2023-24 Programs by Discipline

Wild is the Wind is a beautiful song, and Nina Simone is a tremendous musician and performer but... IMO, Nina Simone's version just is not suited for figure skating and especially not Kaori's style... Kaori flies across the ice, why give her a slow burn, moody, contemplative blues piece? She could be skating to anything in that first half... and a jarring transition to Feelin Good.

I know we usually say "use the original" so preparing for some tomatoes here but... I actually think David Bowie's cover of Wild Is The Wind would be much, much better to skate to. Just maybe not for Kaori... Hubbell & Donohue would've done an amazing job, I can imagine Chock & Bates knocking it out of the park with the right cut and choreo... maybe Fournier-Beaudry/Sorensen, Shoma Uno, Kevin Aymoz, or even Amber Glenn). For Kaori, I'd love to see something like symphonic metal or a orchestral film score that emphasizes her power and speed instead of fighting against it. I also loved last year's Janet Jackson SP (and kinda hated the Sia FS so honestly, I was braced for worse when I heard Marie-France was choreographing for Kaori again... speaking of unpopular opinions ;)) so it's not that I don't think Kaori is artistic or that she shouldn't be pushing herself as a performer, just... this is so out of her wheelhouse in a bad way, and I'm not sure I can think of any currently competing skater who could make this program work as it is now.
I've actually seen people other places say that she's skating to Lauryn Hill, not Nina Simone, and that's also what I got on Shazam.

I don't want to sound mean because I really do like Ilia and his skating a lot...I don't think Latin is the way to go. I feel bad for not liking the choice, but sometimes, you disagree with stuff your favorite athlete, sports team, singer, or band does. And that's the case right now.
You don't have to like everything your favorite skater chooses.

For example, those of us who usually like Deniss Vasiljevs will have to cope this year.

I'm also reminded of Nathan's short-lived Olympic season LP before he reprised Rocket Man. That was awful.

Bonus content: Here's a very young Ilia doing a Latin program:

I think Ilia can do a Latin program, one just wonders if it has to be Malaguena. But hey, it's not Hallelujah, so...

Has anybody heard anything from Kevin? With all these warhorses I am fearing the worst now.

I always have to go back to respecting and liking Rohene Ward who goes out of his way to find interesting music choices that present the skater in the best light. I would love to have Rohene get a hold of Ilia and really choreography a program that lets him shine beyond the jumps.

A lot people didn't seem to like Nathan's initial Olympic season fp. I enjoyed the mix of classical and rap. Nathan has a great deal of range artistically, in addition to varying tastes in music, which is a good thing. His original Nemesis short program introduced a lot of fans to Benjamin Clementine's oeuvre. It was certainly my introduction to Clementine, for which I thank Nathan. There was no program Nathan did that I could ever view as 'awful.' 😳

Nathan or whoever advised him re the second half of the Olympic season, was certainly right about going back to the livelier, more crowd-pleasing programs he never got to perform at Worlds 2020, due to COVID cancellation.

You're correct - she did it as her FS in the 2000-2001 season: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PY-T6fpdWwA
Thx for sharing. I can see Ilia's facial resemblance to his mother looking back at this 'blast from the past.' Tatiana had some skills, plus a lot of desire and determination, which helped her competitively. Obviously, Ilia surpasses both of his parents in his amazing jumping abilities. He still has time for further growth aesthetically.

Even turning 19 soon, that's still very young in terms of overall maturity. Every individual matures at their own rate in any case, based on background and personal experiences.

I bow to no man in my admiration for Nathan Chen, both as an athlete and (as far as I can tell) a person.

But I stand by my assessment of that Mozart program.

Florent Amodio has choreographed the following:

Arlet Levandi EST

SP: "Mauvaise journée" by Stromae

Yae-Mia Neira CHL
FS: "Démons" by Angèle ft. Damso

I kinda like the preview of Arlet's program. The other, not as much, but we'll see how it goes.

I wonder if you will open a page to discuss the new programs of Russian figure skaters for the 2023/24 season?Just an entertaining story, isn't it?)🙏👍⚡

Why would the Russian figure skaters' new programs be discussed separately? They were listed with the general programs list last year:

If you have new competitive programs for skaters to be listed, please list them here.
