2023-24 Programs by Discipline

The very well known version... i would say there are 3...buckley, kd lang and the original... but for skating, probably the first one.... that will make me miss you know who.
Folks in Japan said definitely not those three. The posts I've seen have pointed to the Thomas Feiner version, which I can actually get behind. It's maybe not my first choice for him to skate to, but I can absolutely see him going full out on this.

there is one new version of Hallelujah every day. :) hard to keep track... Listening to Feiner's version as we speak as nope... didn't know it..

he has a nice voice but oh well.. i hate the arrangement... it takes away the essence of the piece and turns it into so much darker... oh well... I like DV enough to watch him without muting his music... thankfully, it's just a SP.

You know... if he wanted to do Thomas Feiner... why now Dreamers ? Or any other original song... HA! Thanks to DV, i am discovering an artist I didn't know. I like his original stuff much better than Hallelujah.

Hallelujah is one of the most unoriginal choices of course, but Deniss talking about it sounds like he has some very personal connection to the song - if that is indeed so, I'll accept it. Might also explain why he chooses a specific version.

Coldplay - a no go. But it's Matteo, so I'll accept it, too. Maybe he can do something with it.

But it seems we need to create a database with possible songs for the skaters... they don't seem to know where to look for music. :p:angry:

I hear you! I read somewhere that when a skater works with Shae-Lynn for choreography, she usually picks the music with a skater in mind. So, this song must have somehow touched him and he agreed to it. But I agree, there are many others out there that I would have liked to see him skate to!

I like this song. Thanks for sharing

They do need our help. Nobody ever uses Sleeping Beauty anymore.

Better Hallelujah than Coldplay. Coldplay, the kings of blandness. Please someone sit down with Matteo and play him some examples of real rock music...
i couldn't have said better. some real rock maybe (so no Maneskin)
i think Matteo would do so well with classical music HA!
i agree

to think that they just need to ask ME

This Week in Skating podcast announced in their latest episode that Jim Peterson emailed them info on Plazas/ Fernandez's pairs SP music. It's to Rachmaninoff's Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini, choreo by Evora & Peterson. P/F's Top Gun fp music was already announced, which Jim & Amanda also choreographed. 👍

But I liked Matteo's Maneskin program.:slink:

Not too thrilled with Coldplay though.

I also really liked the Maneskin program, although I wasn't into the music itself. But I think the edit was very good, so was the choreo, and he was just able to sell that program despite the problems which showed in the jumps.

Matteo and his choreographer made the program good, Maneskin per se are as rock as a boyband popped out from a talent show. Coldplay in my opinion are one of the most overrated bands of all times. before somebody feels their feathers ruffled there's nothing wrong in liking bland stuff, i'm not judging you because of this  (or i'm trying not to )

Going off topic, but related to an earlier discussion and some might find it interesting.

Skaters, at least American skaters considering American songs, know when a song is inappropriate. This music related podcast talks with Jason regarding music choices, skating and otherwise. Jason says he would sometimes see a program and wonder "Does that skater know what that song is about"?

He also says pick your training mates well, because you will be hearing their music all day too. ;)

Thank you for posting this! This concept is what I was trying to get across earlier in the thread, we just know when somethings not appropriate lol.

I don't think it's that easy - I get that people might not understand the full meaning of a song that's not written in their native language, but it's also a question of personal morals, upbringing and culture. What you are used to, what you consider appropriate.

In Europe Americans are often considered pretty prude -not every single one and of course that differs a lot from each European country to the next one and again depends a lot on the person. But what's not okay in a Hollywood movie is totally fine in a mainstream European one. That's just an example. What I consider appropriate, what my mother does, what my grandma or my son does, differs a lot. And even among people the same age as me it might differ a lot. We recently had a huge hit here in Germany, which was played at fairs (the Oktoberfest kind) a lot. It's about the female owner of a brothel. (It's simply a very stupid song imo.) There was a huge discussion whether this is okay to be played at events which are often attended by families/children, and I don't think there was a general consensus on it.
Sure, there are some songs that just "cross the line"... but I think most fall into a category of "not so easily decided".

whole post

Thank you for your thoughts. I have never heard Jason Brown called a prude before, but there is always a first time:laugh:

I would like to propose another way to look at it: many of these tunes really *are* that inappropriate, but if English is not one's native language, it is difficult to understand just how inappropriate they are. (And I will say again, I am in total awe of anyone posting here and sharing their thoughts where English is not their native language. Respect

I don't know anyone who thinks "Billie Jean" is inappropriate, or even Roxanne (turning the red light on is a warhorse, but not inappropriate).

But "Hey Big Spender, I don't pop my cork for every guy I see, spend a little time with me". For a 15 year old. Uh, no.

and He's a one stop shop, makes the panties drop Makes the cherry pop He's a sweet talkin' sugar coated candy man
Maybe non Anglophones don't realize just how explicit that is to an Anglophone?

The question about inappropriate is: if you want to skate a program to a song about losing your virginity, and you're an adult, fine and dandy, go for it. And give me some indication that you realize that's what the song is about, rather than "It has a good beat, you can dance to it, I'll give it an 85" (inside joke for Americans of a certain age ;) )

reader3 already PMd me... apparently some Americans feel attacked by me saying they are often considered "prude" in Europe - which is just the way it is, and not an attack.

And I didn't mean (or say) Jason Brown; I said I understand that some things are different if you hear them in your mother tongue.
I just challenge the view that there is a general, worldwide consensus of everyone on what is "appropriate", that everyone would agree on if they only understood it in full.

Personally I consider Roxanne and Billie Jean inappropriate for a minor. Some things the 15 year olds here listen to are way more explicit, but if a skater picked that it would be more okay for me because I would think that's just what they and their friends listen to in private. Roxanne and Billie Jean always feel like a coach/choreographer picked it for them/helped them to pick it, which makes it even more awkward for me.

Private dancer - I looked up the lyrics again to see if I didn't miss something. Nah - there are many songs I think I don't actually get, but private dancer? Looks fine to me. There's way more explicit and "amoral" things played on the public radio here. For an adult I consider it fine. But I am acknowledging that for some it might not be.
