2025 JGP Varese Women's Free Skate

There is a weird tendency for the skaters today to run out of juice early?!
I wondered whether Varese was at altitude, as the same thing happened with the men, but it isn't. Although the town is in northern Italy near the alps, it is down by the big lakes and is fairly low lying.

If anything, I was wondering if the open windows meant more glare from the ice or more distractions as things moved on the street. Whatever the case, for me it was a dissapointing free skate for women. I kinda gave up on it in the end.

I thought Yihan was robbed of gold so much cleaner than Youn who had incorrect edges on her jumps, underrotations and q's not called.

Annika Chao opening 3Lz a flat edge or wrong edge (not called), 3Lo a q at a minimum if being generous (not called instead 3's from two judges) if not underrotation, 3Lz on sequence a clear underrotation (not called just two q's on the double axels), 3F looked under or on the q (looks like they called it), single 3T a q if being generous(not called) if not an underrotation.

Not to mention the judges overlooked Chao's underrotation on the 3T in the short program as well (not even a q).

Youn opening 3Lz then 3T underrotated (not called), 3F in combo flat edge and a q (not called), 3Lz in sequence flat edge (not called), first 2A in sequence underrotated then second 2A on q (neither called), 3F under close to a downgrade (acutally gave her the underrotation).

Kanazawa 3Lz fall (not given of course she needed to put her hand down to stop completely falling to the ice), 3F-3T the 3T is a clear underroation (not called), 3Lo borderline q they would give it a q if another skater, sequence first 2A on q (not called), 3Lz-2T the 3Lz was a q (not called).

Go back to the SP and Kanazawa 3Lz-3T both landings looked like a q if not under, of course nothing called instead six 2's and two 3's. This is a 13 year old skater with zero reputation as well, but overlooking all errors and giving huge GOE. When I complained about skaters getting lowballed last season, the common refrain was they have to EARN their reputation, despite one of them medalling 2/2 times on the JGP circuit in the past with 200+ scores.

Yihan who had much stronger jumps than any of the above skaters, of course found an underrotation for her. Yihan allowed no errors, other skaters allowed to have 3-5 errors ignored by the judges. This gives a huge advantage/disadvantage, helps/destroys the confidence and nerves of skaters. Some can skate with freedom knowing their errors won't matter, others know that every error which hurts their performance even more, must be incredibly nervous having to walk such a tightrope.

Horrible to see Polina D lowballed with 46 PCS as well. Poor girl was in tears in the kiss and cry. It's like a game to these adults.

Not a criticism of any skater, but the adults judging this.

Yihan needs to learn to emote. That is not something which comes easily to her, but it is needed for her to get high PCS. Chaeyeon Kim had similar issues at the same stage, and it is still a bit of a weakness for her.

Polina had a bad skate and her score was, unfortunately, reflective of that. After her fall, the rest of the programme was empty with regard to choreography and performance. She was just skating from one element to another, and from one error to the next. Hopefully we will see at another event what she really can do with that programme. Her performance did not reflect her ability, and she is sensible and experienced enough to realise that. She knew she hadn't skated well and was already upset when she finished her programme. I doubt that she would have felt any better if the judges had ignored the errors, because she knew it wasn't a good skate. She was upset with herself. Brandenburg had a similar meltdown in her FP. Both are very capable skaters who had a bad day and were marked accordingly.
