Saki MIYAKE JPN skates to Maria di Nazareth. She gamely tries the 3A and trips on the landing. Very lovely skating, a few misses but still quite good. So happy to be second. Kaori still leads and is jumping up and down backstage.

I did not realize that Rinka and Kaori are skating to the same music.

Kaori's skating is as magnificent as it always is, but I think the way the songs are cut together lets her down a bit. A bit haphazard, and not just because she is rushing (as per usual with early season Kaori). Ending it with back to back spins feel a bit pedestrian for her. I like Mako's music cut more (but her choreo is obviously not on Kaori's program level).

Okay, that was actually a good free for Miyake. I just didn’t want her to drop dramatically after the SP. Her spins are a little scary. Her SP lead may hold after that.

Mone CHIBA JPN is last to skate in a gorgeous burgundy flowered dress perfectly suited to Romeo & Juliet - the Leo version. She spins like a top in those jumps. Such lovely flow across the ice. I really enjoy her skating. So glad I am not a Japanese judge - it is like choosing flowers - so many to love.

A lovely skate from Chiba to end the competition. I really like her soft pillowy landings. Spins are gorgeous as usual, especially the layback. Her consistency and confidence have really grown over the years.

apart from the voiceovers and the somewhat empty beginning, I really like this free for Mone, it really shows off her skating skills and clean lines, especially in the step sequence. It's definitely a lot more memorable than her free last year.

Thanks for this - I managed to catch Saki's replay and Mone.

Love Mone's dress, but the program still doesn't work for me. To me it lacks a wow factor and a bit boring especially as an R&J program. Maybe it just needs more mileage before Mone's performance can convince me.

The highlight is Saki getting a medal - and Kaori's expression when she realized they're on the podium together

I love this FS for Mone, the dress, the program, the music, her hair, all of it! They all come together so beautifully with her gentle, ethereal skating!!!! Perfect to go with the upbeat and lively Last Dance SP, also so great for her, showcasing her mastery of ice and diversity, and I hope she keeps it this way.
Yes, she's finally beaten Kaori in SP, FS and overall, and by 10+ points, no less, and without being perfect herself, and on Japanese soil! And, very deservedly today, I must say! Hoping for a great great Olympic season for her !
