with Plushenko, they abandon it, work on something else, then return to it. Which definitely seems more suitable for Aliona who can get very anxious and frustrated when something does not turn out well. Previously she has stated that she doesn't perform well when she doesn't connect to an image or the music. So I can see her frustration in telling her coaches multiple times that the SP wasn't working for her. If she can move to a coach who allows her to be Aliona on ice, to express herself musically, to commit to a persona and image that will allow her to compete at her best, then why wouldn't we want her to pursue that?

To me there are no problems with her departure. She brought up her concerns with her coaching team multiple times, and not unreasonable concerns either. She doesn't obscure the way the situation unfolded to the press, she didn't fuel drama as it was occurring, and she gives thanks to TT. She also raised concerns with the general environment, and it seemed as though she also had worries for Kamila and Anna, so definitely no hard feelings there as was portrayed earlier. She decided the the environment at Sambo 70 was not suitable for her anymore and left. It makes total sense. In any other country this would be a non-story.

I'm with ya. Billie Eilish is Gen Z's Lana Del Rey.

And then Zhenya left. And one of the reasons people attributed to her leaving was because she didn’t want to train with Alina and the 3A. It seems that even skaters who had considerable success with Eteri can have issues with the training or coaching situation. Aliona is not alone in wanting a change, for whatever reason, even after success.

And these aren’t your average 10 year olds skating. These are girls trying to prove themselves, be noticed, and challenge the older girls so they are probably less likely than to get out of the way or be mindful of the older skaters. If Aliona was afraid of getting hurt or didn’t feel she had the space on the ice to train her 3A that seems like a valid concern and reason to leave.

Oh the awkwardness, seriously that must have been pretty uncomfortable for all concerned. Everyone seemed to behave themselves though!

I was only able to watch the first group of ladies then catch up on the second group this morning.

I thought Liza's SP really suited her and Zhenya could really make the Masquerade Waltz her own.

I'll add my dissatisfaction with Billie Elish (spelling?) The music was so mumbled I didn't hear anything about a crown!

Totally love Sasha's SP, she really embraced it.

And Sofia's concept looks intriguing! Can't wait to see her costume.

Anna and Kamila were really good, Kamila's spins are wow! Anna's always elegant to watch. :)

Generally everyone in lady's field did well given the Covid situation. My top 1 rank is Sasha - solid jumps, interesting program and improved performance.
Wish everyone best luck in FS and rest of the season!

I actually do think Trusova was the best here, and why? Because test skates aren't a competition. They are test skates. And especially this year's, having been held after such a wild off-season, is more an event to make a surprise. Who's gotten worse, and who (in spite of all circumstances) has gotten better. Yes, we ought to give Anya an extra pat on the back because of a wonderful attempt for the 3Lz+3Lo (though it was both flat edge and UR so... I think Trusova takes the lead in TES at the very least right?). Yes, her interpretation is simply wonderful and sublime, but this program is not that. It is way too similar to Perfume (I'm not the only one who thinks so apparently), but like... not as good? The step sequence has no connection to the music, and while the first half is beautiful, it's not a surprise. She's done the same thing in last year's SP. Kamila's was more of a pleasant surprise. I loved her EX a lot, so I was super excited about her SP. Actually, some of my favorite parts of the ex were stripped away (the long spiral, the spin right on the music), but overall it is a super decent program with a good StSq and good connection to the music. Good for Kami, but you know what's not so great... the jumps are still veeeeery prerotated. Not a huge problem, but if you look at it from a technique standpoint, Sasha wins. Was her program something new? Yes. Was it something new, and good? Yes. You know how rare that is nowadays? For something to be new AND good, and straight off the bat at test skates? And at test skates after not only corona but also a coaching change? In terms of PCS, yes, she still lacks a little, but that "little" used to be a huge gap. And that was fixed only in like what... 3 months? I don't know about you, but I love test skates because we get to see something new. And yet, Anya basically just gave as Perfume with better interpretation but worse choreography. So naturally I like Sasha's performance better.

I will oppose that it was completely new. Sasha actually had lyrical program like that already in february at the ice show The Way to Victory:

Similar to me, though I won't say anything like "not as good" as that seems like big piece of bias.

As for endless objections to Anna, I say the edge of the Lutz was outside:

As for the Lo, I would say "q", which under current rules is fully rotated.

Making conclusion about "getting worse" seems very bias again, as this is the first event of the season, it's not like this is how the whole season will look like.

I understand that you are a fan of Sasha, but you go pretty far with your comments. You can praise one without making unfriendly comments against the other one.

Figure skating is always partly a political game and TAT is an important figure in Russian figure skating. You think Alina likes her personally after she went on TV to tell her dad she likes another skater more? Or Radionova after TAT basically called her fat saying her skating is suffering because she like to eat too much. Or Gubanova after TAT said she looked like a duck more than a swan? However, if you want a career it's better to keep your head down, especially since TAT is not going anywhere in figure skating anytime soon, and she definitely has a lot of influence. It's sad because I think if she were American or Canadian, she would've gotten a lot of deserved backlash for the things she's said.

I am fully aware of that being in war with TAT brings you little good. It's rather TAT herself who fascinates me, like "now I deliver some nasty statements about you but then I will make a smiling selfie with you."

Though I remember voices from the past "but TAT hasn't so much power you think". Such pictures show she actually has THE power

I think it’s Aliona‘s choice. She’s a teen, she likes this kind of music, vampire movies, etc.
On one hand, if a skater enjoys the music, the skate to it better, so I’d say Aliona should stick to her choices sometimes, because she made the vampire program look good.
