and also, Gabby is making progress. I think Madeline will be hard to catch but I wish Gabby to regain her form and momentum ! Personal victories, if anything, are worth so much more than titles and medals, when looking back..
If Gabby regains her form it is game over. She is the best. Her power, speed, technical superiority and fire when she was at her top is currently unmatched by Madi, Em, Alison or anyone for that matter. That is a big if though. Still if she could skate like 2017 she would be Canada's best.

Sadly, I agree. Gabby is nowhere near the skater she was just a few seasons ago. I'm not sure if its a training, or coaching issue but, she'll need to improve a lot to make the Canadian Team this year.
Kaetlyn's retirement may have partly affected Gabby's motivation. But on the other hand, she's mentally unstable too though she always tries to act like she's fine. I feel sorry for her.

I agree with this. When Gabby could rely on Kaetlyn doing well, she was fine skating as Canada #2, because the pressure was on Kaetlyn. With Kaetlyn out of the picture, all the pressure shifted to Gabby and she just couldn't handle it. There were physical problems, then freak accidents on the ice, and she was always just recovering from one setback or other. Problem was, she never came back from any of the setbacks in any kind of competitive shape. Her last decent competition was Worlds 2018, where she placed 11th.

Hello, Canadian friends.

I just realized Corey is assigned to Cup of Austria. Does he have senior minimums, or has he been sent to secure them... like Ilia has for USA?

There's understandably a lot of attention on Olympic selection, but there is still 4CC and post-Olympic Worlds, which should provide opportunities for young and coming skaters like Corey and Ilia... although after what I've seen this season, I'm not ruling anyone out of Olympic selection just yet.

Actually, It was Worlds 2019 where she placed 11th. I think the rivalry between Kaetlyn and Gabby is motivation for both of them. Without Gabby, there is no world-class Kaetlyn and without Kaetlyn, there is no Gabby coming out of the blue to win Bronze at Worlds 2017. People may have criticized Gabby for her questionable attitude, which contrasts with Kaetlyn's composure. But it was that part of the rivalry that have made them become the best versions of themselves. As a result, after the retirement of the 2018 golden team, Gabby was a little bit lonely in her own field, because she was the only competitor from the old era while the rest of team Canada were all new to her.

Gabrielle had been Canada's #1 before, when Kaetlyn was out with injury (or struggling back from it), and did fine. I don't think Kaetlyn retiring had anything to do with her problems this quadrennial (if anything, she was probably happy to see Kaetlyn go because in theory that meant having the big stage to herself). The injury pileup was just too much.

He's making his senior debut.

I think the WTT collision/injury for Gabby was far more serious than anyone credits.

That was the backbreaker, from the look of it. The undiagnosed concussion at the US Classic was bad, but by nationals she was able to do a clean short program (something she hasn't managed with her planned content since) and had a pretty decent Worlds appearance. She seemed to be on her way back. By comparison, it's been two years since WTT and she's still not back to where she was at 2019 nationals, though she seems closer now than at any point since.

I feel badly for Soucisse and Firus this season. I think they have been skating better than they have in years, and yet it seems like the judges have totally dumped them, and Skate Canada doesn't seem to be fighting for them either. They are better skaters than the scores they've been getting, and I really like their free dance this season. I think their coaching move was absolutely the right decision in that respect. I hope they don't get discouraged. I wonder what they could do to try to get back into the good graces — consistent performances without major errors doesn't seem to be enough, since that's what they've been doing this season and it's not making a dent.

I really thought they'd be fighting for an Olympic spot, but I think it's pretty clear those are going to Gilles/Poirer, Fournier-Beaudry/Sorensen and Lajoie/Lagha (who've also been shafted by the judges this season. Finishing behind Eteri's daughter and partner? What utter corruption!)

The setbacks in ranking for Lajoie/Lagha in their last two competitions are curious to me. Their Rio free dance is fast, with some great lifts and choreography. Basically they are sprinting though a challenging number and they look great. Now, I know it's not all about speed but that means twice the work when you are fast *and* doing a difficult routine. And, they have the expression to handle the number. So I am missing what is lacking in their content to merit the results they had. Would need it technically broken down for me. (Le sigh...)

The immediate cause of Lajoie/Lagha finishing behind Davis/Smolkin at SCI was the former only got a level 2 on their combination spin, which is one of the levelled elements where you should always be getting a 4. If they had they’d have stayed ahead of them.

Now, more generally, the judges haven’t precisely been wild about them this season. At least part of that is undoubtedly that they aren’t really being prioritized by their coaches at the moment —Marie-France has a whole laundry list of things she needs to accomplish, and in their case their Olympic spot is pretty safe, which is the main thing that matters; whereas, for instance, she’s making a huge push to make sure Smart/Diaz get Spain’s one Olympic spot.

Thanks for your reply. So was their combination spin worth only a level 2? The whole concept of "the judges haven't been precisely wild about them this season" makes sense, it appears in their marks. But is that warranted?

Now, I have seen Davis/Smolkin skate in person and they are fast as well, with generally strong twizzles. Many fine qualities, no question. And agree about Marie-France, Smart/Diaz. Frankly, they look excellent as well.

It seems that Lajoie/Lagha are laying it down on the ice, though. Are the judges marking them down due to their age and older teams also skating? Because Davis is only 18 and isn't Smolkin 21-ish? So that possibility doesn't make sense.

She looks stongest she has looked since her down fall. She has work to do but there has been a huge improvement. Madeline still would over take her right now, Madeline look pretty good. She has a chance to get Canada 2 spots for next year. We will see how the season progresses. By nationals Gabby may have improved enough to take that top spot again. Its a guessing game all around though. IMO its going to be Madeline or Gabby. Alison and Emily I dont think really are in the equation.
