2023-2024 Russian Nationals Jumping Championships

Petya has a relatively easy way to the final.

That 1st group could really go anyway all 4 have a decent shot here.

2nd group I think if Lev clears Vlad he will beat Gleb/Makar and go through to the final.
The skater with the worse result in a pair performs earlier. This will surely have a strong influence on the result.

Men's bracket

2 Gumennik
11 Kolesnikov

Lazarev - Dikidzhi is... a duel of two skaters I would have had among the absolute favourites.
Gumennik seems to have an easy way to the final. But that might depend on Ternovksii who I know nothing about but he looked strong today.

I think among the girls Petrosyan, Bazyliuk, Koystyleva and Prineva looked very convincing and I would give all of them a real shot.

Can't see anyone but M/G win in pairs.

I think Bazyluk just because she has more stability than Petrosian, but if Petrosian lands it will be no contest.
Obvious favourite is Petrosyan (50% chance to win), then Bazyliuk (25%), Kostyleva (15%), Muravieva (5%) and Prinieva (5%).

What was up with Prineva? Her lutz looked great before. I'm really surprised to see her with equal odds to Mura with just a 3A.

Guess I should watch the replay because I'm also surprised to see most stating Petrosian as a clear favourite with no lutz.

Did we see if Petrosian regained her 3A? I think with our girls all peaking so late for various reasons Spartakiad will be event of the year.

Petrosian was super impressive. She looked like skater from another planet amongst those talented girls.

Petrosian did a 4F which is the second most expensive quad (barring the 4A). Her 4F+3T was worth 15.20 in BV and she only needed 1 attempt each while majority needed several attempts including the rising jumping star Margarita. Right now Adeliia is the most fierce and confident so far. She only needed 20 seconds and looked like an actual senior today amongst a sea of highly skilled kids (despite also being a kid at 16).

About her 3A....
Petrosian noticeably grew (not by too much) and she is even struggling with her +2A combos at times (not always, but I do catch it). I don't think the 3A is coming back as easily or as smoothly as last season. Right now her 2A landings have become so tight to the point that she stopped doing "quad + 2A" combos (it failed her in one of the GPs. That was a shock too and ruined what should have been a clean quad combo) and settled for a 4T+2T instead at Rus Nats. She did have a comeback with a backloaded 3Lz+2A+2A at Nats since she's so strong but the landings on her 2A aren't even what they used to be. It used to be so much smoother and easier the last few seasons. I think she must adjust her axels to her newfound growth (not a major growth like Muravieva or Samodelkina but she visibly looks older as well as taller even in comparison to last season). I hope she gets that 3A stabilized by next season if it doesn't happen by Spartakiad.

Prineva has a quad lutz and did a gorgeous 4Lz + 3T for 15.70 points in BV but she messed up her solo jumps with poor 4F attempts. Should have went for a clean 3F with some GOE boost instead.

Muravieva did poorly today. Failed all her 3A attempts (surprising she's so high up really), but very nice 3Lz + 3T. Prineva should have been even higher in my opinion but those solo 4F fails really got her.

It shows risking a shaky jump truly isn't worth it and that having more than one stable enough quad is very beneficial as this was the case for #1 (Adeliia) and #2 (Margarita). Also Margarita is the only one who's stabilized 3A, 4T, and 4S so if 3 different jump types were required instead of two (two solos and one combo) I think Margarita would be #1 since Adeliia (to my knowledge) did not re-stabilize that 3A and I don't think she would attempt her shaky 4Lo or 4S.

Prineva should stay away from the flip in general (both, as far as possible, from the triple and the quad), because her Flip edge is very clearly outside and is quite often deserving of e calls, which is what happened here.

(No, let's not get into why her 3Fs aren't getting calls at other competitions when skaters with much flatter (or even inside edges) are getting them, that won't help).

There are also a lot of men who should stay away from the flip because of the calls, but they still attempt it. By the way, one them isn't taking part in this competition. I hope he is healthy.

The thing is, I understand that someone like Kaori can't really easily avoid doing a 3Lz, but Alena (and yes, a lot of men too) really doesn't need to go through the trouble of training for a 4F when an edge call could severely decrease the value of it. Lots of risk for very little reward.

It would be better to try a different quad if she really has to have two, or just stick to the 4Lz and get that to be bomb-proof. Avoiding the 3F is probably not possible, but the edge on her triple is better than on her quad, she's more likely to "get away" with "just" a ! call and not an e call.

Petrosian's costume is so pretty. Dark Blue glitter!

I like that they've added costumes and music. I think past years there was basically no individual music and no costumes, they just wore training clothes. It doesn't have to be a literal program for music and costumes to add some spice.
I like the little sound effects in the music too lol. The dings and such for "success" and the blooper music for "falls" or "fails". It's kinda "insult to injury" by hitting the fail music when they fall, but its rather fun as an audience. The past years I liked, but it was just "too quiet" to be a lot of fun. They finally figured out how to present it this year.

Holy Moly. It is awesome to see so many girls doing 4S and 4T or attempting it. Quads no longer seem "rare" to me. At least for the quads that have the same amount of rotation as 3A. If the Japanese, Koreans, Americans aren't trying to get their juniors ready, then I can see why they want to keep Russians banned for the next 10 years. They'll never win internationals medals ever again if they add Russians back in at this rate.

There were several girls that had 2S/2T, so I assume they were going for 4S/4T and it didn't work out. So even the people who didn't show quads were going for them.

Petrosian - 4F+3T, 4T

Ponteleenko - 4T< (fall), 4T clean (but not scored?)

Maria Mazur - 4T (falls)

Gordeeva - 4S

Bazylyuk - 4T, 4S+3T, 4S+3T repeated? (but not scored)

Alena Zhilini - 4T<
*sigh* as unreliable as her sister.

Kira Trofimova - 4T<< (painful fall but seems OK)

Angelina Palagina - 3A twice, hands down on both but stay up

Arina Kalugina - 4T, 4S<

Anastasia Utkina - 4T

Muravieva - 3A (fall), then 1A

Kamilla Nelyubova - 4Lz<< (my! she is ambitious!)

Prineva - 4Lz+3T, 4F(fall) - NICE!

Milana Lebedeva - 4S, 4S<<

Varvara Kravchina - 4T (falls)

Elena Kostyleva - 4S

Diana Milto, 4S<, 4S<<

I love that they put Muravieva vs Prineva because they are such beautiful artists on the ice with very soft knees. Their glide flows like butter. Too bad this isn't a skating skills comp. I hope Muravieva and Prineva bring their A-Game though Prineva's lutz is just too expensive if she can manage to land it clean. I wish Mura had her more challenging 4S stabilized.

Agreed. The sound effects added to the event here and it seems these tournaments are improving year after year. I hope we get to see majority of these ladies still with quads and/or 3A by their senior season though (they would be 16 or 17 by then I think). It's exciting seeing so many novices and juniors steadily pushing the level of tech. Even if team tutberidze skaters weren't here they inspired the level to be so high in Russia so now it's truly a fight amongst all the camps with their own ultra-c jumpers. Outside of Adele (teamtut) and Margarita (teamtut) we still have Elena (novice), Alena (junior), and Maria (junior) in the top six all from different coaches who successful jumped at least one quad today.

I liked how all the skaters waited by the boards for their scores, while Kostyleva glided gracefully in the centre of the rink.
Showgirl!

Hi there guys!
It was great competition so far - and the whole play off system of main tournament with pairs of rivals competing with each other is brilliant idea making rather detached from fighting types of sport - figure skating - into something much more closer to more common adrenaline-filled sport event everybody loves so much like soccer or tennis match. Which wasn't the case with first examples of jumping tournaments long time ago if I remember correctly - which probably was what buried it.
I wonder whether ISU really consider to implement jumping tournaments again - with Russian rules now - in their official events? And if not - maybe somebody would make a petition or suggestion to them in some kind of a fans letter? It would be extremely interesting to watch similar event on international arena with skating stars everybody knows about. And even more so if it would make its place as new Olympic discipline with separate set of medals for national team and individual events! I remember there were times people were complaining about lack of Olympic medals in figure skating or about its too high subjectivity as reputational judged sport. With this event both these concerns will be fixed as well as bringing more casual jumping types sports fans to figure skating as well ^^

P.S.: I know that ISU nowadays is more focused on making fs even more distant from objective type of sport with plans to make new artistic discipline or single dance discipline. But one can still have a hope, right?

When it was Eteri skaters jumping quads the implication was that something outside rules or ethics was being done to achieve this, but the argument that women need to cheat to jump quads is basically dead now. It's technique more than anything and the Eteri camp figured it out first. Other camps have caught up, internationally even a 20 year old has a quad. Are all these people cheating?

What the Eteri camp has always lacked are skaters with a stable long term 3A, which theoretically should be an easier jump than a quad. It seems other camps in Russia and internationally do a better job with 3A technique, because if someone has the physical capability to jump a quad they are the capacity to jump a 3A.

These juniors will lose most of these quads by the time they are 18/19, but by having competency in multiple quads as juniors the hope will be they maintain at least one quad as a senior because that will be enough in senior competition. Plus, the hope will be some of them can win major events in their first senior year when they maybe still have their full arsenal of quads.

It's such a shame that at international level the quota system is so discriminatory towards the leading nations like Russia and Japan that so many skaters will end up being lost to shows if they can't get podiums in Russia such is the strength of the competition.
