2022-23 Injuries and ills

Some (semi?) good news:

Yuma went back on the ice at the end of September after 2 months off, and managed to get his triples back withing five days but is struggling with 3As/quads. He's still dealing with a little bit of pain, but healing the injury completely is currently the priority and he will focus on adding in the more difficult technical elements later in the season. Finally, he wants to have a positive attitude no matter what happens this season.
🙏

Yuma Kagiyama will miss the GP series because he is still recovering from injuries (left talus fatigue bone injury and left fibula stress fracture) suffered at the end August 2022. He aims to return at the 2022 Japanese Nationals in December.

At least he's taking time off the ice (two months+) to heal, but man this season is rough 😭

Such a shame. I really thought Kagiyama and Higuchi could be major players this year. Especially the former. Hope he hasn't felt too much pressure to master the more difficult jumps, seeing how the likes of Malinin have been able to make progress in that department, and ended up injuring himself in that process.

Hmm, makes me wonder if JSF is or should be talking to their skaters about their off-season activities - they seem to do a lot of shows. Rika has been plagued with injuries and continues to do shows (yes her coach has eluded to it being to make money), Wakaba was injured prior to worlds and still did off-season shows, Yuma while it seems he was recently injured stress fractures are often from overworking.

I really appreciate these skaters taking the proper time and care of their bodies. I know it is tempting to try to skate through the pain so to speak but I want to see them in afew years still skating. I mean look at Evgenia M. So sad that her injuries have really curtailed her skating. I am concerned about Rika and Bradie andwonder whether they ever will really heal.

Mine too! A well-rounded skater with interesting programmes (and really nice in person). Hope he has a speedy recovery.
Hi! New poster here. I broke my collarbone in a cycling accident. After 6 weeks the bone had not healed at all and I had to have surgery and a metal plate inserted. I got the metal plate removed 18 months later. I wish him well but if he is recovered in time for Euros it will be some kind if miracle.

Thanks for the info -- I'm sorry you had to go through so much and hope you're now OK.

Also welcome to Golden Skate! Post long and post often!

from my personal experience of having broken just about every bone in my body... (not the collarbone though + touching wood) every fracture is its own animal... Some heal very fast and well, some don't... I hope Lucas has only a superficial fracture and that it will heal very fast, like healing for most young people does.

However, every single time, I was told that bone remains fragile months after its first healing period...and to be careful.. I have a hard time imagining someone jumping on the ice just after a few weeks...

Sometimes, it's possible to wear protective gear.. but I doubt it is for this type of injury and for a figure skater.
