2022 Olympics: Men's Free Skate

Mikaela Shiffrin caught an edge on the slope and went down soon after coming out of the gate. She was going for her 3rd consecutive gold medal in the Giant Slalom. Many already call her the GOAT. Should I post the video since freak events are funny? I think not. I have too much respect for all she has been training for.
It happend again today in slalom. Poor dear, she's taking everything very very seriously. But it's not a freak event ... the snow is artificial and very dry. Very difficult to ski fast and very aggressive. And it's not her season anyway, she had very mixed results. Vlohova, the big favourite won today.
But skiers are used to different, sometimes very irregular and unfair circumstances.

Snow, wind, temperature ... Figure skaters have less things to deal with and that probably makes the mind game all the more difficult.

This is going to be so exciting! Fingers crossed for all of them!

The ROC (Russian Olympic Committee) is not a country and maybe shouldn't be competing in the team event.
While I certainly do not condone any country running a state-sponsored doping scheme, it would be completely unfair to the athletes themselves to be banned from competing. It wasn’t the athletes who cheated, particularly not this current generation of athletes. The team event would have been extremely boring without the breadth of talent and intrigue that Team Russia provided. There has to be some way to punish the Russian government without punishing the athletes, many of whom were teenagers and 20somethings, who did not know results were being manipulated. Besides, Russia was the only nation that really performed skates in all disciplines of the team event that were worthy of the Olympic gold medal. None of their athletes were a weak link and they are the only nation that can make that claim.

Old news, but thanks.

Do we have a schedule for the Mens LP on the west coast of the US? I keep looking on my DVR and they don't mention the Mens Free/Long Program. I don't want to miss it.:pray::pray:

Has Yuzu attempted the 4 ax in practice?
Yuzu attempted the 4 axel several times in practice last night, and took one very hard fall. Afterward he was favoring his right foot, and laced and relaced his right boot several times. He did not look happy as he unsuccessfully landed a few other jumps before the session was over. I hope he is ok.

Off topic, but solani's news re Schiffrin's slalom was only seven or eight hours "old" at the time of solani's post.

As an observation that even GOATs are not immune from one misfortune after another, solani's slalom post was an understandable and timely addition.

Thank you so much....

Do we know if Vince is symptomatic? 2 more of my friends positive today.... best wishes to Vince.
Found this on the People Magazine web site. I think this is from yesterday or the day before, so don't know if any changes have occurred since then.

In his appearance on Today, Zhou revealed he still has no COVID-19 symptoms.
"I was asymptomatic all up until the sudden positive test so it definitely did come as a shock," he said. "Right now I would say I am 99% asymptomatic still"

Now I am questioning if I even want to subject myself to continuing watching this Olympics; the psychological trauma and heartbreak may prove to be too much to witness. Maybe I should watch horror movies (my favorite genre) instead.

Others seem to have read something into my post that simply isn't there. I saw her interview with a journalist and she's taking things pretty badly, yes. A lot of self-doubt and it's coming out in her skiing after the first event. The snow is man-made and icy, so much so, I could hear the hard crack when the edge of the ski caught the ice. If you want to discuss Mikaela further in a different thread I don't have a problem with that, but this is not the thread for it.

I was watching Yusuru practice just now. An someone explain why Brian is not by his side? Is he still his coach. Right now, looks like he needs that support, what Moskvina does with her pairs, etc
I read somewhere that it was Yuzuru's request to be alone rinkside and at the kiss&cry. He was alone during nationals (because of covid) and is superstitious and wanted to have a repeated routine. Perhaps it extends during practise. Makes sense with how he seems to repeat the exact same movements every time he heads out to skate

No need to discuss Mikaela further, I didn't mention her first anyway.
I only wanted to make the point, that any athlete, great or mediocre, has to deal with external circumstances at some point. And those can be unfair (altough I think they weren't). Even the greatest athletes are sometimes not able to adapt in time. (That's the only reason why I mentioned Mikaela's 2nd drop out.)
We'll see wether Hanyu is able to adapt soon enough. It will be too late most likely, but he seems to be the kind of athlete, who is satisfied with himself when he's able to prove himself. And he has every chance to do that.

I'm getting really excited ... I won't be able to sleep before the event!

Going to be in bed when this starts, so this is a placeholder.

Men's FS starts in 4 hours from now.

I have a feeling most of us are a little shaken and shocked over the events of the past eight or so hours, so I'd like to request that we avoid speaking of that thing and instead try and enjoy a few hours of skating. No wuzrobbing or complaints about politicking or skaters, just a fun and relaxing (well as relaxing a men's comp can be) event.:giggle:

And what about tests? Is he still positive?

I just hope for all the athletes that played fairly that these games don't have a big * in the record books. They have nothing to do with the circumstances that have arisen.
