2021 Worlds are still on

So I know a lot of you are tired of my post about cancelling Worlds, and I realize now that at this point, it won´t be cancelled. It will probably go ahead. Still I want to share some thoughts about how a I feel about the recent development.

I have a terrible feeling about this event. As it creeps nearer, and I watch the situation here in Norway, Sweden and other countries going into the third wave, it makes me very worried. How the mutation grows, how it´s more severe to younger people and how contagious it is.

The vaccine race is going slow, and there is another delivery problem now with the Az vaccine. So there will be further delays. Fully vaccinated are still months ahead.

The protocols not being sufficient, skaters traveling from all over the world for this event. Risking both Covid, maybe even risking the health and potentially being stuck in Sweden for weeks if they catch the virus.

So a lot of you have joked about that the once complaining about Worlds going ahead, will be present in threads watching and enjoying the skating once it goes ahead. I have never felt such a lack of excitement or joy before a figure skating event. WC and EC always felt like the highlight of the year, I would normally have butterflies in my stomach weeks before. Right now, there is not a bone in my body who wants to watch this event. I have recently enjoyed some skating events, I have watched and commented at the Russian national events. But this feels different. This is so much bigger. Other international events who worked fine it´s not a guarantee this one will turn out fine. And we all know Rostelecom didn´t turn out fine. Every event has to be considered in the light of the situation. And the situation has worsened a lot the recent weeks.

Thank you for explaining the situation in Scandinavia.

As I have previously posted, I do not think anyone who is worried about this event should be taunted. We are not scaredy-cats, we are not trying to rain on skaters' parades, and we are not hypocrites. We believe we are rightfully concerned in a situation where, legally and morally (for me) "assumption of the risk" matters less than safety.

This is how Jason Brown will be traveling to Stockholm:

Nathan Chen said in his teleconference:

“I have my anxieties about travel but I’m sure it will be OK. I’ll be double masking though the flights and praying I don’t get sick”

Once at worlds, Chen said he hopes everyone will be responsible about wearing masks and social distancing and that there are repercussions for those who don’t follow the rules.

So the skaters are not just rushing in blithely assuming the risks in any event.....

Right now, there is not a bone in my body who wants to watch this event.
Then don't watch. I can't say it's "worry" in my case, I'm just not going to be watching out of pure irritation, but if it means something to you, then you can absolutely not watch. That goes for everyone who shares your concern... It's just skating, so treat it as such. If more people were treating it as simply something disposable, then maybe the event wouldn't even be going on.

I probably won´t watch it either. It would mean purchasing Viaplay and under normal circumstances I would find the purchase worthy, but i´m not going to spend my money on this event. For sure.

I probably have my head full worrying about the whole Covid-situation anyway. It really feels a bit hopeless now. The situation is so worrying, numbers are increasing fast, hospitals even have patients born in the 90s (My age). The average patient in hospital now is around 40-60 years old. Only 2 patiens are above 70.

There is also an ongoing situation now with the 3 young healthy healthcare workers hospitalized after taking the Az-Vaccine here in Norway. They have very unusual and severe symptoms. A combination of blood clots, bleeding and low count of blood platelets. It´s a crazy combination because blood clots requires blood thinning medics, but due to low count of blood platelets the bleeding would be worsened. Something seems very odd with some of the batches from Az. Anyways, at this point i´m afraid Az will not be used here anymore, and vaccination will be even more delayed.

USFS fanzone posted the broadcast schedule of NBCSN and Peacock. Time listed is in Eastern Standard Time.

Thankfully I have NBCSN, actually decent Worlds coverage this year. Hopefully the times are accurate because there is some information on that page that doesn't match: NBCSN's coverage lists the ladies short coverage as live coverage, which presumably would mean that we are watching the event as it happens, however it starts 4 hours after the ladies short program is on Peacock premium, there are several events like that. So either the times are inaccurate or the 'live' designation on NBCSN is inaccurate.

Television

Wed., March 24 | Ladies Short | 9-11 a.m. | NBCSN (Live)
Thurs., March 25 | Pairs Short | 1:30-3 a.m. | NBCSN
Thurs., March 25 | Pairs Free | 3-5 p.m. | NBCSN (Live)
Thurs., March 25 | Men's Short | 5-7 p.m. | NBCSN
Fri., March 26 | Rhythm Dance | 10:30 p.m. -12:30 a.m. | NBCSN
Fri., March 26 | Ladies Free | 2:30-5 p.m. | NBCSN (Live)
Sat., March 27 | Men's Free | 2-4 p.m. | NBCSN
Sat., March 27 | Free Dance | 4-6 p.m. | NBCSN
Sat., March 27 | Ladies Free - Encore | 8 p.m. ET/7 p.m. CT/7 p.m. MT/6:30 p.m. PT | NBC
Sun., April 11 | Worlds Recap | 3 p.m. | NBC

Peacock Premium

Wed., March 24 | Ladies Short | 5 a.m.
Wed., March 24 | Pairs Short | 1:30 p.m.
Thurs., March 25 | Men's Short | 6 a.m.
Thurs., March 25 | Pairs Free | 1:10 p.m.
Fri., March 26 | Rhythm Dance | 5:45 a.m.
Fri., March 26 | Ladies Free | 1 p.m.
Sat., March 27 | Men's Free | 6 a.m.
Sat., March 27 | Free Dance | Noon

So either the times are inaccurate or the 'live' designation on NBCSN is inaccurate.
It just means NBCSN isn't showing all the skaters.

The entire ladies SP segment, including zamboni breaks, is 6-hours long. NBCSN is only airing 2 hours of it, and they will most likely omit someone's "live skate" to show Karen Chen's SP since she will skate earlier.

And that's the problem. You spent too much time thinking about this stuff and it makes you paranoid. I stopped following all this months ago. I still have to go to work every day and there's nothing i can do about it. I have a 3 shift work. When i come home i'm tired and just want to have a nice rest of the day. I have no time nor do i have the will to keep following news about Covid, i have better things to do. My life exists only from going to work and back home, i have no use of all these informations. I rather read a book or watch a movie instead

Jason is smart. One thing I have learned is to watch the flight attendants' hands....do they touch the overhead bins, then touch the edge of that glass of juice they hand you? Where you put your lips? Here is an interesting report on how SARS spreads on airliners in 2003. https://www.nejm.org/doi/pdf/10.1056/NEJMoa031349

Hey, you are overreacting. Which is normal these days. But sports events have been going on all winter and it has all been fine. Just relax, take a deep breath...

Sports events have not been going on *without incident* all winter. At least not the sports I watch.

I don't think that anyone needs to take a deep breath. Should I say that folks who think Worlds are going to go forward without a hitch, that everything is just hunky dory, because after all the athletes are assuming! the! risk!, should take a deep breath?

Fans have every right to be concerned.🤷‍♀️

Well, you wont see me laughing and joking and I understand your concerns as well as my own. Still, it is not my life...its theirs....because we now have vax in the US for us old folks.....there is ridiculas spring break partying in Florida right now....that scares me .....we have parents encouraging mask burning parties for kids in Idaho 50 miles away from me....that scares me....the death rate in Spokane is still 1.5 percent despite all old folks who want the jab getting at least the first dose.....that saddens me....many health care pros have decided to not get vaxed...that sadens and scares me....I will watch and enjoy and pray for the skater's safety. And pray they dont infect other old people like me who havent had the jab.

Yes, everyone has the right to be concerned. But let's get a grip of the situation instead of panicking.

The most common death cause for elderly people each winter is that they get the flu. We used to call that "death by natural causes". Well, apparently, not anymore.

This virus is nasty, yes, maybe we can compare it with the Spanish Flu 100 years ago. That one was at the beginning just a regular flu but later mutated into a deadly disease for young people, so the death toll was significant. But then again, we really can't compare that as 100 years ago they didn't have the medical support we have these days. And they didn't have any vaccines.

What I am saying is that let's be realistic about this, we have to live with it for now, of course we have to be careful, but there is no helping in painting the devil on the wall and cry wolf all the time.

Be careful people, but chill...worrying doesn't solve anything.

in my country, over half a million people have died in a year. I wasn’t alive during the Spanish flu, ;) but I am not a young person. This is unlike anything I have experienced in my lifetime.

(And never have I heard of someone who died of the flu categorized as dying of “natural causes”. Maybe that’s a difference in how countries deal with labeling causes of death?:scratch2: And sadly, COVID is not at all comparable to the seasonal flu. Not in mortality, and not in effects)

Given that background, I do not think that being concerned for the safety of skaters at Worlds is “crying wolf”. I agree no one should panic. ETA: I am retired so there are not many places I “need” to go. When I do, I go about my business with proper precautions. I don’t think about the virus day and night sometimes I even argue about figure skating )

I am not in a state of panic, but a state of concern (as are the skaters) that protocols be followed and enforced. And I hope that it will be sufficient. As I think we all do.

Yes, of course we are all concerned, we live in a difficult time. I am not a young person either, in fact I am in one of the risk groups as I have a lung disease.

But, I am also convinced that cancelling events and not doing things is the wrong way to go. As I said, we have to learn to live with this scary thing for now. After all, the only way to beat this is with vaccines and herd immunity,

And I would also like to point out, that isolation and keeping away from this virus will not work in the long run. Our immune systems just doesn't work like that. You have to be out and about to keep your immune system working. If you isolate yourself, your immune system will go down, and you would not want no have the immune system of a 16th century Native American that would die of a simple cold.

And yes, I am pretty sure that elderly dying of the flu was considered "natural causes" in your country too...it was just something that we never spoke about.

As I recently said the B117 variant is much more severe to younger people. One of the hospitals in Norway has per now 44 patients. 3 of them are in the 20s, the rest between 30-60s and 2 of them above 70.

It´s crazy to compare this even to the flu. I wasn´t even a bit concerned for the swine flue in 2010 and I worked at a nursing home back then. I´m not even going to argument on this one, there are so many proofs and statistics about the difference, i´m not going to bother.

Calling me paranoid during one of the most severe pandemic at all times is a bit harsh I think. I fully respect someone choosing not to watch the news to focus and get trough the days, but to call someone paranoid because they watch the news... well I don´t think that is fair. The problems caused by the pandemic doesn´t magically disappear because of that.

I can see how I sound very anxious in my previous post. I just wanted to state I also relax watching television, reading books, I sleep, I work (from home) and I eat well. I go to the store, I spend time with my family, I talk and meet my regular friends outside. It´s not like i´m lying down in my bed, and that I only can think about the virus and read the news.

My overall concern has grown stronger the last weeks because of the dominance of B117 here in Norway. People tend to look too Norway for a success story, because of the pandemic response, but right now the success is about to fade. Our numbers might see low for others, but our hospitals and ICU-capacity is a tragedy. I mentioned a few days ago that one of the hospitals have a full ICU, but I never mentioned what the capacity was. It only has only 11 ICU beds, and the hospital covers 600 000 inhabitants.

Watching recent figure skating events, I would say it´s a clear reminder of the pandemic and virus, because it affected som skaters and we have seen some of them clearly struggle and still not back in form. So as el_henry stated, the sports events going on this winter hasn´t all gone well. Of course success storys are brought up, but not are all.

If some of the skaters catch the virus during WC, either because of the travel or during the event, they can struggle for months and it may even set a stop for the career and in worst case it could affect them rest of the life. We don´t know. The risks are big. Someone mentioned before that lungs capacity is crucial to the skaters.

In a half year, if all goes well with the vaccine, the situation would look much more different - I would say it´s worth for the skaters to wait a half year to minimize the health risks. We should wait with such events until then. The season anyways are almost over, and there are skaters who never competed internationally this season.

So when the protocols allows skaters to compete with symptoms as long as they test negative, I think it´s crazy. Test can be done to early or give a false negative. A negative test alone is not safe enough. So apparently the once who already had covid recently doesn´t need to test either. How is that safe for the skaters?
