2021-22 Russian Women's Figure Skating

When was the last time Zhenya competed for Russia internationally? Perhaps a gp event in November of 2019? It's been almost 2 years right? Hmmmm.

A skater thats been on the Russian National team will likely have a more difficult time seeking release based on what Climb posted because they have been successful on the international stage and they have received considerable financial support for their career from the Russian Fed.

Additionally for Medvedeva who has had pretty bad injuries and has successful post-competition career options (shows, sponsorship and perhaps Russian Federation position if she wants to go that route) it would seem extremely foolish to upset the main audience for her post-competition career, potentially damage her non-skating options in Russia, to what - go to events to still place below the Russian girls and maybe do worse damage to her body that could prohibit her ability to do ice shows that she earns money doing? IMO, the cost benefit for Medvedeva doesn't make sense to me for her to attempt to change Feds.

Of course they can. Iliuschetchkina was held 3-4 years by the Russian Federation and so was Zagorski when she tried to free herself from the French federation, also 3-4 years. As the rules are, the federation can simply not release the skater (ever) and there is nothing the skater or ISU could do about it.

Zhenya is a past champion, she would never release herself from the federation or she would lost all her endorsement deals, her main audience, her skating shows, and her future career path in russia, whether it was to become a coach, a blogger, etc. I mean she is moving back to eteri bcs she is preparing her future.

What do you say makes sense. I just wanted to see her skate competitively again for her career ends.

... which means only two of Muravieva, Zakharova, Kulikova, Sadkova, Samodelkina, Zinina and Frolova will get a second spot. Berestovskaia most likely out of JGP altogether.

I guess they will swap her if she bombs in Kosice. Although honestly, I get why they want her to compete as much as possible : the potential is thourgh the roof and she needs as much experience as she can get.

My guess for the last two spots would be Zinina (almost a lock I would say) and Samodelkina (if she can get her **** together in time for JGP Russia).

Edit: I wish they would swap Frolova for someone else so that there could be six Russians in the final...

Wouldn't discount Murieva either. How many has Petrosyan got ?

Petrosyan has two (Kosice and Ljubljana). Akatieva and Zhilina also.

Nastyas transfer has been in the work for 1 year. Maybe that's why she did not really compete last year.

It's very surprising but I'm happy for Nastya. But I think she should have done this one year ago because she wasted an invaluable year of her career. Maria on the other hand is just coming into her own. I hope the move is good for her. Nastya has been coming into her own and she was 14.

Also following ladies figure skating since Tara and Michelle I have never seen a lady figure skater hit as hard by puberty as Nastya was. Daria too. Nastis has overcome a lot including mistakes from the Russian federation not giving her opportunities she earned and from her own mistakes and impetuousness and changing coaches 3 coaches in 3 years. Now she has a new start This is really a golden opportunity for her to compete in big events the next few years in her late teens and early twenties showing that great glide we know she has. The sport needs that.

Now if she and Maria could routinely score 220 points or more I don't think that federation would be so eager for them to leave. But both struggle to get over the 200 point mark so the Russian federation is thinking let them have their careers they won't hurt us anyway. I get it.

The question I have now is what happens to Ksenia, Nastya T and Little Liza to name 3? Have the leaving the Russian Federation floodgates opened?

Three of my four favourite junior girls (sans Frolova) are competing this week. None of my favourites are competing next week. It will be hard to root for anyone this week. Good luck to Adeliya, Maria and Sofia!

Based on the interview with Liza nugumanova on FS Gossips, I think she was invited to the test skates. I really hope so. She picked a "different" piece of music and won't divulge any secrets right now, but says she can't wait for people to see it. I too hope she'll get the host spot. Also, I hope people will find it in themselves to be kind to her in regards to the words they write about her pictures from her Dubai vacation.

Not necessarily - she hasn't competed internationally since the 2018-2019 season so I don't think she would have been able to go to Worlds which would have meant really no competitions last year, based on this interview she intended to compete in the Cup events but due to Covid exposures she had to quarantine that prevented her. So maybe she held off on switching countries so she maybe had some competition experience last year, but ended up not working out. I don't think she really 'lost' a year last year given the Covid situation, had it been a normal season then I would agree she lost a year of competition waiting to switch.
