2025-26 Japanese Women's Figure Skating

Looks like they are leaving their options open, just not saying it, and are waiting to see how the points shake up after the SPs...
Which is a solid strategy, they can switch in either the women(who looks better on the practices, probably Ami) or YunaSumi, should their chances of team gold look slim/ or someone needs a breather from competition(knowing the Kaori, RikuRyu, not very likely...)
neither Ami nor Mone or in Milan yet and there's no news of them having left for Milan, so it's safe to say they will not be splitting the women.

Riku said she's at 100% and feeling in her best form yet in the mixed zone yesterday.
Oh, if that’s the case, then I expect to see them skate both programs depending on how the SP goes.
I think Japan won't split Pairs' unless they have a huge lead heading into the free skate or are super behind Team USA, both of which are very doubtful. They will need every point to win that team gold medal, but it is very possible.
Agreed.

US can have a 6-8 point against Japan after the SP - worse case scenario is US winning 3 out of 4 disciplines and Japan placing 3rd in pairs in SP. If it’s the other way around, Japan winning 3 out of 4 disciplines in the SP then it’s going to be very close. The scenario I thought out has a tie.

BREAK

I’m also a little disappointed that Nakai won’t be in the team event. She could’ve even skated the SP since she’s close to breaking 75 even when missing the 3A. BUT it also means that Japan recognizes the chance for gold and is taking the team event very seriously.

(This also means that 4CC wasn’t really a skate-off. If it was known well beforehand that neither Nakai or Chiba will be skating in the team event then there’s a month between 4CC and the individual event at the Olympics.)

I’m sad for Ami 😢
Kaori 227.18 SB
Ami 227.08 SB
Ami’s 3A is 50/50. But, she is consistent with the rest of the triples. I think she a has a slightly smaller chance to beat Alysa or Amber.

My disappointment is in the fact that Japan is most likely only going to win the silver and I would have preferred if they distributed the wealth so Ami could be an Olympic medalist.

I also think that Ami is as deserving as Shun to win a medal. Why does he get the free skate and guaranteed medal and not Ami.

I think this decision was made a while ago though. Hence, why Ami and Mone skated at 4CC and Shun didn’t

Regarding why Shun got the nod and Ami didnt..

For all of even his inconsistencies- he saved Japan's 3 spots for this Olympics, has outscored Yuma in the Free this Season, and didnt have wild swings in his competitions this season. Only men above him right now score wise are Ilia and Yuma (with Jun being a possible spoiler), while the woman's event can be more volatile.

You ain’t lying, but I don’t think Nakai was ever even considered for the team event. The team event participants were decided at Nationals, but that’s only just now becoming apparent. Both Nakai and Chiba were inexplicably assigned to 4CC and that threw a lot of people off, myself included. It seemed as if JFed directed a skate-off between the two to decide who will skate in the team event, but in actuality neither were chosen and so now them going to 4CC makes more sense.

It’s also believed that the team event is given to the Nationals podium. This means that the spot should have been Chiba’s in theory, not Nakai’s. I think this is more a case of Chiba losing the spot and not anything to do with anyone else.

I still say that not choosing Nakai is a bit of an oversight, especially considering Japan’s chances at winning gold over US. Realistically, she’s placing no lower than second in either segment regardless if she hits her 3A or not.

Also….the girl has the second highest SB and broke 220 again at GPF. She’s definitely contending for the podium in the individual event at this point. So is Chiba if she can handle her nerves and perform like she was earlier in the season.

Rinka just made an announcement on her official IG that she will leave MF Academy and relocate to Kurashiki (not sure whom will she train with).
Maybe Yusuke Hayashi? I think he's based in Kurashiki but we will see, maybe some fresh coaching blood. I get her decision, she probably felt she need a change if she wants to continue, Nakaniwa's team have a lot of young talents to focus on in the upcoming quad.

Yes, it’s going to be Hayashi, as posted in the following news report.

Ami Nakai is such a joy to watch. Yes, she's not super refined yet, but the authentic joy and youthful grace is EXPLODING out of her on the ice. She just transfers her internal happiness to the viewer, even the most hardcore knowledgeable fan counting points, focusing on elements' cleanliness has to give up for those 3-4 minutes of her skate and smile like a little kid.

Thank you, Ami for your love to figure skating. 🙏🥰

I think both Ami Nakai and Alysa Liu have in common a lack of nerves going into their programs, nothing to lose, which gives them more confidence and leads to better results and consistency.

Her joie de vivre creates a strong repercussion with the La Strada movie character. Thanks to which, her short program was the first La Strada program ever that gave me a true La Strada vibe. So I guess I'm saying "thank you" with you here.

For other readers of this thread: Did Ami actually watch the La Strada movie? Has she talked about it in interviews? It would be interesting to know if this is thoroughly her personality that creates the vibe or is she impersonating a character (sometimes these are inseparably close but still).

For what I heard her costume actually match la strada very well, it is designed that way in purpose

Experience plays a great role though.
This was Alysa's second OG campaign. She could skate like nothing special. Also, she had more experience of arraigning things during big events (how to train, how to rest, how to handle press etc.) which is very important.

I think Ami suffered a mild burnout because of lack of big event experience but she has shown a great gift of withstanding pressure thorough the season. Taking home a bronze medal from her fist Olympic campaign confirms that. Well done, Ami!👍

Ami's results will drop a bit during the upcoming seasons (Puberty is an Evil Witch, you know). But, if she stays calm about it, she can recover in time to come back strong for 2030 OGs. She definitely has a lucky hand in the Olympic lottery

I guess they want to keep the WC first alternate close, like they did in the past, so Rinka makes sense. But any guesses as to why Mana is going, and not either of Rino and Rion? :(

Mana is scheduled to be placed in the B-level squad for next season based on her 12th place finish in the All-Japan Championships.
Given her young age, it would be premature to abandon her, so she has returned to the international stage.
Moreover, she has recently regained her 3A.

Also, considering the results from recent Aichi Championship - Rino WD-ed there (hopefully not injury related), and Mana placed 2nd (behind Mako). So I'd guess that originally the spot might go to Rino, but for some reason passed on to Mana. And Mako already got the pre-season CS competition spot.

Another interesting point from Aichi Championship: Mako was attempting 3Lz-3Lo in SP and 3A in FS, but neither was perfect. So we're going to see how they keep on the the Ultra-C elements in the upcoming season...
