2025-26 Japanese Women's Figure Skating

It's going to be Kaori and Ami for the Team event.
Is there any official source....? Or is this an opinion? (Not intending to attack you but I haven't been looking at Japanese news in detail so I may miss something official)

My hot take is Ami didn't do exceptionally enough at 4CC to be considered as a clear decision over Mone for the team event. Mone didn't do herself any favors either, but she still has the reputation and WS advantage.

They both lost to ISU Championship debutante Yuna Aoki which is like. It is correct that Yuna is a much better skater than them both, but after the seasons they all had, Mone and Ami dropped the ball. It reminded me of 2018 4CC, where Kaori Sakamoto doubled down her Olympic spot selection by beating Mai Mihara and Satoko Miyahara. This was a place for Ami and Mone to do that, and they lost to a much less decorated teammate... who has never gone to a big championship, juniors and seniors. Girls what are you doing.

I do hope Kaori does the team event though. I just realized that if Kaori wins gold both at the individual and team event, the individual-team gold combo at the first 4 Olympics since the introduction of team event will be equally split between 4 disciplines and 4 countries:

2014 - Pairs & Team Gold - Volosozhar/Trankov (RUS)
2018 - Ice Dance & Team Gold - Virtue/Moir (CAN)
2022 - Men & Team Gold - Nathan Chen (USA)
2026 - Women & Team Gold ......

(sorry if the comment was too straight forward), but by knowing how JSF generally works, I think it would be Kaori and Ami for Team event.

No, it's okay 😄 usually you're up to date with Japanese news, so I was wondering if I had missed any official announcement from JSF.

I think Ami did enough at 4CC to be considered over Mone - the fact that Ami fell on her 3A but managed to land everything else with almost no calls, showed that she won't let 1 mistake derail her. And she still managed to score 141 to boot. Similar thing also happened in GPF.

I reckon it's proof enough that Ami handles pressure & nerves better than Mone, which is what you want for the Olympics 🙂

My dream team for the team event would be :
Mone Chiba for the SP since that this program have the potential to score 77 points like her GPF and his fun to watch.
Kaori Sakamoto for the FS for giving to Kaori a sort of warm-up before the individual event. Much like Alina Zagitova did when she won gold at the Olympic Games. She performed the team long program as a warm-up to win gold in the individual event.

If 4CC was a skate-off for the team event, then Nakai did enough. She beat Chiba by 13 points and it wasn’t the first time she beat her by more than 10 points either. She’s also shown that she can score 210+ without clean 3As. I think she’s already proven that she can handle pressure and competition nerves (and better than Chiba) before 4CC and the field didn’t warrant freaking out on the ice anyway.

The choice should be clear at this point; if it isn’t then there shouldn’t have been a skate-off in the first place. After all, Chiba’s the National medalist, not Nakai. If Chiba actually already has the spot due to her Nationals results and we’re all just tripping, then competing at 4CC was an incredibly poor decision that backfired.

I expect to see Sakamoto and/or Nakai in the team event, though. It was telling that Nakai was the second pick for the Olympic team, not Chiba.

Or maybe Mone saved herself for olympics.
The Japanese women wanted to see score if messed up and compared to others even team.

Being in the team event is a huge opportunity for either Mone or Ami. It guarantees one of them being an Olympic medalist. I agree that Ami won that position. However, her 50/50 ability to land the 3A scares me a bit in the SP though. I prefer her in the free skate. Pretty sure Kaori prefers the free skate portion though…

Also, shout out to the MF Figure Skating Academy. I just realized that if Mone didn’t skate at 4CC, Rinka could have skated here and all three skaters correspond to this very same camp. My respect 🫡 to this coaching staff.

Yuna - lovely musicality. 3Lz 3Lo and 2A eu 3F are unique combos that should be rewarded more
Ami - 3A and you can tell they give her music she likes to skate to
Rinka - 3A. Goes for 3 3A’s at Nationals and is a warrior

I was ready to sound off, but then remembered that this may have to do with Miura’s shoulder injury. If Sakamoto skates both programs then I expect Nagaoka/Moriguchi to skate the pairs FP.

Yes, but Nagaoka/Moriguchi aren't in Milan yet. They are probably coming from Germany, which is close, but Japan has a great shot at gold and Riku said she's at 100% and feeling in her best form yet in the mixed zone yesterday. I think Japan won't split Pairs' unless they have a huge lead heading into the free skate or are super behind Team USA, both of which are very doubtful. They will need every point to win that team gold medal, but it is very possible.

【MILAN, Kyodo】Figure skating at the Milan-Cortina Winter Olympics commences with the team event on the 6th. Japan aims for another podium finish following its silver medal at the previous Beijing Games. With rival nations including the United States and Canada sending their representatives to the venue, the atmosphere is building ahead of the opening.

For Japan, last season's World Champions Riku Miura and Ryuichi Kihara are expected to compete in both the short programme (SP) and free skate for the pairs event, while Kaori Sakamoto will feature in both disciplines for the women's singles. Yuma Kagiyama is likely to skate the SP for the men's singles, with Shun Sato taking the free skate. In ice dancing, the pair of Utana Yoshida and Masaya Morita, who missed out on individual Olympic spots, will compete as team members.

The individual events commence on the 9th.

so they're not splitting pairs????

so they're not splitting pairs????
Looks like they are leaving their options open, just not saying it, and are waiting to see how the points shake up after the SPs...
Which is a solid strategy, they can switch in either the women(who looks better on the practices, probably Ami) or YunaSumi, should their chances of team gold look slim/ or someone needs a breather from competition(knowing the Kaori, RikuRyu, not very likely...)
Unless major upheaval takes place in both singles Short Programs, they have the silver in the bag
