2022-23 Russian Local Events – Discussion

Wanted to watch Paramonova, but actually stopped for another junior woman and really liked her program. Her name was Varvara Kravchina from CSKA.

Sheesh, adding birds’ chirping in sound tracks gotta be one of the most annoying 90s (?) fashions. Gordeeva did great though 👏

I have a feeling Zhilina doesn’t like competing. She has these amazing spins but she never goes clean even when she skates w/o ultra-c. Such a far-too-classic choice of music too. I dunno, I start to feel bad for the girl. I wish she gets a break through.
No. She is probably the gifted kid to ever lace up skates, but I think she has just burned out-maybe there were too many expectations too early for her-but I don't see any fire or desire. Some of these little girls have half the talent, and yet, when they take to the ice you can see the fire and desire. You don't see any sense of enjoyment of performing, she seems to just be going through the motions, moving from one element to the next. I don't think her heart is in it anymore.

Yeah, or ever was… maybe that’s why she is so prone to small errors. 🤷‍♀️ If they could maybe re-package it as ‘lives in her own plane of existence’… but it’s like she doesn’t enjoy how perfect she is at what she does. However, that’s from outside, and outside look is deceptive.

Omg Alena landing things again! yes she went down on the 2A and the combo was under but just seeing her landing things makes me happy! The last season was so rough for her after the 20-21 breakout season. She is really a beautiful skater I would hate for her to get completely lost in the pack.

The first Kivsonova twin was adorable. Problems aside, I enjoyed that program. Great personality.

I'm so glad the stream is still up and rewind-able. 😺

Just quickly checked on my two remaining favourites in this comp. First impressions so far are that I hate the new school names with a passion. Just doesn't sound right when they announce them.

As for the skaters, loved Stolyarenko's new SP apart from the Valieva'esque starting moves which are a bit meh. I know it's a bad idea to get attached to novice skaters, especially if they look like they will grow up to be 2m tall, but Stolyarenko is quite special. Looking forward to seeing his development over the season. I wonder if he'll get a Junior CoRGP spot?

Andrusik performed much better than at the end of last season. Hopefully the growing pains are over. His music choice is as questionable as ever, and what's up with the flappy piece of fabric on the back of his shirt? But overall an enjoyable program with potential.

That's it, the rest will have to wait until later.

It’s those subtle rule changes. They will probably be plaguing most everyone the beginning of the season.

Kulikova was as good as ever…

Overall a very pleasant competition. Good luck to everyone in the free. I am working so if I can catch some of it in the evening 🤞for the stream to stay on for 24 hrs

I took a brief peep at the boys too (just a handful cos it's hard to find people in the stream on my phone).
Christmas is finally over on Kirill Andrusik's calendar 😆 I do like his shirt apart from the flappy stuff, it shows off his nice lines and posture. And yeah he always had small jumps (so, well done on learning 3A/4T), maybe he'll warm up a bit as the season progresses?
Jumps were a bummer for Mark Lukin :( I hope he recovers quickly from whatever kept him out of test skates!
Max Belyavskiy's performance was pretty similar to test skates, at least he's consistent 😅 The music gives me middle school nostalgia in a good way 😆 I'm looking forward to singing along to his LP too (there's something about Moskvich skaters and musicals...)

Looking forward to catching up with the other kids' skates tonight on a bigger screen!

I don't think it's that she's burned out or doesn't enjoy skating, rather, she has a problem with nerves and is perhaps under too much pressure. Honestly, to me, Nika has always been a bit of a nervous skater, and you could see it even back when she was on ice age kids, the sort of antsy expression she would have on her face at times when skating. From what I can tell, she seems to be a bit shy/introverted and has trouble emoting, so I don't think that helps.
Overall, she definitely seems like someone who would benefit from a sports psychologist

I also can't help but think that the constant flood of criticism towards basically anything related to her does not help this performance anxiety at all.
She gets a program she seems to enjoy performing but that is a bit out of the box (like last season's short)? People don't like it. She gets a classical program? People still don't like it. She goes for Ultra-C-elements and doesn't succeed on all? People question if she's even capable of doing the content she planned (despite training videos and previous competitions showing us that she is). She chooses to not go for any Ultra-C-elements and goes clean? People criticise that as well. Basically, no matter what she and her coaches do, people always seem to be against it, and aren't afraid to very publicly state their opinions about the matter, completely disregarding that she is/was a shy, nervous 14/13/12-year old.
