Had a quick look at her TikTok and did a search in Japanese, but not much info. If you search in English, you get YouTube videos at Italian comps. She is obviously based there - maybe she has an Italian parent (doesn't look like it, but hard to tell) or her parents work in Italy?

Thanks for trying anyways :) Maybe we will know someday.
Being based is one thing, having citizenship another so that got me even more curious of course.

Yes, it is intriguing. Maybe she was born in Italy. Smart move to compete for Italy - she could easily be buried amongst all the crazy talent in Japan. Good luck to her!

Absolutely! We'll see what she is capable of soon :hap10:

edit 10/15: okay it was not her best day maybe

Congratulations to Shimada, Yoshida, and Nakai for making the JGPF! All three have 3As so it will be an interesting battle. Little Mao’s obviously the favorite, but she’s not as far ahead as it appears on paper. And in that JGPF field, she should be fourth in the second mark, maybe even fifth. With a minor mistake like she had in the SP in her second assignment and a fall on either her 4T and 3A and she can lose to any of her compatriots, if they skate clean.

I feel sorry for Chiba. I like her a lot and she was one measly jumping pass away from making the final. She’ll learn from this and tighten her nerves (hopefully). But I’m not too sad about this. An even 3-3 split between Japan and Korea is more fun. Let the games begin!

Yes, JGPF Women will be like a special "Japan Open"

Can't believe Mone and Ayumi didn't make the finals :'(, they are the first two alternates tho, I was pretty confident at least 4 japanese ladies would make the finals or even 5 but nerves really affect those girls, I hope they learn about this, still japanese junior nationals are going to be very interesting, and the 3 japanese girls in the finals have triple axels with Mao having a 4t as well so I bet they would make all the podium if they are clean

Skate Canada is this week, and to my knowlege, Rika hasn’t withdrawn. I have very mixed feelings about this.

On one hand, I’m excited to see her compete internationally. She’s the lady skater I enjoy watching the most and she’s come a long since her injury last year. In the summer of last year, she could barely do 2As, her spins were not good, and she looked as if she needed crutches to get off the ice. She’s still struggling a bit on the axels, but it’s nothing like last year. On the most part, her jumps looked effortless and her spins improved. There was only about two weeks between her Nationals qualifier and Japan Open and there were even more improvements in that short time too. So I’m excited to see where’s she at now.

But on the other hand, she’s still not completely healed and I’m worried about her aggravating her injury. Why is she competing? I just don’t see the point if her goal is to be in shape by Nationals, which is only 2 months away. What are her goals?

But on one foot, I look at the entries list for Skate Canada and think, “pfft, she could probably get on the podium with the same water-downed content she was doing before.”

But then on the other foot, I don’t want to see her scoring 120, placing 7th, and losing to skaters that absolutely had no chance in beating her in the past.

But then on the left shoulder, I think that if she doesn’t score a 120 and place 7th, then that means she’s not doing what she’s supposed to be doing to make sure she’s squared away by December.

But then on the right shoulder, I think that if she’s not landing more difficult content in late October, then how would she be ready by Nationals???

Let's just hope she feels better and improve her score, if she had the idea of retiring from the grand prix she would have been do it already but she hasn't and she competed at japan open so I don't think she's going to do it

She could just wait until competition day and not show up, right?
If she's in Canada right now they might be waiting as it's not a long trip. Or do we know she's still in Japan? Then they would have to leave now if she really wants to compete.

RETIRE?! Who said anything about retirement?!? That’s not what I’m thinking at all. And it is not what Rika’s thinking either or she wouldn’t be doing what she’s doing. No, she’s staging a comeback. From the look of her at Japan Open and the progress and, most importantly, her desire to return, I actually am confident that she’ll return to form. My issue is that her return to form should be next season, not in December.

Yeah she should come back next season, but it's her decision, she should be better oriented thou

Rika has been very clear on her social media that she has been following her doctor's advice. She has been limiting jumping and spending most of her time working on other elements. Rika wants to participate in Nationals. To do that, she needs a bye to Nationals. She needs to participate in the GP in order to get this bye.
Based on her jump content, she might very well come in last at this GP. But, clearly a medal at this event isn't her goal or motivation. Rika is a grown adult. She knows more about her health than we do. She is working with a coaching team that is known for being skater led. She certainly has a right to decide when and how she will return to competition.

Mai Mihara first after SP at Japan Western Regionals with unofficial PB of 74.07, landed all her jumps including 3Lz-3T!

(In Japanese)

It would be amazing if she and Kaori could go to Worlds together this year. Love them both!

Its my dream. :love2:

Rika Kihira was the highlight for me in skate canada. Her FS was beautiful ! And, Brian Orser, is really a great coach for her. He train her like a jewel like Yu-Na Kim. It's so good to see him working with her and reduce the technical element to heal her injury. He is a good coach for her.

It’s over! Congratulations to Watanabe for her gold medal in her Grand Prix debut!

Also, a huge congratulations must go to Rika, as well. She placed third - that’s right - third in the free skate and fifth overall with a 180+ total score. She also had the highest PCS for the long. I had her placing anywhere from third to seventh and she was actually much closer to third. As expected, she’s improved since Japan Open, even attempting a 3S+3T in the short and adding a 3Lo. No more troubles on the 2A. Her next assignment is in a month and I think she’ll be more comfortable with the 3-3 by then and perhaps she’ll add a 3F.

Well, I’m no longer worried about her competing in the GP circuit. I’m sure that as we get closer to late November that will change, but for now I’m just happy that she’s done well. (And relieved.)
