Kevin Reynolds is the new Shin Amano. Super strict tech panel for women at challenge. Many got dinged. However, it's good that our home events do not have inflated scores :)

With 33 senior women competing and only 17 moving to Nationals, it will be quite intense tomorrow. You gotta watch this. :)

I wonder if Kevin’s strict calling has anything to do with how frequently he himself was called for < during his skating career.

that was my original thought too :) but you know, considering the little bit we know about him and his persona, (from interviews and commenting events) Kevin is super smart and a class act... so I would say he is just very diligent and likes work well-done. It's been quite consistent too. The big jumpers who rotate fully don't get in trouble ;)

Didn’t mean to be snarky 😊 - like you it was just the first thing that popped into my mind. But I’m sure you’re right. I know he’s super smart and have also heard that he’s great as a commentator, so the skating world is lucky to have him. For some reason I thought he was going to medical school but I guess I was mistaken.

Don't worry... it's a fact that he's URed A LOT.

Indeed

No idea about that... I think he was studying at UBC but I don't know what his major was.

According to wikipedia

"Reynolds was home schooled to accommodate his training schedule.[6] He graduated from the University of British Columbia, in international relations, with a minor in Japanese Language and Culture in May 2019.[7] He speaks three languages: English, Japanese and French.[4] In December 2016 he passed the N2 level of Japanese-Language Proficiency Test,[8] the second-hardest difficulty level and is organized by the Japan Foundation and Japan Educational Exchanges and Services."

" At the 2023 Canadian National Championships Reynolds revealed that he was working on his Master's degree in Public Administration."

Challenge is behind us.
Nationals schedule is up. Entries will be posted soon enough. It is really only in the women disciplines (junior and senior) that multiple skaters are discarded after Challenge.

We have surprise winners in both the pairs and women fields today.

Emy Carignan and Bryan Pierro took the win over Caidence and Raine who did so well last year at nationals.

Fiona and Gabriel took silver. They skated more than well enough for a new team.

In women, Fée Ann Landry (junior eligible from Next Gen) won Challenge after placing first in both the SP and LP. Her big secure jumps pleased the TP. TP were quite harsh on everyone with queues and carrots and double carrots !

Fée Ann cannot be sent anywhere as she never competed internationally in senior so she doesn't have tech minimums for 4CC.

Kaiya finished 2nd, Hetty 3rd and another junior age eligible skater Uliana, finished 4th.

In 5th we got Audréanne Foster, who also has never been sent internationally, so we need to get to 6th place before we find another skater other than Kaiya who could go to 4CC. (with Maddie)

Fiona finished 9th. Justine 10th. So I'd assume that Skate Canada will pick Maddie, Kaiya and Sara-Maude for 4CC.

Dance and pairs should be the top 3 teams (none of them at Challenge)

Men is tricky... 4-5 guys could make a case for themselves. I hope Conrad is selected as Challenge winner.

Also.. my junior discovery : Liam Schmidt. I quite liked him... He is not unknown to hardcore fans I guess because he is former National champion in pre-novice and bronze medal winner in novice... but I didn't know about him until challenge. I liked his skating quite a lot :) he reminded my of Jo and Patrick a bit... well apparently his idol is Chan :) He seems to already have knee issues from growing and also had a ball joint fracture at some point so let's hope his body holds up.

makes sense your picks for 4CC - I am sure we will see some spring competitions for skaters if they also repeat at Nationals. Youth Olympics will be interesting - might see Fee Ann, Hetty or Uliana sent as Lulu is too young.

Fee Ann was born in May 2005, so she's not eligible for YOG for age reason (and is in her last season of junior eligibility too.) Not sure about Uliana's citizenship status, so it may end up being Hetty. Hetty had the highest score of the Canadian women on the JGP, so I'd go with her after her performance here.

The selection criteria says that the entries will be announced tomorrow, so we'll find out soon :)

With Kevin marking so hard here the skaters who scored well should be really happy cause they know that with an easier scoring panel they could score even higher. Plus they are getting scored more like they would internationally.

Why not Kaiya to YOG? Kaiya is age eligible too. SC may like to send her out again.

Kaiya may want to concentrate on competing as a senior internationally and go for 4CC instead. She has the second highest SB of the senior women so far and right now is the #2 Canadian women internationally. SCI went rough, but that's part of learning how to compete at this level. 4CC would be a more valuable experience for her than YOG in the long-term.

But then I could be all wrong and she ends up assigned to YOG instead tomorrow 🙃

I don't think Kaiya has competed as a junior at all this year? Given the timing compared to your nationals, it might not be the best point to start rehearsing two programmes. Looking at her layout from Skate Canada, her short programme is okay for juniors (she has the solo lutz and the flying sit spin in) but her free programme would need some adapting.

Kaiya may be going to junior worlds... So who knows? Last year, jw assigned skaters didn't do 4cc...so it may be like that this year too...

Do you have 2 spots at junior worlds, or just one?
As mentioned above, two. I would add that often, Skate Canada will assign the national junior champion plus an age eligible competitive skater when there is more than one spot.. Like Wesley has done last year... If I were Skate Canada, I would send him to jw again this year and three other skaters at 4cc.. to spread spots around...
