2022-23 Russian Local Events – Discussion

Honestly, I'm at a loss for words when it comes to Mark. He's a good skater, no doubt, and was one of the most talented skaters in his age bracket, but I don't know if his heart is still in it.

I hope his new coaches can find some way to rekindle his spark, as he has a lot of great qualities as a skater (as seen in the gorgeous 2A he did right at the start of the program), and it would be sad if he ended his career like this.

He lacks confidence in himself, until that comes back idk how much we can really expect from him. I really wish sport psychologist were more excepted in Russia.

His demeanor unfortunately reminds me a lot of Morisi's demeanor this season, and that worries me a lot as Morisi's most recent interview was incredibly difficult to read due to the amount of defeat and hopelessness he's clearly experiencing (even going as far as saying that he is only suffering in competitive skating nowadays and saying that he doesn't have any energy left).

Morisi was also surprisingly candid about the fact that he will not go to a psychologist, despite it being quite obvious to those who read the interview that it would probably be the best course of action, and I'm afraid that kind of mindset is incredibly common among Russian athletes.

Oh god, that was a complete disaster skate by Eva and Andrei :( She fell on both throws and on the Twist, and both of them fell on the death spiral (his pick slipped and he lost his grip on her as he fell, so she went flying). Certainly does not bode well for Jr Nationals.

Very unfortunate, as I was hopeful after seeing their improvement from their first to their second RusCup stage, but it seems like all their progress has just been reversed since then and they're doing even worse now than when they were first paired up.:scratch2:

Now, these two look better than at their Cup stages, though the throws are still a problem (but the 3LoTh has been an issue the whole season, as far as I remember), but at least their sbs jumps look easy and secure now. Huge twist at the beginning too, and just in general a better quality to their skating as a pair.

If they can get the throws under control for Jr Nats, they could score into the mid/high 180s.

It's always difficult for these teen skaters to go through puberty and grow taller. Some manage to stick it out and return stronger than ever (particularly the men) but unfortunately many aren't able to.

Hopefully, Ulyana will be in the first group.

Julia has just put a bit of pressure on the skaters above her, and deservedly goes into first with a 25 point lead.

I really think her now being coached by Dima Mikhailov and Sergei Alexeev has really benefitted her. Her jumps look a lot more solid (even if they can still lack height and rotation at times) and she doesn't seem as nervous at competitions anymore.

This is the best ive seen Zoya skate ever! Shame about the last pop lost 5 points on that, she definitely needs more competitions to get more experience and confidence. 2-3 competition this season is just not enough to build reputation with the judges and confidence.

Ohh eff it, I just watched Kirill's skate. Poor guy, it's not his season. At this point I hope he can go to Junior Nats without any expectations and pressure and just enjoy the competition.
And while I'm happy that so many young skaters are turning to Vika Butsaeva as a coach (welcome back to Moskvich Alexey Ef.!), Ilya, Andrei, and Kirill will always be the original Moskvich juniors for me and I feel for them when they have a disappointing performance.
