2024-26 Italian Figure Skating

So Sarina has changed coaches... Wonder if Noemi's bio just isn't updated or if they actually are now coached by two different teams. 🤔
I checked Sarina's bio on Wayback Machine. She was under Linda van Troyen, Sindra Kriisa, Lorenzo Magri on the capture on October 7, 2024. The capture on November 6, 2024 has her changing to Gheorghe Chiper. That looks to be the timeframe for when she changed coaches.

It's nice that the Italian Fed is revamping its website (though I didn't think it was absolutely necessary), but if they have to do it while there's a competition actively going on, can they at least make sure that all the links work? 😭

Oh, drat!

I always loved the FISG because they have results pages going back donkey's years. And the addresses always remained the same. So it was always easy to find them and link to them in Fan Fests.

And now they go and change the addresses.

And there I was thinking nobody could change their website in as incompetant a way as the ISU. And now the FISG do it in exactly the same way. :bang: :bang: :bang:

Thanks a lot!

I have a feeling Italy is not going to get another Ice Dance spot... Good for P/T, though, that must be a real boost in confidence.

(Funnily enough, Giulia is Noah's former partner from when they were both still young teens (13-14) and skating for the US.)

Also, about the new results service - Do you have to be a member to see the names and detailed protocols? I can only see scores 😅

well this one is certainly a surprise...

Ahead of Nationals, this is the situation for Olympic and European spots should be (apologies in advance for typos and small mistakes)

The ranking is computed by adding top 2 scores of the season + score of National Championships.
Scores from GPs and Challengers (type A competitions) have full value (100%), while scores from other international and national competitions (type B competitions) have a reduced value (95%). However, the best Type B score can have full value for ranking calculation purposes.

Because the internal rule document is not written very clearly, it is not clear (to me) whether Step Sequence scores should be deducted from Senior Singles results, and if the lowest-valued Lift should be excluded from Pairs results. In any case, this should not affect the outcome, as all contenders score similarly on these elements given none of them rely on results from junior competitions.

In the event that the difference in ranking points between two or more athletes competing for the designation is less than or equal to:
  • 30 points in the male category
  • 20 points in the female category
  • 20 points in the pairs category

MEN

Grassl increased its lead. Circelli marginally improved but it is very behind anwyay

1) Grassl 579.4 (if we have to subtract Step Sequences 561.38) * GPF + Elite Championship Series 1st Stage (hereafter Elite 1)
2) Memola 510.91 (492.69) * Lombardia Trophy + Elite 1
3) Rizzo 506.98 (487.51) * Nepela Trophy + Elite 1
4) Frangipani 432.28 (416.43) *NHK + Elite 1
5) Circelli 417.8 (401.89) * Tallin + Golden Spin

Grassl is a shoo-in
2nd Olympic spot Memola and Rizzo.
For Europeans, Italy have 3 spots, and both of them have a consistent lead over Frangipani.
However, the big issue here is Memola's conditions.

WOMEN

Piredda improved thanks to Golden Spin.

1) Gutmann 411.6 (392.58) * Skate America + Elite 2
2) Joos 373.1 (357.2) * Nepela + Elite 1
3) Pezzetta 371.31 (355.2) * Nepela + Elite 1
4) Piredda 355.36 (339.93) * Golden Spin + Elite 1

The race for Olympic spot seems close.
For Euros, there are 3 spots. So both Pezzetta and Joos can go. Piredda is a bit too distant, 15-18 points gap is quite a lot to overcome in one competition. She needs one of the other two to implode.

PAIRS

1) Conti/Macii 438.91 (429.63 when deducing the lowest scoring lift) * GP Final and Lombardia Trophy
2) Ghilardi/Ambrosini 381.34 (368.56) * Nebelhorn Trophy and Lombardia Trophy
3) Beccari/Guarise 341.24 (328.9) * Nebelhorn Trophy and Trialeti Trophy
4) Caldara/Maglio 333.6 (323.44) * Golden Spin + Swiss Ice Open

Beccari/Guarise are too far behind G/A at this point. Still, if they beat them at Nationals by, let's say, 20 points, I could see the technical commission overruling the ranking, since B/G have so behind mainly due to injuries. That said, their physical condition is also uncertain, given that they withdrew from Golden Spin this week.

ICE DANCE

1) Guignard/Fabbri 199.61
2) Manni/Roethlisberger 175.05 177.89 * Edited: they took part in one of the National Series competitions this weekend and scored 179.97, raising their total.
3) Paolino/Tuba 173.4
4) Dozzi/Papetti 160.76

Now let's take in consideration Tali/LaFornara
159.23 at Golden Spin
If I understand currently, points 4-5 of the regulations say

An athlete who, due to duly documented force majeure or in agreement with the Technical Commission, is unable to take part in the minimum number of international competitions on the ISU calendar or competitions on the FISG calendar used to calculate the ranking, may use the total score from the last international competition held during the previous season.

Except for the cases referred to in points 9, 10, and 11, an athlete's total ranking score is calculated by adding up the scores
of only the competitions in which they participated during the season.
[points 9-10-11 talks about other things, not sure why they mention them...probably because they cut and paste from 2024 regulations....]

So T/L can add the 177.5 from Junior Worlds. Anyway, it would mean an average of 168.365.

In the last months we had some new enrollments in armed forced corps for figure skaters (this is the way for Italian athletes to get a monthly salary)

Anna Pezzetta in the Police
Marina Piredda in the Air Force
Irma Caldara in the Air Force
Noemi Tali in the Prison Guards
Andrea Tuba in the Fire Fighters

The situations for others is
Prison Guards: Marco Fabbri, Charlène Guingard, Filippo Ambrosini, Rebecca Ghilardi, Matteo Rizzo, Lucrezia Beccari
Police: Daniel Grassl, Nikolaj Memola, Gabriele Frangipani, Lara Naki Gutmann, Sara Conti, Niccolo Macii, Matteo Guarise

confusing, we're italians after all

The rules are here

If I go by the second link (Allegato 1), article 20 would suggest that it is just the sum of top 2 scores from competitions (with the factoring indicated in articles 4-5.
The Step Sequence and Lift thing are in point 9-10 which is valid for the end of the year ranking and article 20 mentioned only articles 4-5-6.

However, if go by 1st link (where they forgot to edit Paolo Pizzocari's edits at page 4...), article 29 indicates to apply articles 6 to 16 of Allegato 1. So including the subtractions of points 9-10.

The Ice Dance rules are here

To be fair with Italian Fed....they are almost as badly written as ISU regulations.

Today there was a reception at Quirinale with the President of the Republic handing the flag to the Olympic flagbearers.
In attendance: Guignard, Fabbri, Conti, Macii, Ghilardi, Ambrosini, Gutmann, Grassl.

I would guess they are holding on the decision of the 2nd Olympic spot in Man. Rizzo overtook Memola by 2 points in the internal ranking after Nationals. Memola withdrawing from Nationals means his internal ranking computation uses Skate Canada's score instead of that of Nationals.

Caldara/Maglio replaces Beccari/Guarise for Europeans according to ISU entries page.
