2022 Olympics: Men's Free Skate

Brown being 6th in results says everything about the level of the whole men´s event :(. Still, there were a few really enjoyable freeskate performances, especially that from Cha, such beauty and elegance, WOW... A pity about the fall! Also Yuma was very enjoyable, in my opinion.

I can understand that for Hanyu a medal was not that important and he wanted to make history. Fortunately there was no visible injury.

Congratulations to the medalists!

It says everything about Yuzuru that he never let up his performance. That is a stunning program.
The back half was splendid. Before his quads were done was not as good as he can/has performed that.

I looked at his choreo sequence being like - wtf was that energy beforehand?! I think he was over it after the botched quad axel. But he still did many things well which he should be super pleased and proud of.

I hope [Nathan] continues but he’s hit the echelon of men’s skating.
Nathan is certainly young enough to continue, but I'm pretty sure that he's going to go to Yale full time to finish his degree. Maybe he'll be able to finish and graduate in two years, and then think about whether he wants to come back. Over that time, I think he would need to keep up his training and skating in shows to stay sharp. I think Nathan is looking forward to getting back to Yale.

It was really a good decision for Nathan to go to school while he continued to skate, at least for the time he did it (I believe for two years -- the second year on Zoom due to the pandemic lockdown). So, maybe he has enough credits to get his degree in two years, and maybe come back. Who knows. It's also the case that Nathan might feel he's achieved all that he wants to achieve competitively, and he wants to leave the field to the younger guys coming up. If that's the case, I will miss Nathan dearly.

Someone said that Jason plans to continue for at least another year or so. I would love that if he did.

He just didn't have the momentum through the Euler to do the 3F. Surprised he didn't do a 2F at least but at that point he had already racked up enough points.

I understand the lack of momentum but he has done that flip so many times… I can’t imagine it must have been anything other than a hole in the ice.

It was NOT a hole in the ice. The commentators said that Nathan came up on his toe a bit in his blade during the euler, which killed speed and momentum. As @draqq noted, it was about loss of momentum. Nathan didn't have enough momentum to get high enough, which may have surprised him, so he could only manage the single. He might have been excited and relieved at the same time going into that last combo, which made him slightly off in terms of the focus needed to be perfect. We expect perfection from him, but he's human. Also, Nathan did not say there was anything wrong with the ice. He acknowledged having made a mistake when he spoke to Andrea Joyce after his performance. Still, he was relieved and happy. He knew that he'd done enough, and as it turned out, he'd done more than enough.

It was grand to see Nathan so excited and happy after his performance. It was a performance four years in the making, actually many more years in the making, ever since he was three-years-old, watching the Salt Lake City Olympics. Sigh --- time flies ✈️

I think I saw Nathan performed much better before, but that was still pretty exciting performance and I m very glad that he changed his costume.
Yuma was just a joy to watch, Sholero was messy,
Jun was so beautiful except that hard fall on the toe and the step out. Like I thought that Jurandot was boring, but that was just dreamy. Though I think the cameramen could have filmed the ina bauer better.
I think nerves got to all of them tonight. The programs were pretty diverse tonight, enjoyed that aspect. Loved the Rocketman program. It was fun and made me smile. I’ve never seen Nathan so happy and carefree. He deserved to be.

The champ was able to hold it together. He is a pro, especially because he was able to follow the competition, very impressive. He obviously knew that he didn't have to take any risk after the Euler and he's shown before that he can change his jump content on the fly. And I really like that program.
Team Japan seemed nervous, but still great efforts from all of them. Altough I would have had Hanyu in 3rd, Uno made too many technical errors imo.
