So he IS the first NZL skater to win an ISU medal; it's just that last year was that first medal, not this year. Well, good for him!!! Hopefully he'll end up the first NZL skater to win a gold and make to the JGPF. I really like seeing some of these smaller feds get some recognition at last.

I think in case where there is a sole exceptional skater, the credit goes more to the skater rather than the fed. When a fed that previously had nobody starts building up a team of skaters, not medal winning, but of a progressing level to show that the pool is growing, then I would credit the fed for increasing of the sport in the country. Like, Spain disappeared from the FS map as quickly as it appeared, but Estonia is growing the pool. Slovakia is noticeably progressing too this year.

I would also add Kazakhstan, Armenia and Turkey to that list. Yes, there have been some excellent Kazakh skaters in the past, but I feel they were individual examples rather than part of a progressing federation.

To be fair, when Javier Fernandez retired (with his OBM, 2xWC, 7xEuros etc etc, BIG star) he was I believe hoping to start building both a pro career and be the start of a bigger Spanish skating tradition. But then covid hit... I guess we will never know if it could have happened

Kazakhstan is certainly increasing participation and level, their junior selections for JGP was quite strong in singles. It's a pity that Mexica and Spain didn't have the same growth after an individual strong skater success.

Not sure about Armenia yet, though they could have had a senior podium finisher lol, if different choices were made. Judging by the JGP Turkey had a lot of junior men and that what it still looks like. The host here, definetly has enthusiasm and active junior women participation increase. Philippines seemed to be on the cusp, then seemed to stop. India continues to be extremely disappointing given the size of the population.

Tonghe Tian may not have the harder jumps yet, but he has great skating skills, and he is very consistent, which is why I put him in the bronze medal position. My 1 and 2 are correct, my 3 and 4 are flipped, and my 5 is currently in 6.

I thought that top 7 skates were amazing, especially considering how messy the women were in comparison.

Speaking about impressive federations, Israel has consistently had a very high placing singles skater that I was unfamiliar with each week, throwing off my predictions. I find the Sheiko brothers to be amazing, and I hope Nikita makes it to Junior Worlds this year.

Israel is like Germany, they never really dropped off the radar, but Sheiko and Kupermann are both excellent, and I really, really hope one of them opens up more spots for Israel next year for JGP. I am watching women atm, and yup, it's a mess.

Oh, I completely agree. I just mean, it's nice to see a flag other than the usual ones at the top.

There is a lot of it going this season in JGP! And we have tripods regularly. Hope this stage will be the same.

Agreed! Those couple of rebuilding years after last Olympics were rough, but I feel like we're starting to find some depth in each field again. I'm enjoying seeing skaters from countries other than the usual winners shine.
